"On my passport it says I’m British.
I’m not, I think I’m English. "
Ha, that's because England (nor Scotland, Wales and NI) exists as a nation state.
The passport is issued by the nation state - the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
(The longest state name at the UN btw).
So whenever I need to fill out a form abroad or wherever, I enter UK.
For official purposes, I am a UK national.
For conversational purposes, I am Scottish.

British - I live in the country of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland. I was born in Wales, a part of that country. I live in Hampshire, another part. England, Scotland, NI and Wales are regions in the same, but slightly larger way as counties.
My passport is British, so am I. |

As a child we were told to put English on anything we had to fill in. I can't remember when it changed to British but I don't feel English, British or European.

Excuse me while I find my pedantic hat.
Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland are more than just ‘regions’. They are countries in their own right. The fact that they are also part of a larger nation state is why questions like this often come up. The question is not what it says on your passport, because that’s largely the same for most of us. The question is how you feel. |

For Football, Rugby, Cricket & Commonwealth games they are ‘countries’, but for the UN, EC, Olympic games they are regions. I feel British. |

I was born and bred in Northern Ireland. I am a British citizen. I am also an Irish citizen. I hold both a British and Irish passport. Dual citizenship. However I, like others in Northern Ireland, am in a unique situation. I'm sure that doesn't need to be spelt out. So the above are the political technicalities. Now, feeling wise...it's a strange one. I would stand up for Queen and country and love the Royal family. Then, being a mad rugby fan, i'm Irish to the core. Work that shit out! |

"I am English and proud, but more proud of being a Yorkshire man
Just curious why the pride ? "
I often wonder about the "proud" bit.
How would I be proud of being English? It's just luck (good or bad?) of the genetic draw.
It's not something I did, and I've certainly not done much since to improve or change England. |

A little more complicated with me as I was born in England but raised in the Caribbean.
Your childhood memories define you in terms of identity so I'd say I'm West Indian first but secondly, having spent more time now here, I'm also English. |

"I am English and proud, but more proud of being a Yorkshire man
Just curious why the pride ? " for all it's faults, we are fortunate enough to live in country where freedom of speech and expression are not fround upon, where opportunity is abound, if you are prepared to act on it.
Where inovation is encouraged.
Just some of the things that make me proud to be English.
Proud to be a Yorkshire man, we call a spade a shovel and we gave the rest of you Yorkshire pudding, |

We always put 'Other' on those lovely politically correct forms...Just wonder if those statisticians actually read them ..
But usually English and proud of it.
Unless it is to do with our National Team and then class ourselves as Hiding. |

When asked on hotel forms I always put British.
Would be great to be able to celebrate St George's day (Yes I know he's fireign) without being called xenophobic.
Why aren't the Irish, Welsh and Scottish put to the same level of criticism. |

All you seem to hear when people want to celebrate St George's day, is complaints of xenophobia and bans on flying flags.
I've been in Dublin for St Patrick's day and the only complaint I heard was about the price of Guinness |

"English and proud
Wary of flying the flag though as wankers like the edl give it bad press.
It will be out for the world cup "
It's a shame you feel wary of flying your flag. *Shakes head sadly*
That flag needs to be claimed back from the likes of EDL. It really does.

Errr no, Ireland is not part of the United Kingdon. Different passport and they even have the Euro ffs. If you are referring to Rory McIlroy. He is British and Northen Irish.
You go into a pub in Dublin and try calling them British or certain pubs in Belfast and calling them Irish, it would be interesting |
