I was watching River cottage last night and i adore Hugh Fearnley- Whittingstall...i think this landshare malarkey is a fab idea...is anyone signed up? Do you think its a good idea?
Landshare brings together people who have a passion for home-grown food, connecting those who have land to share with those who need land for cultivating food.
It’s for people who:
* Want to grow their own fruit and veg but don’t have anywhere to do it
* Have a spare bit of land they’re prepared to share
* Can help in some way – from sharing knowledge and lending tools to helping out on the plot itself
* Support the idea of freeing up more land for growing
* Are already growing and want to join in the community

Havent seen it but from what you have just said sounds an excellent idea. I know some schools have started to give the children plots of land.
It brings a real community spirit which is what we need. |

they are oversubscribed here theres a three year waitng list, i had heard about the landshare thing but had forgotten about it, im going to check it out as ive only been on the waiting list for 18 months and i love growing stuff! |

Same here witht the over subscribed. They got rid of quite a few here to make room for new housing. But a few years ago they couldnt give allotments away. My stepdad has a double one as they used to just stand there. |

My brother in law got involved in this scheme when they moved to a new village. It was a great way to meet people, He uses the garden of a lady who could no longer garden due to a disability. He shares all the produce with her and it gives her some company. A win win  |

It's a brilliant idea. We have a family alotment that we use and its a good way of educating yourself and the younger generations how to be self sufficient and grow your own food.
You should see the size of me marrow!! |

Oops Sorry...
Near me the association is looking to "request" that those who dont / cant tend their plots give them up... But there is not a big enough list of new tenants...
Sharing gardens is a magic idea... |

Its also very economical, my grandad worked on a farm and had a big piece of land that he grew all sorts of vegetables on. They used to get the meat when an animal had been slaughted. My grandma actually bought very little food as cakes and bread where home made as where jams and pickles ect. My grandma was one of the first people i knew to get a freezer to put everything in.
Its seen as "trendy" now but its just going back to the old ways and people need to find ways to cut back because of the economical climate.
Would be lovely to have the old kind of community back |

I can feel the good vibe..soft, warm smiles...sharing of spirit...with likeminded people...generous and thoughtful..
I will take a gander..
I`ve a real hunger to reconnect to the soil and a gentler lifestyle...
We`re moving from our flat to a house with a back garden..I can`t wait...
In my youth I had 2 alottments...10 rods each...happy memories...they`re a rare commodity now, the `ol allotments...

Old fashioned 1890's strip lot here, so lots of room for veg plot, and freezer is full, plus bags of potatoes in shed.
Diet varies more over the year now, i.e. tend to eat what I have available, and at supermarket look for the other stuff that is in season.
Alas garden is too shaded in the autumn, winter for most winter varieties.
Being home alone and working from home too, baking bread, cakes rather than buying makes a change from working on a PC all the time. |

After nearly 2 years on the councils alottment waiting list and looking at 2 more years after i read this post i went and joined Landshare, 2 weeks later ive been offered a lovely plot WOOHOO! thanks OP for this thread, i'll think of you when im eating my organic veg next year! x |
