Is making people live together the new way of exploring issues on telly now?

It's an interesting programme and will be educational for many. Philomena showed the typical response: penis = man, vagina = woman.

It'll probably be trash, they've probably deliberately picked people that will clash to make it 'interesting'.

They aren't doing much clashing so far, just learning from each other.

They've got a fairly good group together - plenty of discussion and learning going on.

The older locals, at the pub, were really rigid in their perspective, blaming the media/social media for portraying too much gender fluidity, as if people wouldn't really be expressing themselves as they really are

It's disappointing if there's any hidden attack against others, potentially when they don't have the confidence to fully share themselves.

It's the assertion that one person's *need* for *honesty* tramples on another's requirement to be taken as they present themselves.

The producers cast this well.

"Marcus is out of order!"

100% ! He seems pretty immature and insensitive. He wasn't innocently sharing information, there was likely some malice there, for others not sharing his 'priority' view that honesty should be all.

It was a reasonable first episode of a show. Some interesting decent and varied people and perspectives.

You don't take someone outside at a party for an innocent chat. Especially one that starts with "do you know about Romario?"

I've seen programmes where the focus has been just gender.

The blend here of sexuality and gender, and all the different permutations that creates, hopefully sheds a bit more light on how varied people are.

The conversations about their difficulties with relationships, alongside burgeoning relationships is also enlightening. They appear to feel safe to be themselves.

As a mum of a female to male transgender child who finally got the nerve to tell me 8 weeks ago. I applaud them for doing this program, having the guts to say “ this is who I am”. If we find it hard to understand put yourself in their body, how the hell do they comprehend it? Definitely need more education for others on this topic. Throughly looking forward to seeing the next one x

This is why I don't understand the stance people take of it just being a media induced trend, like it is something being done to them. I wish you and your son peace and happiness now that he is himself.

Just watched last night's episode.

Why would a trans man who just wants to be left alone go on this show?

And then top it off by flirting with a straight woman who made it clear she wasn't cool with gender change...

Oh right, sorry scripted reality to make confrontational viewing

Your post got me thinking.

And I recalled a piece by that twat Tebbit saying it was all a fad because there was nothing like this when he went to school.

Quite.

60 years ago, everyone was expected to conform to a normality drawn from religious conditioning.

Homosexuality was illegal.

Gender dysphoria was a mental illness.

Anyone who showed any signed of not conforming to the heterosexual binary was, essentially, singled out either as a criminal or a lunatic.

So it was little wonder such issues did not come to the surface.

Many lived their lives underground, many repressed.

I very much doubt that the proportion of gender dysphoria and same-sex attraction is any different today than it was 60 years ago.

What's changed is society's willingness to embrace variation.

We now have a culture increasingly that allows people to be themselves, to express themselves freely and to cast off perceived expectations of others.

The media has a role in raising awareness.

Sometimes it does that responsibly, sometimes it does not.

But the idea this is something new is fake news.

Scrape back the surface of history and you will find variation in all its forms.

It's just more open today, at least in this society.

Some people find that hard to accept, most do not.

So we just watched the show together , and the Marcus telling the straight girl is the most contentious issue .

Why ? She made it perfectly clear on the first night that she held very simple beliefs as to what a man is and what a woman is .

The guy that was a woman knew this too , yet he made advances toward her , knowing how she would feel if she knew the truth . Quite why no one else told her before they snogged I have no idea .

Marcus did the right thing by being honest before it went even further , which could have got the straight woman even more upset .

It wasn’t that long ago I read about a woman who pretended to be a guy , copped off with women and slept with them using a dildo . They were unaware he was a she , and she was sentenced to serve time for r**e .

This situation could have been the same could it not ?

As with most things in life - and especially when it comes to communicating with people - there are ways and means of doing/achieving things. If the guy who told the straight girl cared about the others there, he could have, just as one example, had a quiet word with the transguy, which would have preserved some dignity and respect for him: he'd not come out to others, which suggests that he's not as confident about it as others. That's just one option. I think the guy who spoke out is a bit of a drama queen, who potentially gets off on the turmoil he sets off around him.

Just caught up and watched both episodes, I'm yet to watch the debate.

My son is 16 and f2m trans, it had never been an issue for us as a family.

What I struggle with is other peoples opinions, why do people get so annoyed about something that has absolutely no effect on their lives? I really don't understand non binary, I've listened and tried but I dont understand it. I still have the utmost respect though for people who identify as non binary as how they live their lives had no bearing on me what so ever.
