A sad sad day for motorcycle racing, a great talent who will be greatly missed. Sympathies to Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards as well - an evil accident for all concerned.

"It was Rossi fault" It was a tragic racing accident, no one is to blame. It looked like Marco was trying to stop the bike low siding, when he appears to loose control and swerves in front of Rossi and Edwards. My thoughts are not only with Simoncelli but also with Colin Edwards who judging by the footage I saw must be in complete shock

How the hell do you work that one out. Marco lost control and fell into the path of Edwards and then Rossi. A tragic accident!
RIP Marco, a great racer and a larger than life personality. MOTO GP need more riders like Marco, he will be a great loss. |

I watched the commentary after... They were kept away... Baltista is in shock too.
If the other bikes had missed him, then it maybe another matter.. one thing that shocked me was how long Marco was laying on the tarmac with no marshals... I'm a Marshall myself... And that bit shocked me.
But whatever.... It's a tragic accident... One which I am sure is going to take some getting over by his good friends Rossi and Edwards.

You'll get over it....maybe while you are showing such public outpouring of respect you could show some for the 21 year old Indian Gurkha killed serving this country in a dirty field in Afghanistan this week?
Or do you just save your 'respect' for those who we are expected to see as more famous and more worthy?
That's the problem....the 'famous' are seen to be more worthy than the ordinary troops that are killed every week serving this country.
So if you don't mind....I'll keep my 'respect' and grieving private rather than posting it on a forum on a swingers website....
It would be lost on many on here anyway, as it doesn't involve someone 'famous'. |

Just because someone is famous doesnt mean that he deserves any less respect...
Your posts are just to annoy those of us who actually see Marco as a person and I have been lucky enough to meet Marco twice at charity events... and he was always happy to talk..
Just because you dont know someone does not mean you can be flippant about their death.. he didnt mean anything to you.. but to many its a tragedy..
People die each and every day and its just as tragic.. but difference between you and I, is that I would never joke about someones demise.. and that includes those that I perhaps thought deserved to die.

if you want to redress the balance then start your own thread about the young man, dont go trouncing all over a tread that is here to alow fans of this man to show their respects - the 'post new topic' link should work on your computer to
Whilst i have no clue who this man (or the 21 year old you mention) is it is sad to hear of someone losing their life, either in combat or competing in a sport they loved doing respect should be shown

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
I've never understood why some people 'ration' grief. I can feel grief for the starving in Somalia, and the little girl in China, and the victims of the Japanese tsunami, and the soldiers fighting abroad, and two racing drivers who died in horrific accidents this week. Saying that someone is not worthy of grief just because they are famous is missing the point. The people close to them are grieving just as the soldiers family is grieving.
Death is a risk in motorsport, fighting wars abroad, and living in an earthquake zone. No-one 'deserves' grief more or less than others. Someone has died, and respecting the dead is something we do. |

_abio I totally agree about Marcos style.. He actually reminded me of the good old days..before the bikes had all the helpful gadgets..
I was actually expecting in a few years to see Marco take the title..
Sad, sad and very sad... we all know its a dangerous sport.. but actually in moto GP there has not been a death since 2003.. and when you consider the speed and amount of accidents that actually take place, it is quite a safety record.
All my thoughts go out to Marco and his friends and family..

I think it's tragic for anyone who loses a life either as a result of a tragic accident, serving their country, being killed in the course of saving lives of others in the emergency services, dieing of old age, or bodies that have lost the will to live... I don't categorise, they are all a loss to the worl... but these things happen all over the world, every single day.
Remembering someone for their achievements in life, is far better than petty in-fighting over technicalities. Dev and I are going to a funeral tomorrow, for me it's for someone I never had chance to know personally - I shall still be going in my suit and black tie as a marker of respect.
Respect is something worthy of both the living and the dead.

I am sure that there are going to be some epic races in the afterworld.. after all many greats are there..
Its one of the few racing accidents I was totally stunned by.. I was horrified to find a set of photos showing just how the following two bikes hit him.
There is no words from Edward or Rossi from what I can find.. but I would guess they are both in a bad way..

Just woke up to this news and i actually thought it would not get a mention in here, was nice to see,but then i scrolled down to the section that you can only class as the "if you have nothing nice to say"section, unbelievable !
He made the sport extra exciting, watched many riders with that style and eager to against all the technical odds, winning attitude, Nori Haga for example, its all they know, what separates us from them, the bravery and skill to do that week after week, that can easily be applied to soldiers too, very brave and again something i certainly could not do, because im this mere member of the public who has no right to say who deserves my sympathy, but they automatically do. |

It is just sad sad and sad.. and actually the longer I have for it to sink in I realise just what a loss we have to the already depleated moto gp grid..
I am a valentino Rossi fan, but also a Simoncelli fan.. as I just loved his style.. When he was in the lower classes, I would watch those races for him... so when he was in the same races as rossi I did have a minor conflict of interests.. but I did feel simoncelli did add the needed magic to a pretty lack luster year.

Oh my god, how bitter and twisted do you have to be to lose all emotional respect for someones passing just because they are famous?
By using your twisted sick logic we should now not care about the ghurka previously mentioned because he has now been mentioned in a public forum so to an extent now has a level of fame attached to him.
At no point has ANYONE said that people are more worthy of our respect simply because they are famous.
Outside of friends and family, people are affected by events / people that are important to them. You seem to fail to understand that people may be upset about this persons death because of their respect for him, their admiration for his ability, their understanding of what he does away from the track. You know, things that make humans make a connection with another human being.
Just because he became famous does not suddenly invalidate any respect people may have had for him before his fame or since his fame.
To think that people are only bothered about Marcos passing because he was famous says a hell of a lot more about you as a very very sad and insecure and bitter human being than it ever will about the people who admired and respected him. |

I was actually thinking the same.. Edwards I think was leaving anyway... even knowing it was not your fault... it will take a lot to come back after that.. I think it is a good thing almost it was not the last race of the season... as with all that time to wait... I think that the mind would be in torment.
Next race will be a tribute to Marco...
I found online though a few horrific shots that they didnt show on tv.. and I have actually stopped looking now.. but there are thousands of tributes to a lost talent.

Where did i personally attack anyone...i felt the same about jade goody and princess diana.i cannot see that it is emotionally healthy to project emotions onto people because they are famous.
i also said all grief by family members is suffering, but by trying to claim that suffering as our own we are behaving n a manner that is close to rubbernecking.Wallowing in emotions that properly belong to friends and family of the deceased. This has been described as grief tourism, and many psychologists share my view that it is a sign of the cognitive dissonance of modern society.
How many of the people grieving here will visit their widowed elderly neighbour, make an effort to visit a bereaved person, and how many will cross the street because death makes them uncomfortable and "they dont know what to say"
It is the gap between cyber tributes and real life actions that turns my stomach.1000 people are dead in turkey,i have been on the phone twice tonight, one as part of a prayer chain, the other in conversation with the local red cross representative,as their is an emergency appeal being planned.
i save my emotional energy and thus remain unbitter, untwisted and mentally aware of where my emotions come from. |

I can see kinda what jemima means.. but to fans.. and I mean real fans.. you watch these people day in..
for me I have watched marco race since before he was famous...and have watched his talent and pure genius grow..
Its sad as he was 24, and just starting to show his real talent.. and what is worse is if the bike had just carried on going off the track he could have been here today.
Now I dont do religion..and I accept that this is just fate.. but doesnt make it any less real that this talent is lost in an already fading sport.
I am as sad for the loss for moto gp as I am for the man himself..

Its the fact that you have judged the people in this post and measured (by your own perspectives) the value and genuine feeling of their sadness at this loss. The general dismissing of their sadness as cyber tributes, and the implication that they do not care about anyone other than famous people, that says a lot about you.
To then feel the need to state that your feelings of emotion are more genuine and that you have personally been on the phone twice this evening (as if to prove that you REALLY care, whereas we are all bathing in public outpourings of cyber emotion). To me, the fact that you need to express your more meaningful emotional response is actually the shallowest statement of it all.
A prayer chain... bet thats really helping the Turkish people right now... |

I'm struggling to see why some are getting upset about others paying their respects for a young talented man that sadly lost his life today in a tragic accident.
I didn't and still don't really know who this fella is from Adam being honest.... It would NOT make me a "grief tourist" or a "wallowing rubber-necker" if I said a few kind words on an Internet forum about how sad it I thought it was that someone lost their life in any circumstances.
From what I do know of this man... he didn't do anyone harm and he obviously is much loved by fans of his sport. |

Two problems come to mind.
The first is about how hard it is to have a sensible debate about the nature of grief in our society today. Dissent from the Diana grief fest, or point out that it's exhibitionism to pile flowers by the side of the road where someone got stabbed in a fight with their worthless acquaintances, and no-one will listen to the rest of the argument. It's impossible to have a sensible debate about the life of the national grief objects, for fear you'll drown in a wave of saccharine emotions or that momument to national stupidity, the people who will speak no ill of the dead.
The second is that, in our narcissism and and our self delusion, we think as fans that we're more important than we are,and that our opinion makes a difference. Being nice to fans may reflect the character of the sportsman, or it may just be a smart career move. Of course we prefer to believe the former but...
There's also a certain self deception at work in motorsport. We kid ourselves the sport can be made safe. Even the competitors deceive themselves - they have to if they are to compete. My first racing hero was Tom Pryce, killed by a fuckwit marshal who was trying to get to someone else's accident. That was far from unique - John Surtees boy got a similar outcome recently. Other people have been killed by their own mistakes, or a dodgy weld, or their temper after they've realised they're being shafted by their team and their marriage is over. It's part of the sport, that the competitors will risk death for their moment of completeness and all that comes with it. Even when they know, like people in Vegas did, that the organizers greed made that track a death trap, still they do it.
I hope the Simoncelli family find peace, but there are other griefs that will occupy more of my time, and it's reasonable to ask if it's healthy to grieve in quite the way we do when celebrities we don't know die. |

There is no weeping / wailing/ people saying that they are overcome with grief / black armbands or laying of flowers.
All I saw on this thread is people saying what a waste of life and how sad for someone so young to die. Why can't people think it sad that someone has lost their life so young/ tragically?
Even if you didn't know the person, it is still sad....just like it is sad about the Ghurka who no one knew personally.
I really don't know why these type of threads end up this way. What is sad though, is you can't even have a thread like this go the way it is was intended which was to say something was very sad without it causing a ruck and point scoring.

I am as a fan, shocked by the accident that we saw this morning! Yes I said shocked!! Nothing to do with fame but has everything to do with ability and the way I felt about the guy!
I am also saddened by the way some on here who are always saying that they don't judge, have judged anyone who has shown grief at the passing of a talented young man!
Another reason it is so difficult to take in is the way it happened and the fact that deaths in Moto GP are a rare occurence..
Quite frankly, one of them I am not surprised about but I did kinda think that another one was better than that even though we don't always see eye to eye and have "crossed swords" on here..
For shame..

I'm not sure if you're addressing what I've said. I think we may be at cross purposes, but I think it's fair to say that I have more faith in a prayer chain doing some good than people telling strangers in an internet forum that they hope someone who is dead will rest in peace, whatever that means.
I'll say this. If you say that the death of a racer in a crash is a waste of a life, you have a serious problem with racing, because death is as natural and integral to racing as the pleasures of victory. If you choose to be a racer, you are choosing to accept that you might die. Does that mean that racing is a waste of your life? |

It is not natural and integral to racing. It is a risk that everyone accepts, but it will never be natural and integral. It is one aspect of racing that will never EVER come naturally to racing and will never ever be viewed as integral. In fact, I would say most (if not all) people involved in any form of motor sport will say it the LEAST integral part of motorsport that anyone could think of. |

I have said its a tragic loss of a great talent...
Moto GP to be fair actually has a very good safety record.. Last death in moto gp was 2003...
Yes you do get deaths in motorsport.. yet we lost two of what to me are the greatest in helicopter accidents..
I was part of a tribute to both those heros of motor sport. I was in the E of the colin mcrae tribute... It was a show of our support and love of someone that had inspired us..
I dont think for a minute that its a waste.. I am sure that if you had asked any great racer how he wanted to go.. it would have been racing hard... its just sad...
and yes I have been a bit upset.. but more because of seeing the accident. I was pleased to see that there was no re run of the moto GP this afternoon...
Motor sport is a big part of my life, not only when I can do I take part, I am involved behind the scenes at times.... I marshall and I have friends that are marhsalls... I watch it all the time and will make as many live races as money and kids allow..
I when money allows like to do track days and even got my msa licence to race... yes its risky.. but it is a passion...
Marco was a great talent and I think those of us that want to celebrate that should be allowed too...
and also express our sadness at the loss to a sport that is already facing cuts due to money issues.. take a look at the grids.. lucky if 16 men started...
to me the loss of someone who I saw as a future champion is a big thing..

Not got a clue what the hell you are on about and won't try to be honest.
What I do know is... I know nothing about bike racing, I am not a fan, I know nothing about the man who died...so I can't answer the questions that you are asking. |

To some extent there appears to be a sense of community with the regulars on the forums...I guess thats a fair assessment....I`m somewhat, thru choice outside of it..
Mayhaps, and I mean this with good intention...online communities are a replacement fer the type of society thats long passed...communities..families..etc...
I think as such its reasonable to expect...when such a thread is posted..you`ll get a percentage of people posting...a shared meaning !
A way of connecting to others and our thoughts and feelings...
Mabye....it refects our memories of someone who played a part in our life, however vicariously...
Mabye..its about our own mortality...a reminder of the fickle finger of fate...
Mabye this...mabye that...
I don`t think its mawkish...I don`t spend time viewing things overlaid with bucketful of cynism...
It is what it is...a community of forum users saying that saw an end to a promising life...as a sadness they wanted to share with mates or buddies..
Theres lots more to say...
But thats another thread surely...
Start a thread on ..appropriate grief..?
I didn`t know the guy....I didn`t know Johny Cash....but I felt it sad at their passing...I saw Patrick Moore discussing the end of his life....that was sad too...should I mention my thoughts...
Fuck yeah....they ain`t harming anyone... |

Im not saying you arent involved in motorsport, and if thats how it came across then I apologise. I am saying that I have never met anyone in motorsport who finds death natural and integral to the sport.
If you think it is, then I will accept that as your point of view. But seriously, (and I mean this genuinely and not for the purpose of disagreeing) I honestly have never met anyone in all the years of my motorsport involvement who has felt that death is natural and integral. |

"What does 'For shame' mean?"
for shame
Used to express great discontent, dissatisfaction, disappointment, often in a funny way; usually used after someone (including oneself) has done something wrong, committed a party foul, or said something not cool.
In this case? Disappointment at some of the comments that are neither required or IMHO fair. Also, so not cool!
I have no doubt loads feel nothing for someone who they didn't know, but I see no creedence in being openly disrespectful to those who are affected in whatever way...

Perhaps, like me, those people who disagree with you gave up marshalling and watching because the cognitive dissonance became too great? I only watch motorsport with a good track record on fatalities now, and Moto GP and bike road racing in general don't fit that template. |

I don't know who the guy was but obviously he meant something to some people and a great deal more to others.
I too find it difficult to mourn the loss of people who do not directly affect my life, or for those who I bear no familiarity with / respect for.
However, I would not wish to detract from others mourning or sense of loss, especially in the period immediately following the persons death.
That, to me, demonstrates a lack of respect not only for the person who has died, but more importantly for the people who do feel a sense of loss.
As part of our online 'community' there is a time and a place for flippancy, a place for bad taste and a place for falling out.
A thread about the death of someone who meant something to quite a few of the regular forumites, in my opinion, does not have a place for any of the above. |

All I will say before shutting is...double standards, by a few people.
