That's not exactly what he said, he said from an evolutionary perspective men have to pass on that gene of humour to attrack women, we need it to survive. Women don't. There's actually some good peer reviewed science behind it.

On a base level, purely stripped down mating behaviour, I can see where he is coming from. Women don't need to be funny to attract a mate, because as the mating ritual has evolved, for lack of a better description, males have been the ones to bring humour into the "ritual".
Does this mean that women aren't funny? Absolutely not. Humour is subjective anyway. I hate Sarah McMillan, but I used to watch smack the pony every Friday. But there are no where near as many women trying to do comedy as men and that in itself is telling."
If you watch something like Mock the Week, the female comedians have to work a Hell of a lot harder than the guys to get their lines in.
I think it may be just harder for women to be comedians. It isn't that they're not funny, they simply have to do more to stand out.....
I wonder if a throwback to the days of working mens clubs, when the comic turns were pretty much 100% men.

It's a fair point. Comedy is possibly the most subjective art form there is. Personally i don't find anything on BBC remotely funny because they have broadcasting standards that ensure nothing funny would be allowed to air if it was said.
I don't struggle to think of women comedians i do think are funny. But it's the proporitons I'm commenting on. It could be both factors. |
