I respect everyone's sexial preference, however over recent days I have seen a new but for me a worrying trend.

This trend is for women to gain weight and we are not talking muscle mass here or post pregnancy weight we are taking about just over 60kg or 100lb in deliberate weight gain.

As a pt and what I am doing for my degree this is worrying that alongside the growing use of waist trainers which Victorian research has shown can cause organ falliur and even death.

1st question I have is why are people putting their life at risk in this way.

2nd question is what do they gain from documenting their progress from healthy to morbidly obese?

I've see this, there's a few ladies I've seen online who are escorts/cam girls who specially gain weight in order to get more attention/money

I have no idea why they do it to be honest, No amount of money is worth that.

If people gain weight naturally then it's different, people gain and lose for a host of reasons.

But these actually enjoy putting on large amounts of weight in a short amount of time as if it's some sort of achievement

Around 1 in 10 girls usually in the teens to 20s at the gyms i work at.

For the first thing no not on here although at Uni and on the internet I have came across healthy women with the desire to gain masses of weight of what is beyond healthy

My real big thing is to try and understand what the motivation is. Is it the fat acceptance movement (Which has done wonders in stopping discrimination) gone extreme.

I can understand the motives of steroid use, drugs, smoking etc. But this i find tragic and want to just understand why?

Exactly my feeling too. I don’t see a trend just the same strand of fetish there always was - hence why I was interested to hear where this new data was coming from.

No waist trainers corsets designed to make the waist slimmer by pressing in the waist. If worn for prolonged amount of time they can cause health problems.

There are a few who like to do the whole feeder fetish scenario. However, I wouldn’t say there’s a worrying trend. It’s probably less than the amount of young men who are taking a large amount of steroids in order to get really big at the gym.

Torfaen/Gwent

Feeding/Feeders have been around for a long time.

The age of social media has brought it to more attention I guess. I hardly call it a trend when it’s been around for years.

Some women are cashing in on the fetish. Same as sploshing/balloon fetishes etc etc. With the growth of technology more and more websites for niche things are popping up. More fetishes are being “discovered”

The waist training thing has also been around for years and is not the same thing as corsetting.

I've seen the odd story, predominantly in the States. My guess is these women that purposefully put on weight, would do so anyway, they've just managed to find a way where they can be paid handsomely for it.

Mate, as a PT you shouldn't complain. Obese clients are also known as 'long term income'.

Why people would want to be fat in general, I don't know. Not everyone wants to be nicely toned, most don't have the self discipline to get there even if they do want to. There's definitely a lack of education from an early age around nutrition but the fat parents can take a huge part of that responsibility.

Oh dear!

I’d say the latter is more worrying due to the rates of depression in young males. A lot of them are suffering badly with body dysmorphia. It’s such a shame.

People don’t generally choose to be fat. Much of the time, there’s a trigger, something bad happens and weight gain happens. Once that weight is on, it starts a circle of overeating and struggling to get it off.

There is no trend, but you're curious, about deliberate, extreme weight gainers?

Clearly seeing as the question asked had nothing to do with waist training and everything to do with you saying 1 in 10 girls at your gym go there to put on weight.

ok, well, equally, im sorry, but i do not believe 1 in 10 young women in your gym wears a waist trainer. if that is true, then that is a stupid fad specicif to whatever college etc you are at, young people will easily start following what they see as a peer, but to extrapolate that, surely it would be the same in every gym, and that is absolutely not the case, its nonsense.

"no offence here, but i am really confused and i have to say completely disbelieving of the idea that 1 in 10 of women in your gym are there (why would they be there?) to gain weight, fat specifically.

No waist trainers corsets designed to make the waist slimmer by pressing in the waist. If worn for prolonged amount of time they can cause health problems.

So the trend of 1 in 10 at your gym is for waist trainers?

There is no trend, but you're curious, about deliberate, extreme weight gainers?

"

Yes. I understand the desire or the pressure to wear a waist trainer I didn't understand the weight gain thing.

I don't think there's a purposeful trend. I think people not just women in general are just getting fat. Bad food taste good, is addictive and is cheap. We're also bogged down with work and drive everywhere. Our meats, veg and fruits are of a poorer quality these days too with all the growth hormones and pesticides etc... Like we actually have to plan our lives to stay in shape where a few decades ago they were just in shape from living.

Im sad to say but its perfectly possible.

How many men and women at gyms do you think purposly under eat. Take meal replacement suppliments. Possibly steriods or other ped's. Spraytans etc.... is it that bit a jump to say 1 in 10 body concious people would buy a waist trainer?

What are the perceived benefits of wearing a waist trainer while at the gym?

My opinion on people deliberately gaining weight and documenting it is that they have issues around food and probably need professional help to overcome that. If they're sexualising or fetishising weight gain I think that's a problem too.

Actually quite a few women wear waist trainers to the gym. I’ve seen a few at my gym.

Lots of “instabloggers” wear trainers while training/exercising.

I'm still struggling to believe that these young girls go to a gym in the first place, and tell people they want to become seriously obese, to satisfy a man's sexual urges.

1. At his gym girls wear waist trainers

2. In his collage he has noticed the obesity trend

Why people would want to be fat in general, I don't know. Not everyone wants to be nicely toned, most don't have the self discipline to get there even if they do want to. Gaining weight (fat) is definitely a trend. It's a leap though to say it's purposeful except for a very small minority.

Obesity was not a goal for the overwhelming majority of obese people, it was a side effect.

There has been some interesting comments made around this topic on here. There are several reasons behind why someone becomes a gainer.

1st I would like to comment on the comment about feeders donut because it's all about control. Having known people with a food fetish alot of the time the feeder is not the one in control and has ended up as such due to the person's want to explore that fetish side of themselves.

2nd the original op.said he understands steroid use etc but not this. It comes down to the same reasons. IE. How the person wants to see themselves. Sometimes it's just a personal choice. Both have there negative issues when it comes to health issues and doing anything to extremes is damaging to your health in the long run. Even the perfect toned body building exercising can be damaging.

Also take into account the pyschological and emotional damage people have and are using food as a coping mechanism. This Binge eating and overeating is where someone feels compelled to eat when they are not hungry and who cannot stop when they have had enough. Luke any addiction you lose control over it.

Add into other mental health issues, lack of self worth etc why someone does it is not an easy question to answer.

I am a big lad ex forces ex rugby player and when I had a nasty accident that knackered up my body I was unable to stay as active as I wanted. Then add years of addiction and mental health problems my weight became immaterial to me.

I am still active work a long number of hours and have lost alot of weight but I will never be back to where I was.

"I respect everyone's sexial preference, however over recent days I have seen a new but for me a worrying trend.

Where are you seeing this currently?

What she said.

I read an article recently.. the ladies goal (which she achieved) was to become obese to the point of being bed bound. Her motivation was that she would feel like a queen if her partner had to cater to her every whim.

Crazy to us, but the world is made up of all sorts!

To be fair you are not obese. There are people who due to bad habits and enviormental issues grew up obese and this is proven to cause higher risk of health issues. They are not stupid or lazy. They have simply gotten onto a cycle of behaviour they find hard to break. For the record I am talking about people unhappy with their weight if you are happy woth yours then more power to you

As far as the gym community is concerned the bigger issue is surely steroid induced body building. It's the other end of the scale but an 7% bodyfat heavy steroid using body builder is probably less healthy than someone who is slightly in the obese category.

Just look at the numbers of body builders who tragically die young, it's increasing.

Society is programmed to revere one and condemn the other.

So my answer to both of your questions is to ask those questions to the steroid users, you'll find loads of them at most gyms.

Sadly, the misuse of anabolics is just as misunderstood as the issues in OPs original post..

From someone who has a degree in human nutrition and who is an ‘instablogger’/lover of anything that improves the worlds view on nutrition and the food we feed our bodies, steroid use is nowhere near as sad as women who allow themselves to be fed by men in order to feel ‘accepted’

Actually quite a few women wear waist trainers to the gym. I’ve seen a few at my gym.

Lots of “instabloggers” wear trainers while training/exercising.

Some people think bloggers of any sort are experts. It's frightening.

Most of all they believe it themselves, so they sound more convincing

Gym/training/nutrition bloggers are the WORST

As someone who has work in the industry for a long time I have to agree... there are obviously exceptions

I’ve found there are some who genuinely know their shit, but usually they have backgrounds in dietetics or sport science. "

Like me i did my undergrad in see.

1st question I have is why are people putting their life at risk in this way.

2nd question is what do they gain from documenting their progress from healthy to morbidly obese?

Perhaps if these people had more access to education and information, they’d reconsider their choices in a bid to stay alive "

Health belief model dictates that. However one weakness of the model is that we are all Human and sometimes its not enough to say a behavior is self defeating.

The users of anabolics are misunderstood..

yes they’re still users, but there also a group of people so look after themselves much more than people realise

They eat extremely well, they are very educated and clued up on how to look after their bodies to get the maximum from them.

They eat and train to a very limited, specific shedule (predominantly very closely with well educated people and trainers) in order to push their bodies to the extreme based on research and science..

There is no research or science to back up living on a diet or saturated fat in order to gain weight

You're generalising.

The majority of anabolic steroid users are no better educated or clued up than anyone else and certainly do not have access to professional trainers.

Some anabolic steroid use is extremely dangerous with increasing numbers of recorded tragedies including death being attributed. It is acknowledged as being a major problem which is sadly increasing.

Building your body with steroids and then reducing your body fat to circa 7 or 8% is not looking after yourself. It is an unhealthy practice.

Ok...so here are some of my rambling thoughts..

Re food supplements...supermarkets sell huge tubs of protien supplements etc aimed specificly at bodybuilders. The pressure to look perfect applies to men and women, and chucking a tub of whey powder into your trolley alongside your regular shopping normalises that image & pressure.

Are young women trying to gaon weight to have a Kardashian-style arse??

And as a sufferer of a chronic lung condition, and long-term user of cortico-steroids, trying to get a physio referal to help with lung function, cardio and overall fitness is impossible.

And I can't sleep tonight. Grrr

The issue with steroid use is the number of young males using. It’s coming from a place of anxiety and dysmorphia about how they think their body should look. There’s a record number of young males who are now depressed, impotent and showing classic mental health symptoms relating to how they look.

I’d say that’s just as bad as women who allow themselves to be fed through a fetish, if not worse.

It’s enough of a problem that steroids are the only drug that has had an increase in usage. It doesn’t matter where it stems from.

However, that wasn’t my point. I was referring to the comment about people using steroids safely and that it’s nowhere near as sad as women piling weight on for a fetish. I think they’re both worrying trends, but I’d hasten to guess that the numbers of young males abusing steroids are much higher than women turning to feeders.

"Mate, as a PT you shouldn't complain.

Well aren't you delightful

I go to the gym and work out but I struggle to stay motivated to do so, Not because I "enjoy being fat" simply because I'm not unhappy with my body the way it is, Did you ever think that might why people don't go to the gym and be strict with their eating?

He wasn't referring to you, he was responding to the Op who was asking about people who specifically wanted to be very over weight.

No he wasnt otherwise he wouldn't have said "why would anyone want to be fat in general?"

He was clearly speaking about people who are overweight not just those mentioned in the original post

No. He couldn't have been clearer.

He said "why would anyone WANT to be fat in general?"

You changed the WANT to ARE and then seem to be taking offence at your own creation!

Ok xxx "

Weight gain that isn't deliberate is a complex issue, where people are at unhealthy weights. It's often not just one thing affecting each person either. Lifestyle changes with increasing age but without commensurate diet changes, physiological changes and potentially many factors that we don't know of yet, mean it's facile to want to say that it's just about calories.

But if that's the case

Why fund a health service for smokers. Drinkers. Steroid users. Etc as there are many choices that people make that put their health at risk.

And yet we do tax other unhealthy choices heavily - smoking, alcohol etc.

There seems to be a lot of support for minimum pricing on alcohol. How about minimum pricing on non-essential foods. Perhaps chocolates bars should always cost more than £3?

In the long run it comes down to many different factors why someone is overweight.

The assumption that someone does it because they want to is in some cases correct.

But there is alot of emotional damage trauma etc that had a contributing factor.

Like any addiction it's not as easy as just stop. The moral model of addiction is all about shaming and guilt and as such can make the situation worse.

That’s not a particularly viable argument in my opinion. People drink too much, they smoke too much, they work too much, and don’t sleep enough. The NHS spends the most on patients who suffer from lifestyle-related illnesses and diseases. These are poor diet, smoking and drinking. It’s not exclusive to obesity.

Perhaps if these people had more access to education and information, they’d reconsider their choices in a bid to stay alive

When you say, 'nowhere near as sad', what do you mean?

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, I just would like to understand why you see it as sadder?

From the outside looking in, its two groups of people putting their long-term health at risk for short-term acceptance of others.

Probably because steroids build muscle and muscle is always better than being fat

Steroids do not build muscle"

Really? Out of the whole thing that’s all you got?

And they actually do help to build muscle. That’s why they’re used.

***Male hormones, principally testosterone, are partially responsible for the tremendous developmental changes that occur during puberty and adolescence. Male hormones have androgenic and anabolic effects. Androgenic effects are changes in primary and secondary sexual characteristics. These include enlargement of the penis and testes, voice changes, hair growth on the face, axilla, and genital areas, and increased aggressiveness. The anabolic effects of androgens include accelerated growth of muscle, bone, and red blood cells, and enhanced neural conduction.***

A simple google search would have helped you.

"What business is it of yours if people want to gain weight really anoys me all these do gooder saying u should or shouldnt do this its not healthy its bad for you same with these stup 100 calorie adverts every 5 mins 2 a day max fuck right off same with the anti smoking brigade half of them are former smokers leave us to our vices we are grown up enough to make our own decisions

That's an interesting point you raise. However an anti-fat campaigner may argue why should we pay the health fees or taxes of our nhs to someone who has clearly no care about there own health.

Not my view just a known philosophic argument.

Also you assume that just because someone is over weight that they have no care for their own health etc. Would you suggest that those chronically underweight and who have major health issues also not be allowed to use the nhs"

Not my view mate, it was something mentioned in a lecture I attended at Uni.

There are a lot ingrained schemas some of them mostly stigmas. You find in obese populations and 5 increase levels of anxiety and depression beyond that of normal weight individuals (what your definition for normal is controversial). So what we have been taught at Uni.

I think anyone with mental health issues deserves help of some sort weather obese or malnourished.

You will find in the US 97% of obese people said that exercise is important but 97% of that 97% indicated no willingness to do Exercise.

Laughable really is .. its went from steroids building muscle to helping hence my reply.

Everything on Google is so true isn't it? If that's the case how come everyone who takes steroids are not walking about massive, with over sized muscles etc? Steroids to do not build muscle! Fact!. It's an enhancement, if anything it fills muscle with water, hence where the water baby thing comes from, and helps with recovery, muscles grow with hard training and putting the hard work in, and eating properly, I.e muscle growth happens through muscle fibres being torn and repairing through protein, carbs etc fact!. Penis and testes enlargement through steroids? If anything when taking testosterone the testes shrink through testicular atrophy, through high levels of it and the body not producing natural testosterone. Penis growth does not happen it's all a myth! Hair growth if anything causes hair loss and stop growing, hence why most people taking steroids have shaved heads etc, not everybody but a high percentage. A lot to do around steroids is all hear say, rumours and myths that people read on the internet. And that's first hand experience not Google!

B & M Bargains

I watched a trashy US “documentary” the other day, my 600lb life (or something). The woman had weight loss surgery and then got herself a PT and was (obviously) eating less.

She had met her husband at some fat appreciation society years before when she was heavy but no-where near the size she ended up. He did nothing but ridicule her attempts to lose weight, even took her to a drive thru on the way back from the hospital to get himself some food. It was actually disgusting the way he treated her saying “I am sexually attracted to massively fat women, I don’t want her to lose weight”. He basically wanted her to eat herself to an early grave to satisfy his sexual needs luckily she could see him for what he was, but a less strong woman could see a feeder as someone who cares for them and loves them.
