Today is a sad day, after 3 years of near constant use, my buffalo coffee filter machine has finally given up the ghost, it went out with a large puff of steam halfway through making its final jug.

Reminds me of working in a hospital department on a Friday afternoon. The filter coffee machine had broken and a REME* technician had just come in and repaired it.
I was writing up some notes and figured that a mug of coffee would be a good idea but, due to the dismantling and reassembly, decided to put some plain wayter through the system to flush out any debris.
Five or so minutes later, as the machine gurgled quietly, I noticed an acrid smell filling the staff room. It rapidly became stronger and I thought that there was a fire somewhere and the fire alarm hadn't been sounded.
I got up to investigate and saw that smoke was curling out of the coffee machine, and the glass coffee jug was descending, at an angle, into the base as the warming plate melted its way downwards.
Subsequent investigation revealed that the technician had 'repaired' the machine by bypassing the thermostat, that heated the plate designed to keep the freshly brewed coffee warm, to create a glowing disc of metal resembling the Chernobyl reactors in meltdown.
