I think we would have done better in years gone by if Ryan Giggs had opted to play for England. But as for playing as the UK, I don't think it would improve our chances that much.

I take it you're talking about the lions team?
I think you're right though. Although I wonder how it works for the Olympics.... Perhaps its more that an individual has to qualify on their own merit to be on the team (thinking of gymnastics and athletic here) |

Yes, it just turns into a bitching match depending on the nationality of the head coach. He's either stacking the team with players from his country or not including enough from one of the others. |

Exactly, as much as I'd like Bale to play alongside Kane and have defenders that are actually in the starting line up of their clubs, it would cause more problems than it would solve |

How it works depends on the actual sport. In the UK, we have British Cycling, British Athletics, British Rowing etc. There maybe country specific versions, but they all report to the National body. This National body reports into the World version.
For football it's different. Each country has it's own FA which reports into FIFA. As FIFA want us to merge, they refuse to allow us to enter a UK team at the Olympics - we had to get a special dispensation to do so in 2012. |

"Do you think we should play as the UK in the world cup? Surely we would do better?"
The logical extension of that argument is to enter a EU team instead of individual European countries.
Sport is one of those things where the countries of the UK can express their own distinctive identity, without fighting one another (like we did in centuries past).
It also gives each of those countries a chance to raise their own profile on an international stage.
Why would anyone want to remove 4 chances of getting a place in the finals and replace it with one?

I still think that England should have it's own National Anthem played at football matches, Jerusalem or Land Of Hope & Glory will do. If we were in the same group as another country from Gt. Britain in a Finals Tournament, who in their right mind would want to listen to God Save The Queen twice? |

But they wouldn't would they? Scotland abd Wales gave their own anthems don't they? |

Well that's where it all gets a tad confusing, England teams in different sports have adopted different anthems over the years. I think we should only use GSTQ if it is the UK or Gt.Britain & N.I. who are participating as a whole. |

But, even by ourselves, we're not quite as shit as Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. At least we are there and taking part!
The world cup is about individual countries, the UK isn't a country.
I think we could do better if we could select players from the other countries that make up the UK but, I still prefer it the way it is so wouldn't change it at all. |

An interestingly how would the media report it?
Last night England won a great game and today the press is plastered with headlines.
Wales pushed up to 3rd in rugby world rankings after wins and barely a report?
England cricket team is made up if Wales too? No real mention?
I support being British...we're best like that, but we'd all have to buy in? |

Having a UK football team would surely mean an end to international friendly games against our UK constituents.
How would England v Scotland, England v Wales or England v Northern Ireland work?
I love going to these games when I can. The friendly rivalry, the banter, the atmosphere is great.
I'd love to see England win the world cup, I'm happy if they do well. The world cup is as much about the occasion as anything else. Great football and nice to win but shouldn't be taken too seriously. |

Not really. How many programmes have been rescheduled on the BBC and ITV because of this kerfuffle. There would be uproar if it was golf, fishing or rounders they were showing. Keep sports on designated sports channels. It's not rocket science. |

By the looks there is already uproar
I don't know, you tell me how many. I only watch TV on catch up.
There's catch up (if available), 2, 4, 5. Itv 2, 3, 4.
Then the channels sky offer (if you pay).
While your looking for the above facts (programme reshuffles) can you have a look for what percentage football (and all the other sports) take up on our TV over 365 days. Include 'question of sport' if you wish.
Would be interesting to know. |

We can only guess. I'm going with 5-10% of free TV, is taken up by SPORT through the year.
Now seeing as sport and exercise is so important to youngsters and adults I don't see this as a bad thing.
The BBC have to cater for all tastes in entertainment.
If there was less sport I think there would even bigger complaints.
At least you have the option to pick up the remote and turn off or turn over. |

It's interesting no one has raised the point as to whether there is any justification for one sovereign state having four chances at winning the world Cup.
No other state has more than one chance. |

Possibly, depending on how you define Hong Kong and Macau. They did have a long history of being separate from China whilst the four UK countries have not been separate since 1801, 1707 and 1536. |

The UK isn't a country? Are you sure about that? 1 head of government, 1 head of state, 1 military, 1 seat at the UN, 1 at NATO, 1 at the EU, 1 at the WTO etc. I think you need to brush up on the Montevideo Convention. |

I totally agree that we should play as a UK team - there's an old saying 'divide and conquer' and under the present system, we are the only country in the world that divides ourselves and conquers no one (1966 excepted). All of us cheering for the same team would help to unite the country after Brexit too. Your idea is a good suggestion. |

How's that an oxymoron? It's a de facto independent state in the sense that is has the same exclusive control over a certain territory as any other independent state.
It's not necessarily a de jure independent state as most countries in the world recognize Taiwan as legally part of China and the Beijing government as the legal government of China. |

The Montevideo Convention may codifie the declarative theory of statehood and recognise the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as a sovereign state or country but, that doesn't detract from the fact that the UK is a sovereign state made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which are countries in there own right. The Montevideo Convention wouldn't deny that, the rest of the world wouldn't deny that, especially the populations of those four countries...why would you? |

None at present, but Dalglish, Souness, Hansen, Crerand, Law, Brenner, Best, Whitehouse etc, etc mixed in with the England players would have made a fabulous UK team - and who knows who may come along in the future - it's just daft to restrict choice to only part of the UK instead of from the whole of the UK, just look at the fabulous success in cycling and rowing in the London and Rio Olympics. |

But you have to balance that with the political problems. It would be unacceptable to have a UK team with only english and Welsh players, even though that's the best selection right now. So we'd end up selecting a worse team just to make people happy. |

Not presuming anything. But he is probably the only player who’s selection could be justified in merit.
Bale’s personal history is to follow the glory. So although he is still unlikely to lift a World Cup with England he will get the exposure he craves. Or.. perhaps he just prefers to sit on the beach.
Plenty of English England players have hardly looked like representing England was the most important thing in their careers.
Particularly anyone who played for united under Ferguson |

Your point is well made and in the short term there may well be initial issues.
I don't know anyone who bothers where Olympic team members were born - and in time I think the same would apply to a UK football team, if it was given a chance.
On a practical front though, I don't think a UK football team will ever happen because there are too many people in the SFA, WFA, NIFA who would resist it because most of them would no longer be required in a streamlined UK set up. |
