So wtf is that all about ?
She blogs that she would love to be kissing her 20 year son with tongues , but it’s seen as being illegal . Her son it seems is not so keen ...
Now I’m sure it was said with a bit of tongue in cheek (  ) , but how must her son feel about this kind of outburst ?

saw an item on tv earlier..it was completely toungue in cheek...same as when a mum might say 'i could cuddle you to death' to a child, nothing more...but its good fodder |

So to say it was funny as evidenced by the reaction of the interviewer doesn’t mean it is does it ?

Even the loose women panel said it would be a completely different story if a dad said it about his daughter . And furthermore the backlash from viewers who thought the loose women were supporting the comment by saying it was said in jest , shows that any reasoned person see it as creepy and wrong .

In chinese, the tone of the words is essential to their definition. This is not the case in english where tones are used more broadly to denote meanings such as saracsm, hyperbole and irony. It is a sad state of affairs that people want to degrade the english language down to just literal meanings and kill its richness. If anyone felt these comments were meant to be literally, then the problem is your ears and not her words. Hyperbole is funny, this was hyperbole. Everytime someone says some hyperbole, there is always a brigade of morons trying to get offended by it and take it literally. It's beneath you to go along with them, others I'm not surprised to see adding the chorus of fake outrage. |

I don't think she really mean it, it was tongue in cheek moment but she probably realise her mistake afterwards and cringe on her mistake, she doesn't look the type will do that, she just love her son a lot as a good mother. |

I grew up with comedians such as Bernard Manning doing tours , and it’s pretty hard to offend me .
I understand what hyperbole is too , and I’d be interested to see where one draws the line between that and what’s actually wrong on every level .
If you are a 20 year old lad who’s got a famous Mum , and she says she would love to kiss you using tongues but can’t as it’s illegal , then thats not in the slightest bit funny for him is it ? She may ( and others like you will ) say it’s hyperbole , but many more ( including me )will say it’s simply wrong , crass , and childish at best . |

I was trying to make the point that there is no such thing as protective custody for children - they might be fostered, or taken into care, but actually, in a case where a parent offers a genuine risk to a child (as opposed to a bad taste joke) the most likely tool to be used is an order preventing the parent from having contact with the child. |

You might want to note that those who think Emma Freud made a faux pas - don't claim to be outraged by it or offended by it and I haven't seen any of them waving the Daily Mail.

Funnily enough the embarrassment of the son was part of the wider context. Her whole point was that children hit an age where they start to push you away because they are more worried about what others think, than whether they actually want a hug. She was saying you need to push past this point because children always need affection from their parents.
It's a valid point of view and it was a funny joke, well delivered. Her son needs to stop being such a pussy and give his mum a kiss... on the cheek. |
