I ask directly. I'll compromise if it's sensible to do so. If it's a household chore I just start doing it and point out I need a hand. Or offer to do something onerous if he/she will do something else onerous. Or keep a favour saved in the guilt trip bank for when I might need them to do something they normally can't be arsed to do.
