Maybe brexit could change this.
Wasn’t it one of the pro- befit campaign false promises?
Yes, you should get to celebrate your country in a bank holiday. In my opinion.....
I don’t celebrate it, England sucks. |

Why not st David's day as well?
And st Andrew.."
That’s Scotland. And Wales. St George is for England.
Let those foreigners sort their own holidays out. |

You seem to be mistaken. It was Jeremy Corbyn's Labour party who had 4 more bank holidays in their manifesto at the last general election (fuck knows how they intended to pay for it though?). |

No, dragons are extinct because of careless George the Dragon killer...
We also abandoned the catholic church under the 8th guy called Henry, and with that goes all the saints.
We need a new, preferably English patriarch for the country. I propose David Attenborough |

Should St Georges day be a bank holiday ? In my opinion yes but its more likely St Georges Day will soon be outlawed, as the globalists and ther MSN have spent years attempting to make English people feel ashamed of being English, Cant even fly your own bational flag in our own country for fear of being branded either a racist or a bigot. |

St Patrick's Day is just one of many days that has been commercialised by the US and Brits have took it upon themselves to follow suit. Take away the commercial aspect people wouldn't make such a big deal about it |

Just came up with the perfect answer. Lets make Sir David Attenborough day 25th December.
Whole Christian world will celebrate English Nationalism day, and we get a bank holiday at no extra cost |

Sir David's birthday is 6th May, so it's a bank holiday on his birthday every 5-6 years. It's also only two weeks after St. George's Day.

St. George is also the Patron Saint of Aragon, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, and Russia. The saint day is the same (more or less - late April/early May) in every country. |

Leave saints days to be celebrated by the religious in a religious way.
The idea that anybody that's not religious would think it a good idea to celebrate a religious icon by going out and getting bladdered is bonkers to me.
Yeah, let's have a few more bank holidays and a few more party days but, let's have them in honour of people like Churchill or Mary Seacole not, a man that supposedly killed a dragon or, a man that drove all the snakes out of somewhere that didn't have any snakes or a man whose divine intervention at a battle helped save the day and the symbol of his cross stops witches flying down your chimney. Last of all, David, brought the dead back to life! Didn't like alcohol, banned it and, was known as David the water drinker... not sure he'd be going to the pub with you |

What a load of bollocks. My work flies the flag outside every day.
If anyone is ruining St George's day and the English national flag its those who use it to thinly veil Their racist and xenophobic agenda. They're taking the British bull dog down with them too!
Didn't see too many ashamed to represent their country at the commonwealth games the other week. No covering up of the flag then. |

Who says he has to be English? If he did great things to protect England, such as smite an almighty dragon, then surely he deserves to be our Saint no matter where he was born.

Some interesting comments, but to those who are saying we shouldn't celebrate religious generated figures, and don't get me wrong here as I am not a religious person myself, I ask this question then, why do you celebrate the two biggest days of calender, dedicated the biggest global fictional character ever created has 2 days if celebration, or don't you bother with Christmas and Easter |

Quite true. To bring unity in a country, wouldn’t it be more effective celebrating something that units us? Like our country. |

Not sure about a bank holiday, especially as we already have one 2wks later at the start of May, and another at the end of the month too.
But it's definitely something we should celebrate more as a nation
I swore an oath once to serve Queen & country, and was a licensee for over a decade, my pub was always decked out in red & white in April - the Queens birthday & our patron Saints month.
I now work part time in a local club & put all the bunting up on Thursday.
I have a flag from my window... My neighbour asked if England were playing, she was quite surprised when I said it was for St George! |

I worked the last very last bank holiday, and given a chance to be at home with friends and family who are also off, or be alone in work (I’m self employed) I’d take an unpaid bank holiday every day of the week. ESP if it lands on a Monday |

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land
Happy St George's day to one and all. |

You realise "St George" was never English. Never came to England and (surprisingly) never slew a dragon.
He was a persian/sybian Muslim.

The Dragon in Christian iconography is said to represent either the Welsh people or the pagans of ancient Britton (evil).
Either way i find it highly offensive and i'm not even Welsh. |
