I always got that it implied "we don't meet unemployed as you probably wont be able to pay for your drink/ hotel/ taxi home) etc

Could mean, "we earn so much don't bring any money, we'll pay for everything" (;-)

The Town by The Cross

There's an awful lost of seething resentment and self loathing on this thread.

I take it to mean they have a job that is recognised as a profession.

Don't give me the old prozzy cliche.

Ah well ..... time to step over the working classes and relax on my estate.

Budge up....

As more and more people seem to be using the word on their profiles, I assumed they put it there to wind up the bitter and twisted hourly paid people.

The ones you need to worry about are the ones who cant even spell the word..

People...if your going to brag about being one please note, there is only one 'F' and two 'S'

Hang on you lot i am not on about people using the words it makes them this or that.

There is a reason people put it on profiles and its not something they often think up on their own. SOMEONE persuaded them! So who is that someone?

Strictly speaking there are only four professions - "Clerical" (the clergy, not office workers) "Medical" "Legal" and "Military".

Lots of others pretend to be professionals, and of course, language does evolve.

However, my suspicion is that the word "professional" is used sometimes in an unfortunate way, as in "doing business" in the way that people involved in the "oldest profession" mean it.

But I may be wrong.

I used to be in the military, however I now consider myself to be in a very good profession. I can't explain without giving away what I do.

I will do later and you will be surprised. I was just wondering if anyone else clocked it.

People nick bits from profiles they read. They see a word they like, think 'that describes me!' and slap it on.

Or are you saying there's a cabal of admin who message people and persuade them to add words? If I count every third letter on your profile does it spell the meaning of life?

I am totally confused by this wannabe conspiracy theory.

No no i have a brain lol.

I was helping a friend join and was amazed what i read. Actually encourage the use of the word!

When you join they suggest the following for your profile (Direct quote)

"This is your profile which will be displayed at: http://www.fabswingers.com/

Profile title (e.g. Fun couple looking for professional guys) :"

Strange one this one... On a swing site perhaps it should not matter what line of work somebody pursues; some might think that it means by association that the person is highly intelligent or wealthy or whatever...TIn my experience it is possible to find so called blue collar workers with awesome interests in history, music whatever making them really great people to meet.. and then white collar professionals who can be really boring and nerdy. For me the word "professional" in a profile does not register somehow, whereas wit and an allusion to some depth do. But that' s just me
