So on a lovely hot day, I've come home and showe_ed to freshen up.

But am I unusual in not using soap? I never have, my mum brought me up to just use the hottest water I can bear. She has always had lovely skin, I don't think I'm doing too badly either, so is soap something we've been conned into using?

Working in the building game, I sometimes have to use acetone or even petrol to get expanding foam and tar, etc off my hands.

If I've not been in shower with in half hour of getting in from work I feel like a scrubber. Decent shower gel an bulldog face wash hand for the win

But why do you feel clean by rubbing a solid lump of scented saponified fat on your skin? You still have to use water to wash away the residue

Just feels good, squeaky clean skin and hair are a huge turn on for me. The Lush shower bar has sea salt in it which exfoliates beautifully and leaves skin soft and smelling divine.

Sounds a bit paradoxical, most soaps and shampoo don't work too well in salt water.

Part of the enjoyment of a shower or a bath is the shower gel/soap and the fragrance of it , the lathering and the knowing you are freshly washed . I can’t see any reason not to use them .

Never really thought about this much until reading this thread. I absolutely never use soap or anything else when washing my face, never have done, just a flannel and hot water. I do like using Molton Brown shower gel on the rest of my body though in the shower. Smells nice and dries very fast on my skin as well, so dosn't take very long to towel down and dry off after getting out of the shower.

Very hot water can burst facial capillaries.

I can't shower in hot water anyway

, it can only be warm.

I never use soap on my face, just a mild cleansing lotion at night and occasionally moisturiser.

I have naturally soft skin and only use Dove original to shower.

"Yes I use shampoo, and wet wipes on my skin"

Wet wipes contain plastic, alcohol and other chemicals to be soap-like.

Hot water alone won't kill germs but germs aren't all bad. If your body's eco-system works with your routine then stick to what you like. The shampoo is likely to run down your body.

I'm trying to _educe my use of plastic so have started using unperfumed olive oil soap and shampoo bars (Lush as that's the only place you can get them easily). I feel squeaky clean since using the olive oil soap.

Yes, this.I believe the body cleanses itself. Obviously a majority of people on here disagree, but it works for me.It has worked for my mother for 70 years, and she is a genuinely beautiful woman who looks nothing like her years.

Its the same as some people swear by drinking their own urine to maintain a healthy body ( I don't BTW!)If it works for them, who's to say it's wrong!

Soap is believed to have been around since 2800 BC. We probably use it, and other cleaning products, too much now but humans have felt that soap is needed for a very long time.

Thanks, OP, I've enjoyed looking up all sorts of soapy things.

Well, fairly basic biology tells you that drinking your own urine is wrong.

.

Soap / no soap is much less clear cut, but not using it doesn’t make you unclean, not by a long shot. And it’s more environmentally friendly.

.

Very hot showers can be bad your blood vessels. I have (mild) rosacea, so hot showers are really bad for my face. I occasionally enjoy a very hot shower, then regret it for hours, or even days, later.

.

So, for that reason, I kinda have to use soap. I use bars of basic soap rather than shower gels for cost / environmental reasons. I use shampoo, but put it in a dispenser to help use a minimal amount. Again, cost / environmental reasons.

Soap and shampoo cost pounds, unless you’re using very specialist shampoos and soaps.

Youthfulness is more likely to be largely genetic, discounting environmental factors. The main reason for aging appearance on skin is sun exposure.

My other half is in the 'little as possible' camp. He owns a single bar of plain faith in nature soap which he uses for hair, shaving and body. And will often jump in the shower with just hot water. Likes a rough clean towel too says it is good for his skin. He has always had good hygiene and lovely skin.

I am the complete opposite !!

I'm reluctant to use many things on my skin that aren't good for me but mainly use things that are hypoallergenic but have cleansing properties. We're likely living the over-clean lives that manufacturers have brainwashed to want though.

If most people actually read the ing_edients in most soaps and shower gels they wouldn't let there near there bodies again. Many are harmful and some even carcinogens original soaps made with natural.products produced less lather so chemicals where added. Try and buy a soap that's sulphate free and without refined petroleum products in.. they don't lather which most folks think makes them ineffective. Also it's been proven that using just warm.water on your hair is healthier than using any shampoos or such...just takes time for your hairs naturalmoils to reach a balance.

Always use a facecloth and hot water on my face then a deodorant soap like shield everywhere else and a basic shampoo for my hair...then stand under shower set to as hot as possible for 5-10mins

in the morning and then either a shower or a bath at night before bed...someone told me I am washing too much and removing all natural skin oils but I'd feel really dirty going to work or bed without bath/shower and probably be sniffing myself all day to check I didnt smell. Always used soap and water though dont get all these shower bath gels.

I use a coal tar shampoo on my very short hair/scalp, and don't usually bother with soap as the suds and hot water get me perfectly clean - I tend towards the 'only use what you genuinely need' camp but each to their own.

If the OP needs an assessment from an impartial observer, to report back on her intimate cleanliness, I'm happy to volunteer....

Hillside desolate

If a bloke had asked this he'd have got so much abuse!

In answer to the original question yes, I use soap or shower gel when I wash.

I’ve traveled extensively in the third world and let me tell everyone soap is luxury we take for granted in the modern world.

Without being rude to the less fortunate people on this planet , I have seen and smelled what not washing with soap can do to the human body.

Whatever did mankind do before soaps were invented?

I agree with the OP, never allowed soap on my face and use very hot water (and a little bit of aveeno oatmeal based cleanser) which suits me.

I believe we use wayyyy too much soap and related products these days and the impact on the environment is also consideration in this.

I couldn't just shower.. I wouldn't feel clean. I had an ex like that who then would use a wet wipe to freshen up before sex . It doesn't make u clean it just makes u cleaner. But any sweat remains under the wet wipes perfume.

Used to have to send him for a shower or a proper top and tail at the sink before he was let in the bed.

Soap has been around since the Babylonians.

There's lots of things women can get away with on here that men can't.

The purpose of having a wash is to get clean and be hygienic so why wouldn't someone use soap, shampoo or body wash?

Manchester (she/her)

I can't use soap, my skin is extremely sensitive (I once had a facial cleanser eat into my skin kind of sensitive). But I use fragrance free soap alternatives (non-lathering). I sometimes wonder if people think I'm weird in that I don't smell like product, but I'm definitely clean.

When I jump in the shower, I'll soap up the cloth, but I only use it on underarms, crotch and feet. The rest of me gets plain water, but as the OP, very hot then a couple of minutes cold to finish off. My hair's a #1 cut so I don't bother with shampoo either.

"This thread has to be a history making event on the internet......

Someone makes a thread saying they have never used soap when showering and every reply has been one of understanding and general politeness......

Just think about this for a minute and forget what the Op looks like.....

If anyone at a bar , work , club , party or vanilla dating site told you they have never used soap in the shower.... would everyone be so understanding?

I personally would end the conversation and walk away immediately....

But I get it , it’s Fab and the Op is beautiful.

Wow"

Is every single reply like that? Nope.

"Working in the building game, I sometimes have to use acetone or even petrol to get expanding foam and tar, etc off my hands.

If I've not been in shower with in half hour of getting in from work I feel like a scrubber. Decent shower gel an bulldog face wash hand for the win

I know the feeling when your using thinners to try get silicone of your hand's

Many dermatologists advise to use soap very sparingly and only use on underarms and feet , they insist hot water alone should be sufficient to keep your body clean and smelling fresh unless there are underlying medical problems . Make of that what you will. P.s ladies are advised to use nothing but clean water on their ladybits , soaps and gels can lead to thrush and b v .

Don't use soap. It'll dry your skin out which l make it more greasy.

When I was a career and I’ll always remember this, there was a lovely little old lady that when I bathed her, I would always hand her the soap for when she did her face, she would touch it every time and say ‘I never use soap on my face, that’s how I stay this beautiful’, always made me smile that one.

Geeky x

Yup. But I find that, if I use shower gel, I go through gallons of it. Likewise shampoo. I try not to be wasteful, even with the cheap stuff.
