I had an interesting discussion about this yesterday, about how different the roles are between a man a woman between the centurys, from the 50s where the woman was at home and the man at work, now where the woman is independent and as well how the pay gap, a woman can get as much as 70% less in wages for the same role, are we ever going to live in a equal society, whats your view? |

Also, this is not strictly true - many, many working class women worked. I can't think of a female relative in the past three generations who didn't have a job.
I think the pay gap was probably a lot worse then though, and jobs that women did weren't often full time or seen as a "career".
I think equality may come, but these things seem to go in cycles and we are currently facing quite a backlash in many areas of politics, there has been a rise of the far right, and with those politics go opression of women. |

I had a conversation with a male peer at a different company last week. I'd submitted a complaint and listed a number of failings. He responsed by suggesting we meet somewhere neutral where I may not be emotional.
I informed him my emotions come with me!
He would never have said that to a man.
Sexism is alive and well and equality still a long way off. |

Other way round for me In my previous job, I started and then the woman in question started about 2 months later. Same job, same degree, she was on 11% more than me. I complained and got a pay rise to match. |

I don't think it is possible, nor do I think it should be the aim to have an equal society. Men and women are biologically different and therefore have different skills. I do think there should be equal opportunities in terms of going into whichever career you want and making progress in that career no matter your gender, but I think we largely have that in the UK. |

 My friend Janet sings in a nightclub, and she's lucky if she gets £200 for an evening of about 4 hours of singing. Tom Jones's last gig he only did 3 hours and got paid £270k. It's exactly the same job, but she gets £269800 less because she's a woman. Disgusting. |

I have no issue with a man getting paid more than me for doing the same job. I do have an issue with a man getting paid more than me IF we have exactly the same ability, same qualifications, same years of experience, same years of working history, same work record with regards to capability and work ethic.
The whole point Of having pay grades is to enable an employer to pay accordingly to experience etc within a job role. Just because a man and a woman have the same job title, it doesn’t mean they are doing the same job!
Bearing in mind this issue really only ever arises in more professional roles, I think all aspects of a persons professional background should be taken into consideration when this comes up.

People rightly should get paid the same rate for the same job but quite a lot of companies, like mine, have pay grade scales where you can get personal pay rises based upon your annual performance. This obviously means that two people can be doing the same job but ultimately be paid differently. I'm currently paid less than a women at work even though we do the same job on the same pay grade. |

Also, this is not strictly true - many, many working class women worked. I can't think of a female relative in the past three generations who didn't have a job.

False statements like 70% pay gap are not helpful.
Equal pay is a requirement in UK employment. And in most uk jobs pay is equal for the same work. Where it isn't and there are no mitigating factors then simply tell your manager to balance the pay or get reported.
The extreme differences are usually in certain professions e.g. media, sport etc. Where the salary is negotiated based on your audience draw and the quality of your agent. That will never be equal between people let alone gender. But it becomes a distraction that the few abusing companies can hide behind.

Actually, not so much.
Can't do a direct link, but the American Psychological Association did a meta study of meta studies (ie an awful lot of data) and found very few differences. Google "Men and Women: No Big Difference". |

Not a lot of psychological differences yes, maybe skills was the wrong word. But there are obviously physical differences which do have an impact. I do agree that there are some gaps that have been caused by stereotypes though. |
