Is that with them also freezing prices for 5 years?
Smartmetering is nationwide scheme.. Not just BG. By 2020 every house in the country are supposed to have one.
Just a fyi |

I read that although energy companies say we have to have them and try to push customers into getting them, It's not actually compulsory and we don't have to get them put in if we don't want. |

And once you have a smart meter you are stuck with your supplier... They don't tell you before hand, i was dropped that gem by the fitting engineer as he was on the way out of the door after completing the job... To change supplier now they have to come and change the meter again. If you are offered a smart meter, you should tell them right where they should stuff it... |

My new supplier just use the other company smart meter as a standard meter. Means I have to give monthly readings but easy to do for big saving when we switched. |

I thought the smart meters were supposed to make it easier to swap suppliers?? At least that's the marketing we've had.
I need to change suppliers our quarterly bill has increased from £90 to £160 on average the last couple of years.

"Switch supplier.
Outfox the market. Saving us £40 a month. " that's the sort of saving we are looking at, coupled with £37 a month on tv and broadband that's a lot of money for no apparent difference in what we already have |

Smart meters is a misleading term. They were in such a hurry to lay off the meter readers they forgot to agree how they should work before rolling them out.
So each company has different systems and they become scrap as soon as you switch supplier. But they don't stop you switching whenever you want, so you could build up quite a stock of stupid meters over a few years. |

"Try owning a gas Rayburn that doesn't work properly. It's scary how much I spend on gas"
I had a gas Rayburn. You can't turn on one ring, you have to turn the while bloody lot on ...both ovens and 2 massive cooking plates. I sold mine , but then had to buy new cooker and new central heating boiler. Wish I could tell you how economical new boiler is and how I am saving money, but my gas bills are still as bad |

"I was with them and have just moved to Sainsbury’s Energy who use British Gas, but it’s cheaper. Go figure. Just goes to show how little regard British Gas have for their customers "
Called British Gas yesterday and they said I'm on their cheapest tariff, but the adviser said with the increase coming up, nows the best time to consider switching
Whereas BT, spoke to them, there adviser said they can reduce my DD from £69 to £54 p/m. I asked how are they able to offer me this and they replied, taking away BT sport and 1571 service, so reduced service too, just saving cash, not getting an improved deal. Have signed up to +net, 3 times the speed, unlimited data and anytime calls, total cost £32.99 p/m.
Looks like I've been able to save one return car ferry per month, wonder what I could do with that extra mainland trip each month....Happy days |

"Change energy suppliers?? "
Easier said than done.
When smart meters are installed they are done so, so that only the installation company can use it. So if changing to another supplier you will need to have a new meter fitted and this will cost lots of money.
Another way of tying you to their supply. |

If sky put you Bill up halfway through a contract you have 30 days to leave and don't have to pay an exit fee as they have changed your contract. Not sure if British gas do the same. Also if your in your last 40 days or so of your contract they can't charge you an exit fee. Have a look and see |

Feel your pain!
An accident yesterday managed to wreck the Mrs' car (which was parked!). Damage bad enough it's probably a write off.
She's never made a claim on her insurance before & ironically insurance renewal came through the post this morning costing £75 more than last year at £535! Aaaaarrrggghhhhh.....

Not true, you can go back to reading the meter yourself, or new company can and will send a reader around. They just lose the dumb smart meter updates. |

Feeling a bit smug I changed to a duel fuel contract with BG in anticipation of price increases at the end of November. I’ve had new smart meters installed free. I also received £40 cash back from the app I used to find the cheapest supplier. My combined contract is saving me about £60 a month |

Not what I’ve just been told.
I asked the question direct to my mothers supplier direct about wether the smart meter could be used by another supplier and what would need to happen if we decide to swap after this meter was fitted.
Was told the meter only works with them and would need to be removed to allow new supplier to make supply.

you don't have to have smart meters - they only benefit the supplier as they don't need to send an employee out to read them or expect you to drop everything n tell them what your meter says - so really....they are the only ones who will be saving money...n now by hiking their prices they will just be making more money! they're just greedy fat cat bastards! |

Hahaha, doesn't surprise me at all. Never had a problem with what I had with 'em, just the cost of it. If I was having issues with drop-outs or such non-delivery of services then I might be worried. The fact I'm getting fibre to replace the copper phone line is a bonus. Son will be pleased as he's into gaming.
Oh crap! That means he's gonna be in more. |

If you want to save lots of money look into tesla roof tiles and battery.. Invest in an electric boiler and cooker rather than gas.
It is a case of speculate to accumulate but then not only will you not be paying for gas and electric but the national grip will be paying you for the surplus you put back into it generally for the tiles and installation after 12 months you have not only made your money back but also more.
Research it and do the maths... The reason its not pushed publically is because if it was done across the board we wouldn't need a gas or eletric company... No taxes there |

Not always the case, I had a smart meter with Scottish power and after a few months changed to OVO. They went back to reading a meter for a few months before fitting a new smart meter with them. They changed both meters again in the cupboard also. |

Simple That's hardly the point though. "
I think that is exactly the point they refer to when they say a smart metering will save money. You see how much you are using and turn the heating off. |

There are comparison sites re energy tariffs. I use MoneySavingExpert (MSE). My energy supplier is First Utility, which is one of the cheapest. There is no one company which is best for all. It is well worth joining MSE (free) and subscribing to the free weekly e-mails.
Smart meters may not work with a different supplier, but this does not in any way affect your bills or anything else.
A bit off-topic, but my car insurer recently quoted £221.97 for renewal. I went via a cashback site (Quidco) to GoCompare and obtained the same cover (fully comprehensive) for £128.32. I am also due cashback of £30. Total saving £123.65.
You will typically need 20 minutes to an hour to go through the entire process. Only you can decide whether it is worth the effort. |

Yes, letitbe88, to answer your Private Message, I really saved that much on car insurance.
I don't know why you sent me a private message asking me this. I am not interested in a private correspondence with you.
Why not do your own research to compare prices? |
