So anyone know why it's called a boxing ring when it's most definitely square?

I read a headline that "Katie Taylor battered her around the ring" I nearly spat my tea out until Jay explained it.

Because in the bare knuckle days a circle was drawn in the dirt for the fighters and the crowd would circle around. The name just stuck

That's a perfect explanation, thank you.

So why didn't they stay with tradition and keep it circular? Saying that, it's probably because they need cornermen nowadays no doubt?

It was probably just easier to build a square instead of a circle when boxing moved off of the dirt floors
