I put £10 on Iceland to win their group.
Daft, did I hear you say?
It's more likely to happen than England winning the final, according to the bookies.

I'm actually more optimistic than usual. I'm in Spain so I'm a bit remote from the UK but there doesn't seem to be the usual hype that happens before a major tournament.
Pretty sure we'll easily get out of the group then anything can happen |

Poland will top their group, Belgium will top England's, setting up Poland v England. Poland have got good players and are vastly more experienced than this England team...

I seem to remember that some mathematician worked out that if they didn't play any friendlies they would somehow get a high FIFA ranking and so would be seeded, so that's what they did. No idea what they're like apart from Lewandowski who is shit hot. |

From ESPN :
FIFA has announced that its World Ranking system has been overhauled to prevent manipulation by nations to move up the table and earn key seedings at tournaments and qualification groups.
The present system uses an average score based over a five-year period. However, as friendlies are worth significantly fewer points than competitive games simply playing them is guaranteed to drag down a nation's average score.
Some countries have actively avoided playing friendlies to protect their average score, while other teams -- such as England, Italy and Spain -- consistently play more friendlies and see their score fall.
It still relies on the nations that benefit having strong competitive records, but because of it Switzerland were seeded at the last World Cup finals, Wales seeded for European World Cup qualifying, and Poland seeded for the 2018 group-stage draw.

So now we are in final group games how do you decide which one to watch... do you:
Choose the team or teams you wanna see play most
Look at points and work out which would be more exciting due to calculations of scores or points
|
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
This week its: points/outcomes etc.
I will watch Nigeria v Argentina later for this reason.
France v Denmark is on, nothing riding on it and by all accounts a shit match.
Next week I will watch just about all of them. I love tournament football |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
Well they need to find a way to stop the last games in the group ending up like this one . Neither team gives a fuck and it’s just tedious .
Maybe have another team in every group , or even two more in each group .
The crowd are booing and whistling and it reminds me of the disgrace of Gijon in 1982 when Austria and West Germany played out a 1-0 to ensure both teams qualified .
Boring and meaningless games like this are a disgrace , and we will have one like it against Belgium on Thursday . Such a shame . |

I watch the one that's on ITV HD, the other game on ITV 7 or whatever it is can just do one
The BBC games I can get both in HD, so it can be a bit of a dilemma.... |

How funny
What a pity the Argies scraped through. However, at least we get to see Messi and for the best part, excellent fans in party mode |

If your English it gives you a better chance of winning. Plus theirs bad footballing history on England's part. I don't think Germany batter too much of an eye lid at England |

because for how crappy a german team has been, they would have been a potential quarter final opponent..... |

None of the following to worry about (at this stage).
Holland
Italy
Germany
Brazil - could join that trio but I doubt it.
Argentina - been awful for most of their games.
Spain - been iffy in both games.
It's a great opportunity for one of the more optimistic lesser nations this year (so far) |

I honestly think there is a mental cloud hanging over England when Germany and Argentina. They must get a huge boost knowing they have don't have to worry about playing them.
To me, Germany have beaten England before the game even kicks off. Of course I'm wrong but it's a hard thing for England to shake off.
Or maybe it's just the pundits and fans and the players know/think better |

Save for Croatia there's not been a stand out team so far, other than the South Korean's today |

It's good that any team that's given too high a credence without proof in current play form, with Germany they often pull it out at the end but it can't always be relied upon.

The rivalry with the added twist that a cocky twat at work has been Gobbing off at work ever since he pulled Germany out of our big money sweepstake.
Oh how I laughed today when I had the pleasure of seeing him nearly in tears as we all took the piss while watching him feed his name into the shredder

Reason why I was happy Germany went out was
It’s been interesting see big football countries struggling in the competition such as Germany, Argentina and Brazil
It would potentially been a team we face on way to the final
And
Obviously the history between German and English football since 66 |

right.... if you are england.... and you know your route to the semi-final could be japan/senegal... followed by the winner of sweden/switzerland..... but you have to come 2nd in the group...... what do you do?
i am thinking it the yellow card count is equal send on danny welbeck and get him to deliberately handball the ball in their half to get a yellow........ |

I know Gareth had been saying the right things. "We play to win" etc, etc, but you've gotta think the possibility of an 'simpler' rite to the semi's has crossed the mind of the squad members. |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
Martinez has already pretty much said he's putting out a second string.
England should do too. Give some of the squad players game time and see what happens.
Coming second in the group will definitely be a benefit long term with a potential quarter final with Switzerland or Sweden but Brazil haven't been impressive and Mexico weren't great today so there is an argument for keeping the momentum going with a strong line up.
Personally, I'd change the entire team. What would you do?

Couple of changes. Keep the foot on the gas. Winning is a good habit in any tournament situation. |

I would make maybe 3 or 4 changes,I feel that keeping the momentum going is far more important. |

Because there are times when schadenfreude is fine..
Germany going out in the group stages is one of those occasions.. |

Keep the momentum. The o my changes I would make would be dropping those who have knocks and those that are on bookings |

Didn't see Brazil playing for a draw and second place to get the 'easier' route and avoiding Uru/Por/Fra/Arg. Top the group in style and let the other teams worry about you instead of worrying about them |

That is because it wasn’t in their hands... if Switzerland had walloped Costa Rica they would have topped the group but the Swiss went all Swiss |

England lost their last game in there group but it makes it much easier to get to the final where they got to go throw Colombia first then ever Sweden or Switzerland to get to the semi final were they could fact whoever it would be hopefully not Russia or Spain |
