I’d love to truly surprise someone, but I’m rubbish. I’d just rather let them in on it so they can share my excitement.

I like both. I like it when my partner is a bit crap at hiding his nerves and excitement for giving me something as an example. It's nice to show others how much they mean to you and vice versa.
