Can anyone else relate, and how did you get your libido back? Everything's terrific aside from this.

(I'm on 10mg citalopram if that helps!)

I didn't find my libido was affected by Citalopram. Could it be the underlying depression?

It's more anxiety than depression, but I'm not sure. My libido is low enough at times but now it feels like it's disappeared. I can't even be bothered to put time aside for myself either.

I did a year on Citalopram about 12 years ago and found my libido dropped off and I struggled to finish when I was horny

I can relate. I had PTSD, depression and anxiety and the meds knackered my libido. I’ve ended up on viagra. There is a female version apparently. The trouble with anti depressants is that they are good to depress your low moods but depress other things as well. Some people swear by herbal stuff like ginseng. Don’t try and come off the citalopram though, you could end up with rebound depression. I work in healthcare.

Try building up with just you and see if that helps stimulate it back into action. Then add an understanding friend.

Fluoxetine killed mine, Sertraline was borderline, no problem on Citalopram.

Go back to your doctor. Everyone is different, just need to find the right one

Anxiety could very well be the issue. 10mg of citalopram is a fairly low dose. Talk you your GP. Some of them are very sympathetic..

I'm going to try and take myself slowly. I'm not planning on being intimate with anyone soon as I'm also a bit self conscious of my body at the minute, just to add to it all.

I’ve just looked at your profile and you shouldn’t be self conscious about your body at all. It looks very nice from where I’m sitting xx

I didn't lose my libido when on various antidepressants, but I found I couldn't orgasm.

Cried me eyes out the first time I had an orgasm after stopping meds

When I was first diagnosed with depression the doctor put me on prozac and my libido went through the roof, then went on citalopram and crashed both mentally and sex wise.... Recently had to go back on meds after a few years off them and prozac didn't help this time and so far mirtazipine hasn't helped either... I'm due to go back to the doctor in a couple of weeks and hopefully will get something that helps strike a balance with depression and my libido

Hopefully you will get something that helps you

Been on these for nine months or so. Sertraline had unpleasant unsexy side-effects for me. Doc switched me to Citalopram but that made me soo lethargic and killed my libido. Also first signs of nasty side-effects again. I came off it recentlymand am seeing if I can manage without. Libido is already back and entertaining me.

I was on citalopram and my sex drive went through the roof!!

I think it depends on the person/circumstances. I had no sex drive before the meds due to anxiety and depression so when my mood lifted due to the meds, my sex drive came back.

To be honest, at 10mg they're not going to do too much for you. I was on 10mg in the end and then just stopped taking them. It's been nearly a year without and no adverse reaction to just stopping.

As I've found from experience, whatever your body type, you'll always find someone who appreciates it.

I was on sertraline (male) and it didn't really kill my sex drive but I just couldn't finish. Took a month before I was able. Numb feeling. Didn't feel happy or down, just numb. Awful time in my life. Ended up coming off them and just used to go to the gym which was much better.

There have been a few threads in the past about this - you may be able to find them and get more viewpoints.

Some people will get different therapeutic and side effects from different medication, even if the same class of drug. Switching to a different SSRI or SNRI may be an option to evaluate any differences.

I was on 40mg and was ok, (in that i had frequent rubs) could it just be you’re feeling meh about sex anyway at the moment?

There's a difference between being depressed and having depression.

I know you're not having a dig and I'm not having a dig back. I just feel strongly about the stigma attached to mental illness and make it my duty to educate those who don't know much about it

As for me. My gp tried every dose of every anti-depressants going. Mentally they did nothing positive for me but I put this down to the negative effects they had physically. I'd either sleep constantly or would be like a shitting dog, shaking uncontrollably. As for my sex drive half the time I'd be impotent the other half I'd be premature.

I've been med free a month now but haven't had sex to see if I'm back to 'normal' or not. But I'm not in a rush

Have you been on it long? Maybe once you get used to it, your libido will return. Ive been on 20mg and now 40mg of citalopram for a few years. Ive never experienced a low libido. Im horny all the bloody time lol. Always speak to your gp if you have any concerns xx

Finding this really helpful - I’ve just come off fluoxetine due to some unpleasant side effects & am on day 2 of 3 of no meds at all before I start on Citalopram 20mg. I’m hoping that I don’t lose my sex drive, but good to know to watch out for it!

Firstly, Sorry to hear that you’re on them as it’s not nice to feel that way.

I’ve been on meds for years due to BPD and my libido has disappeared at times but I’ve found that talking about my problems/issues/worries has helped.

There are underlying reasons why we are all on meds and I find that doctors are quick to prescribe without addressing the underlying which could be helped with therapy.

Everyone is different but we are all humans and we all need to be listened to x x
