They need to look at sugar content in ready meals and the cost of lots of the food that’s good for you. Eating crap is cheaper, that’s why lots of people do. |

We only buy it at Christmas, then find a half empty bottle of cola in the fridge in February.  . It won't make any difference to us. However a report I read recently said a third of children are leaving primary school obese or overweight, something needs to be done and I don't think 35p is incentive enough. |

This is what I don't understand. People claim healthy food is expensive but it really isn't. I bought a big bag of sliced, frozen courgettes for a quid this week. Beans and pulses are reasonably priced even if you buy them in tins and as you say it's cheaper to buy an apple than a mars bar. |

My Mum's always said we used to eat better when she didn't have much money. When we eat crap it's because we're being lazy and splurging on things we don't usually buy.

I do think your ability to make the best choices where food's concerned is learned in childhood. My mum cooked from scratch, baked weekly, never bought crisps or other snacks and we had sweets on a Friday night. We cook from scratch and so do our kids. Although I use more frozen veg than my mum ever did but there's no harm in that.

It’s simply not enough , not by a long shot .
All this nonsense about those with not much money can only afford the sugar filled crappy food really makes no sense at all . Fresh fruit and veg is way cheaper , and water costs nothing .
Greggs is always full and half the towns in the country don’t have a greengrocer any longer .
Kids are getting more and more obese and at younger ages , because parents figure it’s easier to give in to their desire for crap food and drink .
Parents really do need to take a long hard look at what they can do to raise their kids in a healthy way . Just like a building that needs good foundations , so do we . Loading them up with fizzy pop is just plain stupid .

True. When I bought the frozen courgettes for a quid I seriously questioned the wisdom of growing any this year. It's entirely possible that it could work out more expensive if I have to use tap water to water them. |

I'd prefer government to only follow evidence based policy, rather than pursue so many things that aren't supported by evidence, including the badger killings.
They need to regulate the food and drinks companies, rather than allowing them to be self-managing. |

One thing I am very proud of is that none of our kids are over weight in the slightest and they (apart from Ads daughter) is sporty.
They have sweets now and again, fizzy drinks if for special occasions like if we go to a restaurant which is hardly ever.
It’s a bit harder to monitor them as they go out with their friends, mind you my middle one is always out (15) and unless I give him money, his dad never gives him any so he won’t drink fizzy stuff etc with his friends.

I would rather pay extra than get the vile surprise of sweetners in my pop. I don't drink fizzy drinks very often as there aren't many that I like and I much prefer a cup of tea, but every time I do buy some they have replaced the sugar with sweetners which to me taste bloody disgusting! Do people really need mollycoddling like this? It is ridiculous! The more we treat people this way, the more they will need to be treated like it and people will think they are never responsible for their own actions and that kinda rubbish is already far too common!  |

currently i question the suggestion that bad food is cheaper than good food ? of course some bad cheap food is cheaper than some expensive good food however I'm of the mind it is taste and NOT cost that is the motivator ?
I make a challenge that anyone give 2 days crap food, 3 meals no snacks and drink around 2500 cals
and myself and others match the two days with a healthy nutritional balanced alternative ?

I buy sparking water from Lidl for 17p for 2 litres and flavour with hints of fruit juices , I find a whole lemon will suitabley flavour over 6 litres x |

I dont ever drink any pop due to the sweetners. I think there was one brand of squash/pop in the whole of sainsburys that was sweetner free.

Wow...another minefield subject. My observations , from someone who has never struggled with my weight ....hate that phrase now I think of it . Anyhow...the whole nanny state thing drives me mad. Sadly regulation or personal choices need heavy handed legislative back up. Free choice & self regulation had led us to where we are now, how is that good. People make poor choices on a radio debate a listener emailed in with the '£1 for 4 Mars bars or £1.50 for 4 apples...guess what I bought & saved myself 50p' argument. Saved yes, but what is 4 Mars vs 4 apples going to cost you? Cost of everything value of nothing. The 'nanny state' of the NHS will pick that up. |

Coke have done a sneaky one in the last week....they have cut the site of Thier bottles...the big bottles have come down from 1.75ltr to 1.5 ltr bottles and the smaller 1.25 ltr are now 1 ltr bottles but the price is the same....sneaky feckers...and no inflation eh... |

And they have introduced new flavours of Peach, Apricot and I believe, Strawberry. No doubt they'll have added sweeteners or sugary based flavours to get round the Sugar Tax! |

When vending machines in schools , colleges an hospitals are only full of sugar an fatty foods even gyms. It won’t make much difference. The people I see drink it are addicts. An buy in bulk.  |

They have though, all the manufactures produce zero sugar versions if thier drinks.
But people still buy the sugar ones.
Adding tax/cost to a product is a proven way of manipulating the market in this case making people move to the sugar free options.
Be better to just tax fat people though, say extra 1% on your NIC for every % of body fat over 30%.
The testing would be a nightmare though lol

Why do you say "even gyms" simple carbs are a fairly important post/pre part of the majority of workouts you'd be in a gym for.
Muscle building = sugar taken immediately after training causes an insulin spike aiding protien transport, that's why post workout shakes are full of sugar
Endurance work out = simple carbs provide fuel so you can train long enough to build up your cardiovascular stamina without hitting "the wall".
Sugar in a gym is pretty much on a par with protien in a gym. |

What do you do when children eat at school, or afterwards before the parents get home? Some children secretly eat. Of course there are parents who will happily give into their children’s demands for sugar, but I think it’s sometimes out of their control. |

Spank your kids if they do that... Ohh no, you can't do that, because there is another law saying parents can't spank their kids...
