How do we stop it? "
Thats a good question. My answer would be this, if you get caught with a knife without good reason then you get 5 years. If you use or threaten to use a knife then its 10 years. Plus education, people need to understand that there is no need to carry a knife or similar things. |

How do we fund all these extra prison places? Their service is overstretched as it is. Benchmarking and funding cuts have put it on its arse. Assaults are on the increase. |

A minimum jail term of 5 years for simple possession of a knife in public will drastically reduce it. The fact Teresa May made it damn near impossible for the police to stop and search people hasn’t helped. Thepolice were told by government thatthey can only search when there is clear evidence that they will find what they are looking for and they are as certain as can be that they are going to find it. In short, they were told to stop searching people. So people can carry knives with impunity. |

Its crazy. Did you see the road rage incident the other day where a car pulled out into the road near missing a cyclist. The cyclist was off his bike in seconds and whipped a foot long machete out of his trousers and was smashing on the drivers window. The driver ended up running for his life. It was shocking... all caught on anothermotorists dashcam.
You just dont know any more... |

We pay for it through the tax system. |

Maybe by legalising certain drugs like cannibis that eould free up a lot of jail space for more serious crimes. |

People won't want to pay higher taxes though.
I'm not saying your idea is bad but there will be hurdles. |

You are quite right, higher tax is never popular but when needs must then we have to act. Lock some of them up and hopefully the message might just get through. |

The goverment don't care. If it was mainly white middle class kids getting killed they would have the army out on the street. OK, a bit of an exageration but you get my point. |

Its not race as the boy that died is white plus the boys that done it are a mix of races... But you are right the goverment dont care... Ive seen this all first hand... One kid dead 5 in prison thats a fair fee kids of the the stree. .. Most of these kids have been failed frim the start... Thr kids that are easily groomed from young being in care homes or just being neglectedat home... But there is also alot of these kids that are from good homes that have been allowed to treat ppl how they eant and have what they want so they grow up with no empathy or care for the world... Theres so much going on and not enough ppl to help treat the problem... But it does start at home |

"There's not enough police on the streets snd sadly that news has got through to everyone from dangerous drivers to petty crims and beyond."
It’s not just about police numbers although that doesn’t help. The main issue is that when the police hating Teresa May was home sec she pretty much removed the stop and search power. You need a gold plated letter from god to stop and search somebody nowadays whereas in the old days you could pretty much turn everybody’s pockets out. This is the main reason so many are carrying knives because they know they won’t be searched. |

Worth remembering that it's always been bad, especially in my neck of the woods (Hackney). The spikes in media attention come and go....
For me, Akala has many answers. It costs more money to have young offenders in prison that doesn't work for many. He suggests investing money into kids much younger. Better support, role models, youth centers etc
There are kids on my estates who come home from school, have tea and are kicked out onto the street by their parents until bed time. Gangs see them as easy and disposable prey. Pretty fucked up |

Agree. Also, it's a catch 22 situation where those who carry knives so easily can cause those who normally wouldn't carry to arm themselves "in defence". |

The torys always called them selfs the party of law and order.
This has never been the case!
It seems every time they get into power there are riots on the streets, now the problem of under funding of the police, stop and search laws etc.
But if a large organization went on strike (lets say the drivers who transport petrol to fore courts etc) went on strike, you can bet they would bring police in from every were to sort it out.
They sit in there offices in Parliament all safe and snug. before their drivers take them safely back home to phone there kids who are tucked up in boarding school away from the gangs and life on the streets.
They lead different lives..who cares about the masses they are doing just dandy!!
Lets be honest..if you vote tory you have contributed to this problem.
You know there record...party of law and order..yeah right..they never were!! |

spot on. This isn't about detecting the issue on the streets and stop and search. This is a social problem, requiring education, change in attitudes, investment by people and the community.
Detection alone won't solve this. Expectations, role models, attitudes and value in people will.
Ps poster...you were blocked because I know you, not because of what you post. |

Sorry but it's here to stay.
Modern britons dont want to pay for the prison places and would rather a few people get stabbed to death every year.
There wont be any money freed up for any of this sort of thing for a good while. A growing part of the population also dont see anything wrong with being rude, throwing acid, or stabbing people. |

Every government, and let's face it, it's only ever alternated between two parties, has sought to reduce police spending. When they are in opposition they spout about lack of police funding and what they will do, then when they get in it's just more cuts in real terms. Lying, hypocritical arseholes, all of them. The other side of it is that the police are not the solution, they are the consequence. If we produce kids, and hence a society, that thinks it's ok to carry weapons and use them on each other then it will never stop. The police just clean up our mess, and the judicial system is our pitiful response that we are doing something about it. How about stopping it in the first place? Raise your kids right. |

Since Sadiq Khan the London Mayor took over, the crime levels have shot up and make a very violent and dangerous city to live in. These thugs doesn't know the meaning of life and are animals that you cannot change them, a doom future and it's impossible to address this problem as our laws is soft and weak!

I think there's definitely a valid point in there though about the Police no longer existing to protect the people, and being driven toward protecting property and interests.
The story I always found heartbreaking was the mother and disabled daughter that were terrorised for years by the kids on their estate until ultimately they killed themselves - countless reports had been filed and yet nothing ever got done. If ever there was a time for some old-fashioned policing where the old bill took the kids down a dark alleyway where they mysteriously fell down some stairs and broke their legs - that was it. But they were deemed 'untouchable'.
Yet take some vegan, sandal-wearing, Green-party-voting, middle-aged hippie woman with the temerity to exercise her democratic right to protest about something like fracking and they've got no problem cracking her over the head with a baton and leaving her bleeding in the street.
The problem with the police (and I say this in a broad sweeping generalisation about the institution kind of way, not as a dig against individuals) is they've been bought off - just like the NHS, just like the politicians...
We have people running the country who are keen to see private companies like G4S and Servo operating our police forces, our courts, our prisons and probation services...
It doesn't seem to have occurred to them that when your profit margin relies on greater numbers of prisoners, the incentive to rehabilitate kind of falls by the wayside...
Truly we live in a kakistocracy |

Perhaps if the police were allowed to rough the bastards up a little when caught carrying a knife it might earn the police a little respect..
Police brutality I hear you cry.. yes it is but the types that carry weapons feel total impunity and definitely have no respect for the law.
There are plenty of other countries in Europe where the police can use "justified force" dealing with criminals without worry about some little scrote claiming against the force because he got a slap for being mouthy.
A fear of the consequences instilled from an early age is the only way to deal with crime in this day and age of limited resource. |
