The weather continues to make running easier. Remember running around frozen puddles in the pitch black?!

The FCRC sex-club social will be on 8 June at Vanilla Alternative from 8pm. Everyone is welcome. If you’ve never been to a club before, come along with us. It’ll be loads of fun to sit in the hot tub gossiping! There’s no obligation whatsoever to play with anyone. I can meet nervous newbies outside so we can go in together.
(Please note, you'll need to ensure you're a member of the club (Vanilla Alternative) and that you've booked a place for the event itself well in advance).

EXPLANATION AND ETHOS:
EVERYONE is welcome in the Fab Crap Runners' Club (the crapper the better).
From 1st January, a bunch of Fabbers began improving our fitness through running. None of us were natural athletes (I was a natural couch potato!) but we did it anyway.

FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS:
"Couch to 5k" (C25K) is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (I used Get Running). But you can join this thread to get fit by any means including walking and cycling - all are welcome. If you're expecting to be utterly crap at it (I mean reeeeeeeeeally bad), you're in the right place. Join the thread, tell us what your aim is and we'll cheer you on each week, just for trying.

Doesn't have to be far, doesn't have to be fast, just has to be off the settee...go on spot some spring blossoms, hear the songbirds, enjoy the greenness of nature coming out to play. |

We've all been exactly where you are now, those sprints to the ice cream van can be a challenge! Especially when you know they are looking in there rear view mirror and excelerating the buggers!

Good luck.
We are on week 5 and are thoroughly enjoying it. Our fitness has improved massively in just that short time and we generally just feel 'better'.
Start slow and stay there for a couple of weeks and gradually you will find your natural pace.

So.....still trying to run continuously for 30 mins!
Todays run, I decided to run the downhill but walk up the big uphill then I'm in the park where the parkrun is, I started running well but my legs hurt where I usually walk but I powered through and continued 1 full loop but on the second loop I did walk a couple of times I did a couple of stretches and then carried on.....at the end of the run and on my walk back I felt a bit disappointed that I'd walked but apart from my calves hurting I enjoyed being out in the sunshine.
When I got home I checked strave and to my surprise I got my pb for 5k 38.02
I ran/jogged/walked 6.8k nights tonight |

How has people's weight been affected by starting to run?
We have just started week 5 and whilst I wasn't exepcting to be shedding pounds, I would have expected a little to have come off.
I've (Mr S) been 13st something since secondary school when I played a lot of rugby but occsionally have gone into the 14st bracket. I am just straddling 13/14st at the moment but haven't noticed any discernable drop over the last 4 weeks and don't feel I am eating more.
Can I put it down to the excuse of muscle is denser than fat? |

Could be likely.
More running in your schedule could build up leg muscle. You may find yourself a tad more toned overall. Over time you'll see results, consistency is key.
One main reason I will do a long runs on a weekend is so that I can have the lardiest cheat meal I can find! |

If you want to lose weight you have to be in calorie deficit. You should aim for 400 ,500-600, 500-600 for breakfast, lunch, then dinner. Do this daily and you should notice a difference aiming for 1lb a week is healthy loss. |

I ran 5 miles this evening and used 750 calories, thats the equivalent to 3 sticks of twix, as has already been mentioned exercise will make you more toned and fitter but unless you eat less calories than you use then you won't lose weight.
A pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle.
I've gained weight training for a marathon (no reference to the chocolate bar!) because I've been eating to keep the energy levels up.

Similarly to prevoius answers ...weight is a crude measure...doesn't tell you what makes up that weight, body composition may have changed. Cheat meals be careful with if weight loss is your goal, calories always arrive faster than they leave! |

You might help (especially in this weather) to take some water with you when you go out - only a small bottle (overhydration can be as bad as dehydration), preferably with either an electrolyte tablet, or some squash and keep sipping it as you go along.
If you still get cramp, you may need to get some specialist advice. |

Hello! I didn’t know this was a thing but I need in!
I’ve only recently started on the treadmill at the gym (due to living amongst hilly ground!). Building up slowly and was pleased to manage four minutes running in one go amongst my one minute walk rest periods yesterday! Final total was 3.23km in 29mins. Not looking at extending the time I run at the moment due to it cutting into the rest of my gym time, just concentrating on improving what I can do in that time.

Just took up running semi-seriously back in September... I’m a regular parkrunner and I run during the week too- I just did my 3rd half marathon on Sunday with a time of 2hr 6min which I’m chuffed about
I’m in Surrey, let me know if you fancy going for a jog or some encouragement/coaching- I went from a 43min parkrun in September to a 27min one now! Running my 50th parkrun this Saturday! |

Dragged myself out last night to do my own local 10km loop - was aiming for under an hour but my legs felt stiff from the off (no doubt feeling the after-effects of hiking up hills in the Lakes at weekend). I got round in 1.03, but the distance was 10.03km, so not far off
One of these days I'll try it when I'm not feeling knackered already from something else! |

Did my 2nd run of week 5 last night (2x8 mins) and think I'm ready for the 20 min run. The only thing is I'm always faster and more comfortable on the later or last running interval, so hope I get better as the longer run goes on. Any tips that may help |

"Did my 2nd run of week 5 last night (2x8 mins) and think I'm ready for the 20 min run. The only thing is I'm always faster and more comfortable on the later or last running interval, so hope I get better as the longer run goes on. Any tips that may help

It's all down to the Couch to 5K app. The first week with the minute runs killed me (and I cycle a lot) but it's amazing how it builds up both physically and confidence. The knee supports, fitted running shoes and ibrophen gel have all helped too |

Yep, I had a mate when I was running marathons who claimed he was much fitter than me because he ran for a much longer time...there’s some logic in that I think! |

Advice please...
Had a headache going to sleep yesterday and had one all morning. Should I go for a run.
This happens fairly frequently and sometimes a run can actually help.

Go for it.
Isn't there something called a neck rule? Where if you've got an ailment above the neck- sore throat, headache etc then doctors say go right ahead but take it easy.
Anything below he neck like heavy chest, then rest is best. |

Running by time is as valid as distance, a 25 min run may take you a certain distance now, as you improve that distance will increase , timed running is often easier to fit into a busy day. |

There are three rules of thought:
1) you should stretch before and after every run to minimise any injuries.
2) you should stretch after running to avoid injuries and to make sure you don't seize up the next day.
3) you shouldn't stretch before or after running because it actually doesn't do anything.
I'm a three. I don't stretch and I've never been injured. Although if I'm doing a sprinting session with my club, then I do stretch before and after (but only because it's part of the session).
What stretches you need to do depends on what type of running you are doing. There are good stretches on the mainstream running magazine websites - Womens Running or Runners World.
Ignore Twats slightly sarcastic response, if I remember rightly, he is also a non-stretcher... |

Dont worry about timings, focus on what you can do snd what your looking to gain from it.
Im by no means fast, tbf i can probably walk quicker than i jog, but im focusing on the length of time i can do that through doing c25k. Speed will come after once my body is physically used to jogging.
Just do what you can do its not a competition with anyone. |

Beautifully put, personally no stretching beforehand, gentle jog to get muscles warmed maybe some run specific drills to get joints working & off I go. Love stretching, foam rolling & massage after, none proven to physically benefit, but psychologically I get great benefit with the relaxation. |

I ran!
Did two km of jogging then three km of walking interspersed with the fastest running I can do. It nearly killed me but it was fun.

We did our week 5 run 3 yesterday, single 20 minute run.
Change of venue as well so instead of running in the woods to hide we went along the towpath between Halton and Wendover.
We did it! Non-stop - apart from jogging on the spot whilst picking up the dog poo
By moving to a path it also meant we got a good indication of our pace and were just under 7 min/km which we are happy with for now. In the woods it was much slower.

"Not ran much this week....I'm running to get my fitness up for the coast to coast next month, 192 miles carrying all our kit well Wednesday we decided to go wild camping for 2 nights and walking for 3 days, just a trial to see how we went, ok we didn't do loads of miles but we did 12 on thur and I weighed my rucksack when I got home, I'm guessing it was around 2 stone! and I don't feel too bad. Finally getting to my own bed tonight, run tomorrow morning and catch up on washing and gardening......had a fantastic few days but missed you guys

"Not ran much this week....I'm running to get my fitness up for the coast to coast next month, 192 miles carrying all our kit well Wednesday we decided to go wild camping for 2 nights and walking for 3 days, just a trial to see how we went, ok we didn't do loads of miles but we did 12 on thur and I weighed my rucksack when I got home, I'm guessing it was around 2 stone! and I don't feel too bad. Finally getting to my own bed tonight, run tomorrow morning and catch up on washing and gardening......had a fantastic few days but missed you guys

Its from st bees in the lakes to robin hoods bay. It can take as little as 2 weeks but I've got 3 weeks off work and no idea how long it'll take.....pray for sunshine lol |
