Completely different era of music back then.
Personally I don’t think they’d stand a chance in today’s market. But back then they were ground breaking.
Most people thought guitar music was about to die and then the Beatles came along |

Ok mixed views but I see everyone's point. As for competing with today, I think they'd do really well as I can't think of any current music that compares it's all manufactured. |

Yes that was pretty awful but he's written alot for other people. I can't bare him he annoys me but I have to give it to his song writing. |

Hard to say.
Some of their stuff was just amazing and some was just utter tosh, that said at the time their was nothing like it.
I personally like about 75% of the stuff they released. |

I think early stuff wasn't that good and George Martin had alot to do with the influence in arrangement but from rubber soul onwards it just got better all the time, better better better.  |

Watch the documentary with George Martin when he gets various 'celebs' to sing his own favourite Beatles tracks. The best bits are when he talks about how the original tracks were put together. The rest of it isn't bad either. |

It was a different era then, in their time they were good. But a lot of the songs were run of the mill really. Plenty of other brilliant stuff came out when they were about. Yes I think they were overrated and Elvis too. XXX |

No. Not in the slightest. They were a huge inspiration to so many youngsters, they made music accessible to a whole new raft of bands who followed in their footsteps.
John Lennon was a musical genius, they sang gorgeous harmonies and made people smile with their style and charm. McC is a tit, but musically gifted, he wrote some fab stuff, also utter tosh, but most bands have some shit they'd rather remove from their catalogue of hits, surely?
Ringo can just fuck off, but Harrison was another gifted creator. They owe alot to the inventive creative genius that was George Martin.
Of their time, they were game changers. Now, would they stand a chance against modern music, it's open for debate for me, it's a yes from me. Why?
They wrote their own material
They could sing without auto tune
They didn't need gimmicks on stage
They played instruments
They were involved in actually producing the music too
Those things matter to me.
I could go on and on, but won't.
Definitely not over rated.

It needs to be looked at or just from the music, I like most of their stuff but not all but for the kids who in the late 50s and early 60s who had no multi channel TV, no radio 1 even then such bands were a light in the greyness that was this country music and culture wise..
Since then we have pretty much seen many new genre's but before then it was a dirth of pop music and they were at that time something different..

Whether you like The Beatles or not, not sure how anyone could say they were overrated - their legacy and influence lives on in so many artists today for one thing. Just the sheer volume of hits, and record sales they had is another indicator. Sure the early years were a bit "boy band" but get past that to Revolver, Rubber Soul and beyond and they came into their own.
The fact there's probably a tiny minority of people on the planet that couldn't name a Beatles song is another factor in just how huge they were - you couldn't say that about many artists either past or present.
All of the above and more show they weren't overrated - whether they were/are liked by everyone is a completely different (and subjective) matter. |

Favourite Lennon quote - when asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world, he replied, " Ringo is not even the best drummer in the Beatles".
I was talking about that quote today with my dad. "
It’s bollocks though. I think Ringo is a bit of a tit, but the idea that he was a crap drummer was way off the mark.
He’s actually a pretty unique, amazing drummer. Don’t take it from me - there’s a YouTube clip where the likes of Dave Grohl, Jim Keltner, Stuart Copeland and other greats queue up to say how good he was. |

Agree some of the early stuff can sound that way but how you could say that about the likes of A Day In The Life, Fool On The Hill, Something, Taxman and many more is beyond me |

Personally I love them but that's just taste I guess.
Overrated, well if you care to watch interviews with countless fellow musicians you'll see they were highly respected amongst they're peers which says more than randomers on here with personal opinions, on another side note practically everybody who's anybody in music has covered beetle songs so again that's not a sign of an overrated band or talentless musicians. |

Ringo isn’t a bad drummer at all, nor is he a great drummer. What boosts him in most people’s eyes is a pair of rose tinted glasses and a big dose of nostalgia.
He was a fitting drummer for the style of music they played.

Totally agree!
Think of your favourite artists...the chances are they will cite the Beatles as one of their major influences. And that includes musicians from all genres, whether it be punk or pop or anything in between. You might not like them personally but, there is no denying the influence they have had on everything that came after. That's not the legacy of an over rated band. So, definitely not over rated in my opinion or, any of the other musicians I love and listen too! |
