Was reading an article in yesterdays paper about the guy and the problem with his insurance to go into the jungle. The reporter said that Freddie Starr puffed constantly on a cigarette, this after having a quadruple heart bypass operation a while back.
What a kick in the teeth to anyone waiting for such an operation that would save their lives (or at the very least improve the quality of it) to hear of this arsehole having it done and then making no attempt to change his lifestyle!!! What a waste of NHS money |

That would be a waste of NHS money that HE has paid over the years yes?
It never ceases to amaze me how some people pontificate from the relative safety of their perfect little lives and decide who must die and who must live - a choice made after careful scrutiny of the condemned's lifestyle.
Doctors are just that, not Gods who are empowered with who they will treat and who they won't, and if they feel they do have the right to decide then they should be stripped of that power and unceremoniously kicked out of the NHS.
When I go to an NHS hospital, for whatever reason, I expect to be treated without running the gauntlet of where the blame lies for my condition. |

And yet he continues to entertain thus arguably saving the NHS millions by taking minds off daily ills...
Not being a drinker, I wouldnt understand why George Best drank his way through a liver or two... And I would hesitate to sum up a mans entire brilliant career based on one facet, reported in the press...
Just a thought... |

Not saying he shouldn't have had the operation, the point I am trying to make is with all the cuts nowadays some people die whilst waiting for treatment and how bad it must make them feel, at least if someone gets a second chance try and make the most of it, which he doesn't seem to be doing. |

Surely if your point is 'what with the cuts' etc, you shoud be blaming the Tories and Lib Dems for their ideological cuts.... what (seems) to cost the nhs far more money than smoking is drinking. it also costs police time.
dont drink n drive. smoke dope and fly home |

I'm with Wishy.
Stop attaching moral judgements to things that are NO concern of yours.
Incidentally ( let's not say anyone here - God forbid but .. ) If a female forumite was attacked by a meet should we deny the dirty bitch treatment cos she risked meeting outside of societal 'norms and mores' ?
Yeah .... let her die. There are nice nuns waiting for operations.
It's HER own fault. |

Personally, I see that he has had a second chance here.... he has been the cause of the problem (through smoking) but has had a life saving operation in the form of the heart bypass and IMO rightly so.
If he continues to smoke then so be it, im sure the NHS wont be paying for a second operation if it can be shown his continued smoking was the cause of it.

I was a big Freddie Starr fan and still check some of his clips now and again on u tube, there is an excellent one of him with Shirley Bassey. The last time I saw him on tv was celebrity wifeswap and afraid to say he was a bit of an ass and I'm guessing that's the one people will see on I'm a Celebrity. |

considering every medical condition known to man,if your a smoker,is attributed to your smoking.
i often wonder how it's possible, for non smokers,to suffer these same medical conditions hmmmmmmm.
call me cynical, but i'm thinking, could it be plausible, the medical profession are grossly exaggerating, the actual true figures of smoking related conditions.
so i'm also thinking, the 14 billion pounds, paid in tax,by smokers last year, would pretty much cover any nhs treatments received by smokers.
then you would have to take into account, personnel tax,and national insurance, paid by smokers.
so smokers,pay their way,and a bit more.
please remember,we only pay the tax,we are not responsible on how it's distributed. |

Many years ago my old duffer of a doctor was so anti-smoking that if you went to him with your arm hanging off and you told him you were a smoker the silly old wanker would tell you to stop smoking and you'll grow another arm.
He died a few years ago of heart failure. He shouldn't have been so sodding healthy should he. |

What he does after the surgery is down to him, i believe the NHS can refuse a second surgery if the user hasnt made an effoer to change a direct cause for the first.
Some people forget how much money from the sale of cigarettes is taxed. |

It begs the question Was it NHS or did he go private? If it was private then you can't really be condemning him for wasting NHS money. However it was the NHS it isn't really that responsible even if he has paid hundreds of thousands more in tax than the rest of us. Sadly smoking is an addiction and some just dont have the intelligence, willpower or determination to see how unhealthy it is for them and quit. Not everyone was born with the same determination and conviction. |
