Haha i missed the hip hip hooray bit

And the difference in 6 years. If the employer knew they'd be making a saving of 6 years, they'd be really really cross...

So am I!
I think we've got a bit of wait. It could be as long as 6 years.

Maybe he was in the finance dept and mistakenly tried to add on some VAT...

Unfortunately, the OP is in Hull where at the moment, a number of companies have either folded or have announced they'll close for good by the New Year. That's not including retail businesses.
Lots of workers will lose their jobs by the end of the year! |

I took voluntary redundancy a few years back. It was the best decision I ever made. |

On a serious note that is very sad and is happening all over, but this chap is only one year to retirement, with hopefully a nice redundancy sum |

Redundancy can cause very mixed feelings even if it was welcomed. Colleagues can change their attitude toward you, you can feel isolated if you're one of only a few chosen and statutory redundancy pay is not the life changing sum people seem to think it is. |

Despite my rather cheeky comments, I am in absolute agreement with the above.
Enjoy your early retirement.

Me too Op, we both retired early and we love it and we didn't have the benefit of a nice redundancy package. Enjoy! |

Only downside is,you get reduced payment the closer you get to retirement. Which isn't right in my mind. Nevertheless...enjoy OP |

Really? I know statutory redundancy is capped at 20 years and I know it's more of your 41 and over. I didn't know it is reduced if you're close to retirement age though. |

It was the case when I got made redundant. Some got more than others for the same amount of service. It was down to which age group you were in. |

Maximum statutory redundancy pay is just over £15k, the amount per week starts to taper off at 64, the maximum years a company has to pay for is 20. If you're over retirement age I think but I'm not sure that payments are reduced.
Your company can pay you more of course and if you have a company pension you are required to start claiming it if you're over 55.
Redundancy isn't always the cash cow people believe it to be. |

"The main thing is that the OP is happy! "
I don't know how you can tell that from the OP ..
No punctuation makes it difficult to interpret so unless the ops confirm they are happy then the statement is open to conjecture |

Mmmm I’ve got 20 years service.... I think we get 1 weeks pay for every year & if 55 over can crack into our pension scheme which is one of the best.

It's all on the gov't website. Over a certain age you get a week and a half up to a maximum figure. Then once you reach retirement age it goes down. You do have to take a company pension once you've reached 55 but you need to make sure it's enhanced to pay you what it would if you'd been able to work until the age you opted to retire when you took it out.
It can be extremely difficult to find work once you hit your late fifties especially if you have left a well paid job and have obligations that need a similar salary. |
