FAB CRAP RUNNERS' CLUB

WEEK FOURTEEN!!!!

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

Well hello Fab Crap Runners!

It's Week Fourteen! I know I missed Week Thirteen, which I'd love to claim was intentional but it was just that life ran away with me a little! 37 intrepid people reported progress this week.

.

.

.

STOP PRESS... STOP PRESS... STOP PRESS... STOP PRESS... STOP PRESS... Two dates for your diaries:

1) The next Fab Crap Runners' Club parkrun will be at 8.45am on Sat 5 May 2018 at the Great Denham parkrun near Bedford followed by coffee and gossip in a nearby pub. All welcome. Please RSVP on the thread.

2) The FCRC sex-club social will be on 8 June at Vanilla Alternative from 8pm. (Please note, you'll need to ensure you're a member of the club and that you've booked a place well in advance). Again, please RSVP.

.

.

.

EXPLANATION AND ETHOS:

EVERYONE is welcome in the Fab Crap Runners' Club (the crapper the better).

From 1st January, a bunch of Fabbers began improving our fitness through running. None of us were natural athletes (I was a natural couch potato!) but we did it anyway.

.

.

.

FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS:

"Couch to 5k" (C25K) is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (I used Get Running). But you can join this thread to get fit by any means including walking and cycling - all are welcome. If you're expecting to be utterly crap at it (I mean reeeeeeeeeally bad), you're in the right place. Join the thread, tell us what your aim is and we'll cheer you on each week, just for trying.

.

.

.

CRAP BEGINNERS:

Well done for joining the thread! The first step is the hardest and you've done that already! Keep us updated on your progress and cheer the others on. Everyone is welcome - even more so if you think you won't be able to do it. I'll list you here when you join.

Belfastblond Newbie. Completed his 129th parkrun this week. (That's fantastic. 645km!)

Cheeky Chelt Newbie. Doing an ultra marathon in May. Has felt inspired by this thread. (Welcome to the thread. Keep us up to date on how it's going).

cheshire_kink Newbie! Ran 5 miles cross country. (Welcome! It that the usual distance you run?)

classycoupleNW Newbie. Been learning to run. (Welcome. What stage are you at and what are you aiming for?)

Coquette69 Newbie. Has joined the gym because of the variety of classes and the pool. (Welcome to the thread. Let us know how you get on).

_otterabz Newbie! Initially found running really hard but has just completed a half marathon. Going to be a director of parkrun. (Welcome! It's really inspiring to hear from people who didn't find it easy)

Eroticfunman Newbie. Did 5km in the mud! (Welcome! Have you run since?)

Genman Newbie. Experienced runner. Ran 20 miles in Hull. (Welcome. How's it going?)

imlived Newbie. Downloaded Couch to 5k and did Week One Run One. (Well done indeed! Starting is the hardest thing.)

Psylocke Been running 5km and her knee is holding up. (I'm glad your knee is getting back to normal).

I’m planning a 10k

I've only cried in marathons, never out of happiness. But I think a lot of runners struggle with it at the start

What 10km?

I hate running, although last year I did do tough mudder and that was 12 miles but with the obstacles you don’t notice the distance. Need to sort one out for this year

Yay, we've made it through from January to April! Thanks to everyone for supporting and getting out there.

I'm always going out three times a week to run, but sometimes I can't manage the full 5k, no idea why.

My last run was the full 5km though so I'm going out there again tomorrow

Love running though not very good at it. Done 6 tough mudders and taking part in Europe's toughest mudder this year. Have also down tough guy in January past year. Think my halls are still warning up. Hopefully get to my 12th tough mudder this year

No such thing as never. It's not about cross country running it's about the atmosphere the laugh you will have doing it and the achievement you feel at the finish line getting your first orange headband and a beer. If i can do them so can you.

I’m writing this on the cool down walk after a successful 5k run. It’s really tough, but just because it’s difficult it doesn’t mean you can’t do it.

I sneaked under 7 minutes per km for the first time too

Well I’m not very well.

My slightly-tickly throat has become a sneezy, coughy, temperature-fest so I’m dramatically dragging myself into the injury bench with a cup of tea and some paracetamol.

Visitors welcome but only if you tell me how very brave I am and say that you’ve never seen anyone with such a terrible cold.

Is this (wo)man-flu then? Drinks lots of fluid and eat healthily (whatever that means nowadays).

Get well soon...received wisdom is that exercising with a head cold is usually OK, anything on the chesticles is a no-no. And definitely not with a raised temperature!

Hello! My little update......

Still running, but taking it easy as knee still not right, but don’t want to stop completely because I don’t know if I’ll start again, if that makes sense.

I am doing lots of dog walking though to try and strengthen my knee (averaging 12 miles a day). Probably doing the totally wrong thing though but it seemed like a good idea........

Week 8 run 1.....don't know why i still go with this as i end up running my own way as uphills seem to get the better of me I'm trying routes so i can keep running and not get beaten by the uphill bits another new route today and still beaten by it but a personal goal that used to stop me at the beginning, an uphill that i beat but slower in time overall.....i put it down to still recovering from my 14.5 mile walk on sunday as i still had aches

It’s just so much easier on the knees

Well done, stick at it. You don’t get the hills or the headwinds or the dogshit while training on a running machine but people still do it. Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Managed to put 3 runs in over the Easter break, with a 15 mile run on the Sunday - and unfortunately it wasn't an April Fool. Legs not feeling bad at all, so upping the distance by another 10% this week. Hopefully be ready for my long race in May.

I did a half a while back, got the time I wanted and kind of decided 'been there done that' although I do sort of fancy an off road half at a leisurely pace!

It's always good when you persevere and you end up managing a hill that beat you before. Well done!

Have done a couple of 10k and a 5k this week, and got a new 10k PB, knocked almost 2 mins off my previous

Supposed to be out tonight for a social run with mates, possibly around 10k, but I’ll decide later whether I’m going or not. Might have a lazy evening seeing as it’s my birthday

I did another 5k run last night, it was a minute slower than Monday's run but much more comfortable to do and I was able to sprint the last 100m.

For those beginners let me add that in January I could barely stagger for a minute's run at a time and I was never picked anything but last for school sports. You can do it too, you can be a running God like me

Question for the FCRC coaches-

Why does my butt and legs hurt, sometimes up to four days after a run???

It was never this bad when I started doing the C25k

Yes I know I'm going further in distance, probably explains a bit of soreness, but am I doing something wrong??

Twat, you mentioned I should try and run 2-3 times a week, but I darn't run when I'm still aching, so at the moment it's more like 1 run a week

I'm a competitive person, so now I know I am getting further in distance, I aim to get further each time!

Advice would be very much appreciated and a nice massage

What type of hurt is it? It might be ok to run. I was sore after my run last Sunday, but still ran on Tuesday and it didn't hurt Wednesday. Do you stretch/warm up/cool down?

Either that or a nice hot bath with some bath salts might help if it does still hurt when you run.

Advice would be very much appreciated and a nice massage "

One thing stands out from your post, don't try and run further every time... Consolidate distance, do short faster runs, run intervals.... Basically mix it up so you're using the muscles in slight different ways each time.... No guarantees but that's my first thought!

Classic approach is that you shouldn't increase your weekly mileage by more than 10% week on week, either on total mileage or length of longest run, and that every 4th week should be a recovery week ie cut the mileage right back.

Perhaps review your runs, and see if you're exceeding those guidelines, and re-adjust your schedule.

What type of hurt is it? It might be ok to run. I was sore after my run last Sunday, but still ran on Tuesday and it didn't hurt Wednesday. Do you stretch/warm up/cool down?

Either that or a nice hot bath with some bath salts might help if it does still hurt when you run."

I make sure I do the warm up and cool down, same length as the C25K. The pain is, I can't walk up stairs without a, oh my that hurts!!!

What are the best stretches, warm ups and cool downs to do?

I do the 5 min walk to warm up and over 5 mins walk to cool down (as the app says)

Forget being competitive. You need to make yourself as comfy as possible when running. There is plenty of videos on YouTube of people showing you how go run. Watch them. What you wear is important. Footwear most of all. I would recommend trainers by a company called ON. Expensive but worth every penny. You have to look at the hold package and not just going further or faster. Heart rate training and working in zones is great. Garmin forerunner does all that for you and is a very good piece of kit. Rest warmups and cool downs are as important as the run itself .stretch and never over do. Also listen to your body. Hope that helps

Now this is a case of so as I say, not as I do. I don't do a warm up/cool down and only stretch before a interval session.

I swear by baths if I have that type of ache, or try putting some deep heat on it if it hasn't gone after a couple of days.

If you like the C25K, I know there is an addition that takes you to 10k. Either that, or follow a running training plan to ensure you don't do too much too soon. And as the guys said above, it's good to switch up your sessions a bit.

Yes I agree with lots of the advice...run comfortably, warm up gently with loosening exercises (not stretching on cold muscles)...ease into a slow jog with walking first, stretch afterwards (if you think it helps, there is conflicting evidence about stretching especially if done incorrectly)...don’t use heat on already warm muscles (cold is better)...keep active afterwards rather than sit down...and listen to your body. Definitely don’t try to improve every run either in distance or speed, your running journey won’t be a story of steady improvement, it is a very winding and wiggly path. Keep talking and thinking about it, to yourself and others, as many of us have been there and nobody has all the answers for themselves or anyone else x.

You need to prove that you’re running by getting an independent adjudicator to be photographed performing oral sex with you and the Fitbit in the picture. I think those are the rules, or it could have been one of the adjudicators taking advantage of me

Good luck for your half marathon! You've got at least 7 weeks to train, so you should be able to get some miles under your belt. You might find it easier to do the run/walk method (lots of advice on the internet with training plans).
