Yes he was. And reprised that roll in The Frightners with MJ Fox. And I’m sure we all see him in Toy story as well.
I’d have crapped my self if he’d have shouted at me in the face like he did in his opening scene, and what a f’in iconic scene.
I bet you could suck a golf all through a garden hose.

He was actual brought to Bassingborne Bks in Cambridge (where the training part of the film was shot) to teach the actor who had been casted for the roll of Gunnery Sgt Hartmen how to drill troops.
After a while it was very clear that the best person to fill the roll was indeed R Lee Ermey so he ended up playing Gunnery Sgt Hartman and yes many of his now legendary outbreaks were not scripted, he just rattled them off in the flow of things. |

There were some classic lines he can out with but the "reacharound" one will always be my favourite - he actually made the drill instructors I had during my brief time in the Navy look quite tame by comparison!! |
