By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

This is a thread for people who feel a bit out of the ordinary. Obviously by dint of being on Fab we're all a bit odd But this is for people who, unbelievably, feel even oddererer.

So what makes you feel different?

I'm spiritual but don't belong to either a Faith nor a wibbly wobbly new age cult. I've got a masters and love pondering on the philosophy of science... so don't tend to meet too many like minds in that sense either. I'm musical... but have a loyalty to mind warping tekno that doesn't tend to win me many musical chums. I'm into contemporary art, enjoy a bit of quirky modern music that sounds like a cat stuck in a hoover from time to time, I've lived abroad and would happily do so again, and I make my major choices in life based on my heart not my head (so basically I'm a nutter). And even in swinging I'm a fruitcake, preferring a gorgeous emotional connection that leads to passionate sex. All in all, I'm as weird as weird gets. Now if that isn't a chat up line I don't know what is

Over to you...

...dont leave me hanging

I’m completely different to everyone in my social circle, mainly cos of Fab and because I have sex more than once a month and actually enjoy blow jobs

But apart from that, I eat differently, like a slightly different genre of music, hate small talk or feigning interest in people I have no interest in. Don’t care about eyebrows or Love Island or anything remotely related to it!

And don’t need constant validation from social media which seems to be the latest thing at the moment

Ooh. I’m very spiritual, I’ve found lots of good morals in various religions, but never chose to sign up to a faith either. I believe the soul to be ever lasting.

I also believe in true love and get all smooshy when talking about it, I’m in touch with my feminine side.

I look to the star night and like the idea that we and everything is connected in some way, who knows?

I hugged a tree one time, and I get it. I understand tree huggers.

An oddball in all its glory.

I take the piss something chronic but wouldn't want to offend anyone.

I'm larger than life yet technically a "little person"

I'm confident yet have anxiety attacks.

Wait! Am I missing something? Did you just say you have metal hair?

I celebrate Xmas as the beginning of the new year... which it is (yet another oddity)

We are both teachers, I have many qualifications, and ask have my own nail business.

My husband has many qualifications and his own indie game studio that’s really popular.

We are also both massive geeks who love anything 80s and have far too much Lego between us.

In short we are about as immature as two mature people could be, hahaha! C x

I have been living without TV for about 11 years now. And I'm still alive lol.

A bit socially awkward, have trouble reading social clues yet work in care. Quite good at reading body language of my 'victims' (read: meets).

I'm not a big fan of dogma and closed thinking on either side. But don't let that pop the blood vessels in your neck I'm sure we can join forces in our critiques of organised religion. Some of the best books on biblical research are written by atheists

And I’m very very sociable, love meeting new people, have lots of groups of friends and can talk the hind legs off a donkey. Also not afraid of making a fool of myself.

I used to think I was different, and saw the world from a unique perspective etc.

Truth is, we're all a little odd, we're all a little bit twisted and imperfect.

Stop thinking about appearing to be different and just enjoy whatever it is you want to.

Indeed, the ironic thing is that, given modern day cults of individualism and narcissism, those who actually do stand out from the herd are those who realise that, in historical and global terms, 99% of us are actually nothing special and that in a hundred years time no one will be aware we ever existed.

I would concur with this to a degree... if only it wasn't for the fact that when I start searching for people who identify as being a bit different from the crowd I usually come across people who are much more on my wavelength. Ironically, I think there's something in that identification which is itself a tribe... and that's my tribe

I dearly loved my snakes spiders scorpions lizards and small mammals. Unfortunately they had to go before I left hubby. I miss them a lot.

I tend to think that belief in something makes it true. I mean the hot raw belief of the religious zealot rather than your vague belief you should win the lottery.

I am me. Bit too thinky, weird sense of humour, bit awkward, bit shy. But I'm alright.

I don't want to be an oddball. I look at the "norms" and wish I fitted in a bit more.

But then I wonder how many of them are thinking the same but masking it just like me.

I think we're all a bit more normal than we think.

I find it curiously liberating. We have a limited time on earth, we are of no universal significance, so we are free to make our own goals and manufacture our own significance.

The appropriate response is obviously to seek to alleviate any suffering where possible. But I also feel there needs to be a more positive attitude towards it from those who insist on very rigid and limited definitions of sanity and reality. We all have quite different experiences and there's a value to that

I just think it's a bit insensitive to talk about being gifted with mental illness. You wouldn't talk about people being gifted with cancer, even though that no doubt gives people a different perspective on the world

I don't know if you have ever been mentally ill, but it's not just viewing the world from a different angle. It's as real and painful as cancer and just like cancer you wish it would go away.

Tarantulas are totally different to house spiders. They move a lot differently for a start. Fluffy blue spiders on eBay got me started. Amazing beasties.

My daughter still has a snake and a leopard gecko at her dad's. She loves "hungry" her snake.

Did it work? Are you now in a different reality? Is that why you feel odd?

It must be nice to have that strong a faith in something though. Like religion or anything really. Shame that the ones with the fierce belief are often the nutcases.

I'm shabby chic meets chavvy geek. Gold toothed cockney wideboy with a thundercats tattoo.

I play the ukulele and emcee, which is hardly a classic music combination.

All this means I have a wide circle of friends, but don't feel like I truly belong in any of them.

How I see myself is muddled, how others see me....well you'd have to ask but 'bonkers' is a word used a lot

I love studying religion and beliefs, but I'm not religious, I'm a keen practician of mindfulness and meditation, I love so many people in so many ways, I talk to the sea, to the trees and to insects! It has been said my energy is addictive and uplifting so hang on of you meet me lol

Oh and I believe in faeries...

I'm normal but a question that sometimes drives me hazy is it I or are the others crazy?

Sometimes feel like I analyse things so much without even noticing or with any effort it makes me wonder why others can't see things.

Pompous odd ball... Hipster haha fantastic definition. Alternatively... twats who think having a beard is part of their identity

Ouch....I love a hipster, most of my friends would be classed one but they are definitely not up themselves. I guess I love a quirky fashion myself.

Sorry poochie. You know I love you right? (but only in a poly sense ) But that is kinda the problem with hipsters. Quirky fashion does not a quirky person make. It's very skin deep. Very... beardy

Oh and the hipsters I know are usually very deep, spiritual oddballs. Love odd people. "

Then I clearly have a prejudice I need to overcome Fancy giving me a hand with that

Of course I'm only messing around. I'm sure you and your mates are totally my sort of people. Plus... never judge a book by it's cover eh! But that does work both ways. Some pretty ordinary looking people can be surprising oasis of oddity

Oh I know, I’m just into the indie rock/folk scene so hang out in certain places full of similar peeps. I also love jazz and blues etc so not just stuck in one genre. I love festivals because that’s a place you can meet all kinds of weird and wonderful people. I also went to meditation class in San Francisco recently, I always go when I can there. Let’s just say that I’m pretty normal compared to the people that go there. It’s an eye opener but lots of fun.

I'm a football mum but I'm not mumsy

I'm sociable but don't stand with the other mum's at the school gate

I love running but can't run fast so can't join my running friends

I don't watch tv so can't join in convos of popular programmes

I could write a full list but I'll stop there X

The mums at the school gate. Jesus. Having done that when picking up the ex's child in a tiny Dorset village; I'd rather face off against a pride of lions. Holy smokes, backstabbing two faced gobshite central x

Continuing my long list of eccentricities... I love getting lost and, when travelling to far flung destinations, would far rather sleep in a rat infested hostel and have a story to tell than rent a hermitically sealed 5 star hotel room with cable tv and experience nothing different from if I'd stayed at home.

Everyone is unique..

I'm sure there are many people in the world similar to me and everyone else but never exactly the same

I'm not on any social media ( apart from Fab which is social - ish )

I haven't owned a TV in years, I don't watch the news or read papers.

I don't have or have ever wanted children, I've never been married and for most of my adult life I've always had a temporary lifestyle up until 2011 - travelling around in seasons - 6 months in the UK to earn money then 6 months somewhere cheaper and hotter for the winter months.

I don't have a lot in common with most humans and like my own company.

I like to fuck multiple people and shudder at the thought of monogamy or living with someone and having to consider them daily

"This is a thread for people who feel a bit out of the ordinary.

Over to you...

...dont leave me hanging "

I'm just me. A lot of people seem to think I'm odd or different, a recurrent theme since my early school days. But like I say I'm just me, I believe what I believe, I do what I do and try to make sure I don't hurt or upset too many people along the way.

Continuing my confessions of an eccentric... when I eat shrimps, mussels, etc I have to eat every one of them. This is because every animal that died so it could be on my plate at least deserves the respect of having had a bite taken out of it. To leave a whole prawn uneaten is to have killed it for no reason

I’m not sure I can be classed as different . But I do tend to stand on the outside circles of social norms for women in my age bracket.

I Powerlift , compete in strong women events, I’m a boxing coach, and I love drifting ,

Covered in tattoos too.

Means I don’t generally have many friends

There have been a few posts on this thread basically saying "hey ordinary people are cool too?". I certainly don't think anyone on here is ordinary. And even if they were, I would agree... being different from most of the people you see around isn't automatically cool. In many cases "ordinary" people seem to have more fun, have more friends, and can often be more relaxed in themselves.

But a key difference between people is risk aversion. Most "ordinary" people are risk averse to making unusual decisions. They get the usual job, marry the usual person, wear the usual clothes, join the usual websites. Others aren't this risk averse. They know their differences may make them less approachable in some cases. But they're happy to take that risk. Like music no-one else likes. Wear unusual clothes. Invest themselves in unusual pursuits. Join unusual websites

There is a difference. As an earlier poster said, no one on this site really sees themselves as "ordinary". We have all, by being here, made an unusual choice. This thread was more intended to celebrate some of our other eccentricities... and celebrate them it has

Oh I like you! I did a fine art degree, specialising in performance and video art. Got really into Baudrillard, cultural theory, etc. My vista has broadened now. But this stuff is still very important to me. Lovely to meet you

I always had a totally irreverent attitude to theory. I understood it but continually poked fun out of it. I think it's possible to create engaging fun art but also engage the higher faculties of those itching to scratch beneath the surface.
