Make sure you read the persons profile first, then tailor your message to them, a compliment may help, and a little humour could be a good ice breaker.
I like messages that are a few sentences long, one liners get deleted and long messages can be tedious.

I wish there was a winning formula for this. I’m dyslexic so I have to read and re-read every message before I send it to make sure it’s right and seeing it just get deleted gets a bit irritating when I’ve made effort. |

It honestly makes no difference because I will always look at a profile first to see how far away they are etc and go from there. Unless it's a crude message then I probably wouldn't bother. |

Hello is my standard start off, sometimes i say a bit more, but if i was too meet people in a bar or public place my 1st words to them would be hello so i tend to go with that |
