Adult site age verification postponed

The stupid idea from the Conservative government of having all users' ages being verified before any use of sites with pornographic material - due to launch at the start of April - has been postponed

Officially to help protect children, even though their parents can take responsibility for their kids, having internet adult blocks available as options etc, the government body has now announced at almost the last minute that it's not going ahead to schedule. There will be a public consultation period

There...

I’m not so sure it was a bad idea. Parents sometimes don’t get all the blockers right on home computers and some parents don’t bother at all. I’d rather children were allowed to be children for as long as possible without stumbling on porn. Just my opinion and bound to be unpopular!

The issue that I have with it is that it's a major invasion of adults' liberty to live their lives as they see fit, doing nothing illegal etc, whilst we would also have to pay for it, in many ways, to compensate for those children who we have already paid for the provision of adult site blocking via internet services. One of the ways that we'd pay for this control would be the financial cost of the government and tech companies implementing and operating the changes now into the future. How the adult verification is to be implemented is still uncertain (we were just 2 weeks or so away from it being launched) and almost certainly means that private companies will be enlisted to verify people, whilst enormous databases of porn site users will be amassed by the validation co. The implications for the UK helping to produce huge databases of citizens porn site habits is also completely wrong imo. We spent £millions of UK taxpayers money on the last changes, to get internet service blocking of adult sites - it probably should have been paid for by those who needed, on a pay as you go basis. Expecting taxpayers to fund even more is completely inappropriate.

We'd also have to potentially endure services that are impacted by such changes.

Children have adults that are responsible for their supervision until they are adults. Adult internet restrictions are in place, at home or on mobile services, until those adults with responsibility for their children remove it. If that system isn't working effectively, we should be put the onus onto correcting that system imo.

Younger people will be more tech literate than some adults, so the government, if they are hellbent on spending even more taxpayers money on changes, they should produce a system that any adult can understand or get appropriate support from the service provider, prior to it being used.

"What will they be consulting the public about?"

There is an estimate that between 25 million and 33 million adults in the UK access porn in line.

Can you imagine what they are going to say when some one asks them ...

Do you want the government to know you watch porn and what typre of porn you like?

But I guarantee they wont be the people thethey ask!

Bound to be the 90 year old mp's that they ask.

Although maybe they are the kinkiest.

Reading

Please remember it is not just porn sites. It is any site that shows any adult content which is regarded only for over 18 year olds. This would include this site, from what i have read online.

Strangely it could even include the likes of Facebook Utube and all other social media sites depending on the definition of "adult content"

The monitoring could only ever be by the site operators or complaints submitted by disgusted of Tunbridge Wells.

But the real concern is petsonal privacy. Do you want this or any future government prying into your private life or storing such data when we all know how goid data security is across the whole of the internet.

And just who is going to have access to all that data about us?

I don't have a credit card and have no intentions of applying for one.
