If your friend asked you to help them to get to Dignitas so they could end their life, would you?
Do you think assisted suicide should be legal and available here? |

I think if there is a legitimate reason for wanting to end your life because of illness that isn't terminal but means your quality of life is seriously compromised then assisted suicide should be considered as an option |

If I thought the circumstances warrant, then yes I would.
I’ve long believed that people should have the choice to live or die without being tarred by public opinion or law.
It should be a human right to choose. |

Yes if they had zero quality of life and they were able to explain the reasons to me. |

Blunt answer: Yes
Popular answer: Yes, if you've ever seen someone you love suffer knowing they're going to die and knowing they're aware of that their suffering was going to get worse- you'd want for them to have a choice.
I sat every day with my 9 year old step daughter watching her mother waste away in pain. You want them to live for your own selfish reason despite knowing what they're going through
Ok this is a bit dark and deep for Fab

Yes and yes.
I have seen many people suffer at the end of life and you wouldn't let a animal suffer that way.
We should have something in situation for those people with MND
But just throw this back at you.... the bill that was put through government last time would never have been passed- it meant that the person with the illness was so far advanced that someone would have had to administer the fatal injection. Could you be that person?
I think it's about the bigger picture. I could take someone there, I do believe it has its place in society and there is a need but I couldn't personally administer the medication that would end someone's life |

Oh absolutely yes! I am 100% all for euthanasia providing you are of sane mind, and that doctors can verify that. We can put our pets down when in pain and or dying, why can't we decide to end our life. (Legitimate reason of course).
We have more compassion for animals than humans. |

Yes. (Some of my mates I'd happily book the flights).
I think euthanasia is problematic on a medical, "hypocratic" level, more than a moral or ethic issue.
If someone has chosen to do something the rest of us could do any time, but they are unable to do it without our help, surely we should help them? |

I would help if I could but overheard a convo in a pub recently and the guy said it had cost 22 grand to take his family member over there.
I'd never really thought about the cost before. That seems a hell of a lot of money. |

I didn't know that info about the last bill. I think I could administer the injection but don't know until it was a reality. |

So to all those who say yes to both , have you considered the way that medical science has transformed so many issues in recent years ?
How would you feel if you assisted someone and six months later a cure was found for what they were suffering from ?
I recently had procedures on my heart done which wouldn’t have been an option until thirty years ago . And the list of advances including growing skin , transplants , etc.... grows every year .
I don’t think anyone who has lost any chance of recovery , and is in an irreversible state should have to carry on if they don’t want to , but one persons idea of intolerable discomfort isn’t necessarily another’s . |

That is the same personal responsibility arguement often used against Capital Punishment. I'm that case, if you knew it was the persons wishes, and you knew they were suffering. Yes I'd do it. Especially for a friend. |

The reality is plenty of terminally ill people kill themselves in Les than please my scenarios amd usually alone (because 'assisting' your terminally ill loved ones death by staying with them so they aren't alone can amd will get you arrested). There's no dignity in that. It's inhumane amd it's heartbreaking. |

100% to both. Without question. Having watched both my parents go through end of life care, I have absolutely no doubt at all that there is a place for it in modern society |

It absolutely should be legal. It beggars belief that we put cats, dogs and any number of other animals out of their misery to end their suffering, but perversely make it actually illegal to do the same for people. |

Yes definitely to both. How we can put human beings through the indignity of dying in pain and suffering yet wouldn’t put an animal through the same beggars belief. X |

I have properly considered this with regards to my mum.
She has MS and I'm her full time carer. At the moment her quality of life is good but if her conditions deteriorates to the point where she wants to end her life I would take her to dignitas. If necessary I would give her my small amount of savings to pay for it too.
I see it as the ultimate act of love. I don't want to lose my mum, I want her around for as long as possible. I would set aside my own wants and do what she asked without a second thought.

Yes, 100%
My Dad had cancer. He’d had it before and gone through chemotherapy, but it came back again and again. His way of taking control was to not have chemo again. We stood by him completely and I’m so proud of how brave he was. The end could’ve been much more dignified though. It’s why I support it 100%. |

Ultimately, this is always possible. Medicine is so advanced, after all. However, I think both parties would be aware of this, and ultimately it’s the patient’s decision. |

Palliative care plans are a good thing towards the latter stages but invariably leaves the patient to suffer some sort of pain etc and for their loved ones the inability to do anything but watch it happen....
In which case, with a heavy heart I would have to say probably - we wouldn’t see animals suffer the way we do human life.
Yes there are new molecules in research and development but it takes on average 10 years or more for new medicines/treatments to come to fruition in which case for most it is sadly too late
There are any number of legal ramifications around Dignitas that most Ill people would not wish to burden their families with.
It’s a difficult one but food for thought |

Yes and yes. Someone close to me is in deteriorating health and, has already spoken of his desire to end his life in a dignified way when it all becomes too much for him to bear. The thought breaks my heart but I understand his reasons and yes I would support him, tearfully admittedly, but would be there to the end. Don't let my pets suffer so why should he have to? |

It seems everyone agrees on this one .
So since we must represent a good cross section of general society , why isn’t it legal ? Surely if the government represents what we want as a general society , there should be clinics here ?

Absolutely yes.
I'm watching someone I love die slowly and horribly. I can do nothing. It's agony and not in any way what she would have wanted. No matter how hard we try to preserve the dignity of our loved ones at the end it's nigh on impossible. |

Having recently experienced my 91 year old father being called at 1 am to be asked if they should resuscitate my mother if her heart stopped I would say that it's probably much easier to say you would do it, than it is to actually do it.
I hope I would be strong enough to help a close family member or dear friend but faced with the reality I can't guarantee that I would. |

I think each case would have there onwards complexities....yeah we've all seen the cases were the person should be allowed a dignified death. But I do worry if people go for the wrong reasons as in just tired of the situation they are living in atm...also as I've not researched it much....I hope mental health is of some sort of barrier to it happening. |

Hence why my answer was I don't know if I could with a friend as as much as I knew it was probably the right thing to do I couldn't say yes or no to the question like the one to your father when it was a relative. |

If for whatever, that was the last option for them, if it was the only thing that would take away their pain... absolutely! I would want to hold them through it so they passed away knowing how loved they were.
With the right safeguards in place (Dignitas seems to have it pretty well sussed) I support the legalization of it whole heartedly!
With my wife having C.O.P.D. and, having suffered a stroke, it is something we have talked about and, may one day become a reality in our lives! |

Absolutely. I am all for the right to die, some of you know I work in a care home and I’ve seen some of my residents take days and days to pass away and it was heartbreaking to see them, the same with anyone suffering from an illness/condition that they are never going to recover from and give no quality of life, there should be choice.

Exactly!!! 65 isn't old!!!
Debilitating illness and incurable pain may be valid reasons to explore, but are alone isn't.
Heck there's people in their 60's far fitter than some in their 20's!! |

My dad is 91, has no need of care of any sort apart from the things I do for him like changing his bed etc and is not in a nursing home. My mum on the other hand needs full time care and is often hospitalised. I was helping her to the car recently after an overnight stay in hospital, a kind lady held my car door open for her. My mum looked at the lady and said "I should be dead"
They neatly indicate I think that one solution isn't the answer to everything. |
