It's the context in which used. Not the actual word.

"It's the context in which used. Not the actual word. "

This. Apply the word to chicken breast or cake and it is perfectly acceptable

"I like the meaning but not the word."
But I can't think of any other word to describe the stage between dry as the Gobi Desert and Niagara Falls . Maybe a small stream or brook ??

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

The other options that thesaurus give are no better...

Humid

Soggy

Soaking

Clammy

Saturated

Damp

Wet

Tacky

Clammy fanny has a ring to it but it doesn't conjure a pleasant image, sort of cold and unwell or perhaps dead... At least moist can be associated with nice things such as a Victoria sponge or a kebab, eg. that sponge was thoroughly moist or her kebab is so moist its running down her leg dripping all over the floor...

I think that as much as moist is disliked, gopping, sopping, soaking, saturated, oozing, or soggy are far far worse...

"Reminds me of moss"

I've pulled out lots of moss in my rainy garden today and got quite moist as I was at it.
