“I’ll tell you what’s on my mind! Ultimately capitalism needs us to be in competition with each other, as solidarity and mutual support results in us more clearly identifying the flaws in the system. Empathy, vulnerability and care are associated purely with femininity, and then femininity is framed as weak, inferior, and frivolous, distracting us from the important work of Achieving Things and Completing Tasks. Illness is malingering, empathy is ‘bleeding hearts’ those brave enough to talk about pain are snowflakes. Meanwhile those who achieve status via oppression of others as well as their own needs are lauded, celebrated and always encouraged. We are taught to enter this competition whilst comforting ourselves via consumption, eschewing intimacy and true connection, so that we don’t compassionately encourage each other to challenge why we’re in this competition we never gave informed consent to enter. And this is where we find ourselves.”
