Zebra Crossing, car didn't stop
Jump to: Newest in thread
So you're outside a busy supermarket that you visit often and about the cross the road at a zebra crossing, but a car drives straight over it. You look in the window and see a complete mong who wasn't paying attention and had no idea you were there.
How do you react / what do you do? |

How to react? He/she won't care, they're 200yards up the road by the time you've reacted.
What would you do? There's nothing you can do apart from say to oneself 'what a knobjockey' |

What else can you do? "
Pop home, pick of a chainsaw and wait patiently for them to return to their car after doing their shopping? |

run after them and throw a dolly through their window like a wild fucking conor mcgreggor.
nah I would just walk across after they had gone and do/say nothing. If they hit me I would go after them. |

Had something similar happen to me recently. Not only failed to notice poor little old me about to cross the road but failed to notice the cop car behind. Oh how I laughed when they were pulled over. |

After the initial shock, look on the bright side - he/she missed you.
Mind you, I uttered some obscenities this morning.
Walking up to a crossroads, where quite a lot of parents and children cross to school, I was within 6 inches of being clattered by an adult whizzing round the corner on the pavement on a scooter.
Kids on wheels on the pavement is fine. Adults? I gave him some abuse. |

My hand may have hit their window...
The scooter thing is terrible, when they or cyclists get too close i want to kick their wheel out |

Definitely, there should be a lot more measures to encourage cycling and make it safer |

It does concern me though as I'm a fully grown adult, albeit not the tallest, and it's a place where parents bring kids. So if they can't notice me then they won't see a kid either... |

Lights were on red so a bus had stopped. Kid crossing. Lorry thought the bus was stopped to pick up passengers and overtook him. Killed the kid. |

It doesn't matter if I'm at a zebra crossing or a red light, i dont walk over unless the car is coming to a stop, or has stopped completely.
A lot of drivers dont pay attention so I'm not surprised when they drive straight past without even noticing me |

If he/she is coming in to park, get their reg. And ask security to have a word.
Not sure if the cops would b interested but you could ask the security to pass onto police if recorded and can make out reg number, Esp a near miss like that |

Shout stamp your foot get angry and increase your blood pressure?
Accept that others are fallible too....even drivers...shrug your shoulders and get on with life?
The choices are your OP. Which one causes the least stress or bad feeling in your life? |

To be honest, punching their car window made me feel pretty good |

I was using a zebra crossing with our daughter when she was about 8. She was walking ahead of me but we were both on the crossing. Something made me reach out and pull her back. I'm glad I did because a car drove at speed over the crossing where she would have been standing.
in that case I would not have been responsible for my actions had she hit our daughter.
If they drive over while I'm standing waiting to cross I just swear ineffectively. |

Nothing.
Read the Highway Code. You should stop at a zebra crossing but you don't have to by law.
As a pedestrian it is your duty to stand by the side of the road and wait for the traffic to stop! |

What a car not stopping at a zebra crossing, well I never.
Get the reg and report it to the police, get a picture of the vehicle if you can. |

you may have the right of way, but it's a no contest against a 2 tonne piece of metal!
You only have the right of way if you are already on the crossing "
Even when on the crossing you should keep your wits about you - look at any approaching cars and decide if they are slowing down or not!

Roll my eyes and carry on with my day.
You need to be aware and be responsible for yourself when using zebra crossings as we all know cars dont always stop. |

Unfortunately the vast vast majority of accidents occur from drivers just driving in a daze, we call them accidents and give them a slap on the wrist to carry on driving in the life long oblivion they've become institutionalised in |

You could buy a car identical to theirs, copy their number plate and speed back n forth through a speed camera 4 times, so they get enough points to be banned for a year |

Technically if you haven’t a foot on the crossing you don’t have to stop, we live in a town famous for a sit com, we get a lot of visitors, which a lot stand and admire things while stood on the edge of a zebra crossings.
However if they ran over you and you wasn’t on the crossing, that is another story. |

I was run over when i was 18.
Completely my fault except if the fella hadn’t have been charting to his wife he would have noticed me and breaked in time.
The worst thing (as luckily it wasn’t a life threanting injury) was the bloody bottleneckers having a good gawp!!

Had this very argument with a pedestrian not last month, he was walking towards the zebra to my left going in the same direction, made no indication (glance etc) he was going to cross & just stepped straight onto the crossing. I stopped but gave him the shaky fist.He came over.
"You have to stop its the law"
"It isn't, but let's just say it is, what happens if I don't?"
"You'd get done obviously"
"That's ok, I'll tell my kids no toys for a while cos of the fine I'll get, but where would I send the flowers? There's only going to be one loser & its never going to be a car driver fella".

I stand at the crossing and wait until I make eye contact with the driver of the stopping vehicle. I'm too little to bounce off a car, I'd break rather too easily to do anything else. |

Although the difference here is that you actually saw him in the first place. In a supermarket carpark, the cars are going somewhere between 5-15 mph so i fancy my chances to get out the way, I'm more concerned about the frequency i see this happen and what'll happen when it's a child crossing rather than myself. |

Same as I'd react anytime crossing the road, zebra crossing or not.....not even think about crossing till, traffic stopped or road clear of traffic, quite simple |

Zebra crossings. Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.
Taken from the highway code.. pedestrians rule 19..
There are lots of folk doing stupid things on the roads , drivers cyclists pedestrians
everyone should and needs to be aware of their surroundings .. better safe than sorry. |

I take their Reg No and report it to the Police. A lot of crossings have CCTV on them or close by so Police can review events.
Feedback on two occasions advised me drivers were traced and "advised" about their driving standards! |

Yup, you have to make eye contact in my book, I would never take it as read if I were crossing, I often see pedestrians hurling themselves onto zebra crossings without checking if the driver has even seen them or not, and it's foolish IMO. |
