Some people are racist without even knowing it. Already this morning somebody couldnt connect her tweet about comparing that black lady to an ape to being racist.

Possably both.

what she said is indefencable . She should realise her opinions can sway the views of her fan base. In what is a very devided America it was an awful thing to say .

heard some really interesting stuff about 'unconscious bias' in the media this week, connected to Starbucks closing all their sites in the USA to do equality training after 2 black guys arrested for fuck all in one of their coffee shops.

Made me reflect on what my unconscious biases are... a phrase I'd probably heard before but not really taken much notice of.

Roseanne has not been a bit funny for years.

Didn't realise she was still around til this.

I doubt I'm the only one not the least bit surprised she felt confident to voice her opinions. I have noticed over the last couple of years an increase in racist language and casual racism I've not experienced since my childhood in the 60s.

Before people think I have a chip on my shoulder my partner is white, one of my son-in=laws is white and I have three mixed race grandchldren. No axe to grind here.

.

Soicail media just highlights how the majority of people around the world have some kind of racist or stereotypical views about other people, It doesn’t matter what race/colour they are, I think will all do it even when we don’t realise we are, Some are point blank racist some think they are being funny and some people think they are stating facts,

Sometimes I think it’s for the better that they do post their views as you get to see their true personality

There is a long history of white people comparing black people to apes or monkeys. It's a way to dehumanise them and perpetuate stereotypes. It's racist.

Having read a fair few of your posts on numerous threads I can only come to the conclusion you're a WUM. Not for one minute do I think you're a 63yo woman for a second, you come across as a teenage boy/immature man in most of your posts.

Oh and even someone seriously lacking in the IQ dept would lack the awareness that that tweet isn't racist.

Let's leave it there. You seem unable to put a point of view. You point fingers but say nothing and that is one thing that worries me in anything like this; when those without ideas just join the baying crowd.

I didn't like what she said but equally I don't like those that shout hurt just to be in the popular bunch.

Racism comes in many forms. some are in your face and others more subtle, all of which are wrong. Calling anyone an ape when the basis is skin colour is abhorrent. Of course we have to acknowledge that humans are apes. I would draw your attention to another form of television racism which is based on selective discrimination, take a look at Fresh Prince or Cosby show, both of which are heavily black orientated. I would argue that until we get past colour and accept that skin is nothing more than just skin then we aren't ever going to get anywhere. We all bleed red and we should never forget that.

Newcastle and Gateshead

for context as to why this is such big news, ABC basically rebooted her show "roseanne" after 20 years, and it proved to be way more popular than anyone believed it would be (its the no.2 rated comedy show in the us after "the big bang theory")

they were about to start writing and filming season 2 which was due to go out in the autumn.......

so ABC basically killed off their big cash cow (only NFL football would bring in more money for ABC than this) and thats why no one thought ABC would actually go and do it.... but since ABC is owed by Disney, and Disney are in the middle of trying to buy 21st century fox, and SKY here, they did what they did....

Thank you. I'll take your word for it even though your post above clearly implies that by asking a question I am.

That's a good way of co-ercing people into accepting without question isn't it. Pointing a finger , calling names and labelling.

What part of what Barr said do you find racist ?

Having read a fair few of your posts on numerous threads I can only come to the conclusion you're a WUM. Not for one minute do I think you're a 63yo woman for a second, you come across as a teenage boy/immature man in most of your posts.

Oh and even someone seriously lacking in the IQ dept would lack the awareness that that tweet isn't racist.

So you are saying _ranny-crumpet is a man pretending to be a woman?

I think my post is fairly self-explanatory.

Do men have boobs that dust the floor ?

You are 63, let’s not talk about boobs.

Can I mention other bodily bits ?"

Ermmm better not

"Racism comes in many forms. some are in your face and others more subtle, all of which are wrong.

Fresh Prince and Cosby are perhaps dated examples ?

Maybe so but they where hugely influential in there time and Prince is replayed everyday. Im not saying they shouldn't be im just pointing out the bias.

I think they were very much a needed influence in their day. They were an antidote to all the white family progs that ignored black people and black culture. Good on those that TOOK the opportunity to give blacks a voice ( of sorts ) That has to happen before we can 'melt' I guess. I think they are dated now tho.

"as falls from grace because of twitter go, that was epic!

is it a topic for the lounge, or for the politics?

The lounge.

Worth pointing out she has also been epically offensive calling a Jewish person a Nazi.

She has got away with being offensive for years. It's well documented.

the problem is also she has "previous" in this, in that she compared another black lady who was part of the obama administration to an ape.... so its not a new insult

she also has "previous" in being anti semetic, and in pushing conspiracy theories

Were you impressed with ABC's swift action ?

Have to say I was. "

As mentioned by Fabio, Rosanne has previous form so I'm not shocked by this brohooha.

The Head of ABC entertainment is a black woman, which may sometimes explain the speed. She didn't sign off the show to be made, but two others who had the authority did. Obviously they backed her up when there was a decision to pull it. Let's not forget that ABC is owned by Disney and they might have had a final say in the matter as well.

With that in mind, I still can't help thinking that they were looking for half a chance to get rid of her. Apparently ABC were asking her to take down some of her tweets just before and during the first episodes of the season.

There is freedom of expression and she exercised that. However there are consequences of that freedom of expression. She paid the price.

She got off lightly in my opinion. Disney weren't too careful in courting her despite her well known behaviour until they had to wash their hands before they showed them. They don't look good in this despite the action.

it went viral because a white patron caught the whole thing on their mobile

She hasn't got off lightly. Her agency's dropped her. All the reruns of have been cancelled from all the TV networks. So no royalties. If I was a cast member and not working, I'd be pretty pissed off.

Her ex husband, Tom Arnold is weighing in too. Apparently he called her out years ago on her racist conspiracy theories and paid the price by being banned from working with ABC.

She's toast.

Also thugs don’t hangout in Starbucks... thugs don’t drink coffee "

I don't believe that.

Can you believe a journo would miss out on that scoop?

And would the guy who they were meeting be happy to be filmed doing a potential drug deal? I know I wouldn't, and would refuse to have that video released. I'd be adding for defamation of character.

Pull the other one. It's got bells at the end of it!

From Rosanne Barr to the Cosby's and then the fresh Prince of Bel air.

Do I think Rosanne Barr is racist? I haven't got a clue TBH. Was her comments racist? Yes and she has a history of this.

TBH I couldn't give a flying fuck about Rosanne Barr. There's enough racism in this country for us to try to solve.

I look at racism like drugs and sex. It's here to stay so we can either have these debates every time someone famous says something racist or not listen to the shite that comes out of their mouths and deal with racism that directly affects us like the time I walked through Leeds city centre and got monkey chanted by a woman. Thankfully her boyfriend apologised for her comment and I would like to believe that some harsh words were used when they got home.

Who the fuck is Rosanne Barr at the end of the day? No one!

"I was doubly impressed with Starbucks, tho I don't know what the racism was in that instance. I haven't read it yet.

Starbucks had two African-American men arrested while they were waiting for a friend to join them, because they didn't order anything. No other reason.

Maybe not Starbucks but somebody who works or was at Starbucks don’t you think? "

For Starbucks to close so many shops yesterday for training because of this, it suggests that there is a problem across the company.

Don't forget that this us the company who, in this country, have refused to serve members of the public wanting to buy food and drink for homeless people, in the midst of the Beast from the East, no less.

A company who are all heart.

I suggest their actions yesterday were an attempt to salvage their reputation in America.

actually i am going to give starbucks a pass here because this incident was part of a few that came out at the same time where there were white people calling police about black people going about their normal lives and they getting a grilling

the incident about the black yale student who fell asleep in here common room area whilst studying, and a white student rang to claim shewas trespassing....

the incident where a white person called police after seeing black people coming out of a house with luggage where in fact they had rented the room via airbnb......

the incident where a white person called the police about a black family having a bbq in a park.....

so there were a few of these going on at the same time.... which brought the unconcious bias conversation up

It really doesn't. It's a standard response to potential legal action. They employ over 200,000 people, mainly young and low paid. It's inevitable there will be racists morons in a group of that size.

Comedians/Comediennes think they can say anything they want in an attempt at humour, regardless of who they insult or offend.

Likening people to animals happens a lot; when it's likening someone to an ape it's racist. Is that because people think apes are ugly or something else?

I believe it's implying that black people are less evolved, but that doesn't work anyway because we did not evolve from apes. It's also racist because of the muslim angle, what does a muslim look like exactly!? They've even got ginger muslims these days.

Btw I'm not really a fan of Dianne Abbott. I don't particularly like her or hate her. She's just a professional politician like the rest of 'em.

Is this a derailment of the post onto Dianne Abbot?

Is this the most unsophisticated troll attempt ever.

?

You don't have the same outrage when the fresh prince comes into the conversation

That's because I found Fresh Prince of Bel Air even less funny than Roseanne. I watched neither programme and didn't quite understand those who did. How stereotypical of you to assume that I would like it!

Now I dealt with that deflection.

Back to the original question. Why the obsession with Dianne Abbot?

Do you fancy her?

Just be honest. You seem to be rather fixated.

I'm giving you the perfect opportunity to express yourself. Don't hold back!

It's as simple as i don't think she deserves her free pass! We're here discussing how outrageous the comments of some nobody journalist are whilst one of the most prominent women in british politics doesn't this kind of thing on a regular basis. "

Uh huh. Yeah right.

Let me post an emoji in your behalf.

Kiss kiss

He’s not very intelligent

Smart though. Certainly more so than many of the people who think he's ace(for some bizarre, self flagellating reason.

I think he is exactly what you call a longer schlong "

I'm not sure that longer schlong does him the (in)justice he deserves!

Is it true that they have axed the new show because of it. If so I think it's an absolute disgrace. She should get her arsed kicked for sure but to cancel a whole show because of one person's mistake is beyond ridiculous. I think it's shocking x

"What part of what Barr said do you find racist ? "

Possibly the intention was racist, but that cant be proven, certainly the resulting outrage and misquoting is racist.

But actual tweet was about a person not a race, and referred to a planet and a fundamentalist group not an ape.

So in my opinion Rossane is not as much a racist as the mob accusing her.

We talked about this. Someone (Barr) has just put others out of work (the other actors) because of her outburst. I’ve reread it and tried to find how she thought she’d get away with saying what she did.

So there is a historical context where the idea was advanced that black people were more primitive than other races. A lot of people misunderstand evolution and think we evolved from apes. So there's a history of racist jokes likening black people to apes. The planet of the apes is populated by apes and the person is black, so it's hard to know what else that would be a reference to.

There are over 1 billion muslims in the world and there is no single look they have. Check out the chinese muslims for more details. Furthermore, the muslim brotherhood is not a national specific organisation so again, it appears to be used as a term for insult.

I really can't think of a plausible, non-racist explanation for how that 'joke' works. But I'm open to hear it if you can?

Talking Stove ( i think the name is ) gave that explanation a while back. I thanked him because he was the first person to give an explanation behind the interpreting of the comment.

"Some people are racist without even knowing it. Already this morning somebody couldnt connect her tweet about comparing that black lady to an ape to being racist.

heard some really interesting stuff about 'unconscious bias' in the media this week, connected to Starbucks closing all their sites in the USA to do equality training after 2 black guys arrested for fuck all in one of their coffee shops.

Made me reflect on what my unconscious biases are... a phrase I'd probably heard before but not really taken much notice of.

Roseanne has not been a bit funny for years. "

No unconscious bias,

Never found her funny just loud

She has been a right winger and trump supporter for a long time

I find it ironic that her little brain has suggested an ex president should not dabble in show biz. Yet seems perfectly comfortable that show biz people can be president , i.e. trump is and she want to be

She is just a brash not nice person, but she does support the moron president fart
