That Valerie Jarrett was black

And claims a sleeping pill made her say something racist. Of course in 2013 she wasn't taking ambien and still called a black, female politician "a man with big swinging ape balls".

Yes that was hillarious. Joe Rogan spoke to her and then thought about whether it was plausible. He said he had a friend who ambien and managed to wake up at night and cook a meal without remembering it. Then the person he was talking to asked "so was it a racist meal?"

Anyone seen the photo of Nicola Sturgeon likened to the same planet of the Apes character.

No. Not many have either because no fuss was made over it.

Only “non racist” people liken black people with monkeys. Most “racist” thought Valarie jarett just looked like the character. . Nothing to do with monkies.

Same with the young kid wearing the jungle top.

Please leave shouts of racism to real racist.

My mother - who has had repeated outbursts of racist comments over the years - described to me when I was a teenager what Wolverhampton was like, when the first black people came over. She actually said white people thought they were monkeys. I construed that as racist then and I still do now.

I think the ape tweet was the only one that most media felt able to report.

There was a screed of other horrible things, too.

Stuf about Jews and the like.

Oh, and support for someone called Tommy Robinson.

To use the Muslim brotherhood and planet of the apes took some thinking so she was being derogatory to at least one group and probably to more than one...

I think it quite interesting that the people defending roseanne are quoting freedom of speech.. and yet these are the same people who were offended by black nfl players taking a knee

She is a right wing conspiracy nut job.. she was on a short leash... and she hung herself

To be fair, I don't see the link.

I called a white colleague "a fucking badly trained chimp" the other day, due to his inability to do even the most simple of tasks, not because of what he looks like. If he was something other than white, would I now be a racist?

Just another example of people taking things too far and having to tread on eggshells so as not to offend.

People need to see past race, but it has to work both ways.

Tommy Robinson is actually a more complicated character. I think he has some good intentions, he does disown EDF and work with muslims on a daily basis. The main problem is that he's just not very bright. So for every good point he makes, he drops 2 clangers / racist clangers.

Nope you’re reading it right.

She is being called a racist because she likened a black women to a character on planet of the apes.

Nicola sturgeon has been lickened to the same person.

Donald Trump because of his air was likened to an orangotang

If FOX do pick it up and Roseanne is in the cast.... they are going to find one hell of a backlash , I don’t think any advertisers would put commercials in because it would be like a 3rd rail...

Whether it could be salvaged without any Roseanne involvement would be an interesting question...

New name suggestions;

Roseanne sans Roseanne

Roseanne exited stage left

Roseanne expired

The drugs do cause confusion though. She should sue them.

I don't care what she said. I don't care that a shop sells a t-shirt with the word monkey on it. I don't care that when I lived in UK i was called paddy. I don't care that daytime british tv still refers to Irish as paddys.

It's just the way the world is. I believe in freedom of speech, and people can say what they want, when that transfers to an action that holds someone back because of their race, then act, until then grow a pair of balls about it.

But Paddy is not that offensive, it's basically short for Patrick. So similar to Jock for a Scotsman. If a well known Irish company is comfortable to use the word in it's name, I can't see the comparison.

Regarding free speech, no one is denying her right to free speech. But free speech comes with consequences. It should be used wisely, and not to insult or slur.

Free speech is the principle that an individual can articulate their ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship or sanction. So you saying it has "consequences" suggests that you don't really believe in the principle. Personally i don't think what she said is covered by free speech so i am denying her right to make that comment.

My friend is a highly respected comic writer. She is a noted liberal feminist and she made a fair comment about Roseanne Barr and Barr actually threatened to sue her.

I think the ape tweet was the only one that most media felt able to report.

There was a screed of other horrible things, too.

Stuf about Jews and the like.

Oh, and support for someone called Tommy Robinson.

She's really just copying Trump.

The difference is she got the sack, he got elected.

I saw a great tweet today by Brian Christopher:

"In Roseanne’s defense, it’s hard to know the difference between racism that gets you fired versus racism that gets you elected President of the United States."

I don't care what she said. I don't care that a shop sells a t-shirt with the word monkey on it. I don't care that when I lived in UK i was called paddy. I don't care that daytime british tv still refers to Irish as paddys.

But Paddy is not that offensive, it's basically short for Patrick. So similar to Jock for a Scotsman. If a well known Irish company is comfortable to use the word in it's name, I can't see the comparison.

I am not offended when I am called Jock, but I do find it a bit annoying. I find it to be condescending, if I'm honest.

Also, just because a large company is comfortable with a word, doesn't really mean it is ok - Washington Redskins being the perfect example.

The redskins arguement is nonsense in my opinion. It's clearly intended as a compliment. Nobody names their team with a negative term. That's why you never see the Carolina Cowards or the Washington Wimps. I hope the Redskins never change their name.

FOX will be selling their assets to either Disney or Comcast soon. I don't know whether that just means film franchises or if it includes TV shows, either way I don't know how it would work if Fox does pick it up because it could just get cancelled again by the new owner.

The well known company you talk about is called that because it's the name of the man who owns it. Not all us Irish are called Patrick/Paddy so why should we as a nation be collectively referred to as "Paddies"

If you called all Black men "Winston's" or all Indian men "Abdul's" would you still think it's not that offensive?

Apparently that poll was, at best, "a bit dodgy", as those asked weren't actually verified as being Native American. As mentioned previously, I like the name too, but part of me thinks it appalling. My reasoning is this:- If African American slaves had been referred to as "blackskins", would there now be a team called "Washington Blackskins"? I don't think there would be. Native Americans make up only 2% of the US population, so their vote doesn't really win elections etc. This probably means that nothing is going to change for them anytime soon.

Also, if a poll was taken in the sixties as to whether or not "jungle bunny" etc was offensive, we would probably have seen similar results to the "Redskins" one.

You wouldn't get an NFL team named after slaves, because slave isn't a positive term. The teams name themselves after something they see as having positive qualities, this is just unanimous if you look at all the names. Therefore, your blackskins arguement doesn't follow.

Maybe the poll was dodgy but it's just not a clear cut issue where the vast majority of reasonable people agree. It's a linguistic debate at best.

In what way is Redskins a positive term? Redskins is what Native Americans were called as they were being displaced from their land, not to mention the atrocities committed against them. It is not a name they chose themselves.

The Redskins were named back in the 1930's - there were lot's of things going on back then, that are unacceptable now. I believe that name is one of them. If the Washington Redskins did not exist, and a new NFL franchise was created, there is no way that they would be allowed to call themselves "Redskins".

I do agree you wouldn't name it that today but i thoroughly reject PC culture and think that's what's behind the attempts to force the name change. I also don't think one can establish it was ever "their land", in all probability they probably wiped another race off that land just like europeans did Neanderthals, so how far back does one take that principle?

No. I cannot name any other NFL team that has picked a negative name - Only the Redskins. Most of the other teams are called after animals or birds. Some are named after groups of people - Vikings, 49ers, Buccaneers etc. Those names are not derogatory. The closest you will get to Redskins is the Atlanta Braves in baseball. "Braves" is neither derogatory, nor racist. "Redskins" is.

It is possible that the native Americans wiped out another race, but unlikely. That isn't the point though. The point is that the "winners", shouldn't have major sports franchises named after the racist name they gave to the people they wiped out. If you agree that you wouldn't name a team "Redskins" today, then why is it acceptable to allow the name "Redskins" to still exist?

Also, being negative isn't the same as being racist. Gollywogs are not really negative. They are deemed to be racist though. So regardless of where or not you see the name "Redskins" as positive/negative, is irrelevant. It's still racist. I think the name sounds great, but as mentioned earlier - it doesn't make it alright.

To answer your middle point, you wouldn't get away with it today for the same reason you can call a white person a monkey, but not a black person - the historical context. Well that has the work both ways, unless were supposed to pretend that the redskins are the only team in the NFL, NHL or NBA to deliberately insult themselves then the 80-something years of positive context has to count for something. Are you also aware that they were not founded as the redskins but changed their name to it in a season where their new head coach was part sioux? Do you suppose he was offended by the name and that's why he took the job.

They didn't, when naming themselves the "Redskins", think it offensive. It wasn't deemed racist or insulting back in the 1930's. It is now. I also wouldn't imagine their new head coach in 1933, thought he had much of a voice back then. Minorities didn't. Women didn't have a voice either, but that has also changed. My point is that society has changed for the better, and having a major sports franchise, named after a derogatory, racist term for a minority, doesn't belong in it. Just my opinion.

In linguistics it would be called a reclaimed epithet. Can you name any other NFL team that picked a negative term as their name?

My opinion is that it's manufactured offence from people whose opinions the average american should not be concerned with because they don't fit the core values of what it is to be an american.

"I never knew sleeping tablets make you racist/stupid "

I've been thinking about this. Sleeping tablets/ anti depressants etc can make your mind fuzzy like when d*unk. When people are d*unk they say all kinds of shite because their 'brain to mouth filter' is broken.

However she has always been 'outspoken' so I don't think it's a good defence in her case.

Because he was guilty. Ignoring paedophile grooming gangs isn't a crime that anyone has been jailed for yet, although we know lot's of well paid people did it. But making comments on a trial about it is.

And for good reason.

Have you not seen the funding page set up to fight Tommys case?

He presumably trousered that lot and still got to be the martyr that he obviously set out to be.

Perhaps he will use his time in prison to write a book? I suggest a working title of "My Struggle"....

"To be fair, I don't see the link.

I called a white colleague "a fucking badly trained chimp" the other day, due to his inability to do even the most simple of tasks, not because of what he looks like. If he was something other than white, would I now be a racist?

People need to see past race, but it has to work both ways. "

Doesn't mean you are racist but can be perceive as. To be honest i like a bit of race banter.

History has a lot to answer for.

If I called you white (negative term) the history isn't there to open the wound.

open the dictionary especially the old dusty once and look at everything named black usually followed by a negative connotation and everything white usually positive that is how you know racism is indoctrinated in the language, but that is another topic for another day.

Legally the decision is a no-brainer. Can you see why people get annoyed that none of the people who turned a blind eye to the r**e of children have been jailed? Can you understand why people are angry that people like Tommy needed to campaign in order to get the local government to do it's damn job and protect children?

He's an opportunist, all the accused in both trials were already in the justice system, he's not a paedo "Cook report".

I notice he didn't turn up at the trial of the EDL member convicted of grooming.....

Being a bit of a cynic, I suspect the new series was crap, but they had done lots of advance publicity and paid retainers to a bunch of the old cast to sign up for it.

Then they needed an escape route...

It's a sad world when idiots on Twitter are the days news

He didn't expose that either.

If he was going around exposing grooming gangs, I'd give him some credit, but he isn't.

The worst thing about him is that he has so much contempt for the victims of the gangs that he is willing to jeapordise the trials of those accused to make his point.

He never comments on white grooming gangs does He?

He is very silent about EDL grooming. He does make sexual comments about underage Asian girls on Twitter though...

All this "he jeopardised the trial by naming the accused" is patently nonsense.

Their names were on the court listing's.

Their names were on the BBC website.

Their names were already in the public domain.

He pleaded guilty to the charges against him because he was guilty, it's a no brained.

Notice that he wasn't charged with publicly naming the accused.... Why do you think that might have been?

He also dont go to white grooming trials because they ain’t secret unlike trials of certain communities up and down the country.

During the trials of Rolf Harris and the like the press were openly encouraged to turn up.

Bit of a trend happening here don’t you think.

Also with trials of white non ces. You won’t see anyone apologising for them.
