I'm totally addicted to this programme.
The brutality of some of the weapons horrifies and mesmerizes me at the same time.
My question, are there any bladesmiths that frequent the forum?

There are still plenty blacksmiths out there it’s a dying trade however like stone masons too, so many machines now to manufacture forged products in minimal time

I was talking in general, machine forged is still not competitive compared to casting, obviously some things have to be forged and that's done by machine but in general manufacturers avoid it if they can |

I believe you are correct, they refer to it as Damascus (if they score it, it’s ladder Damascus) but personally I prefer the look of canister Damascus. Clearly a massive fan and been googling how to build my own forge as quite tempted to try. |

Bring your hairdryer and a leaf spring..I’ll get my angle grinder and hammer..just not sure how long my bbq would hold up once we’ve added the blower |

Damascus is the type of steel used for very old swords,I don't think it's ever been actually recreated in recent years, it was renowned for being extremely hard yet flexible.
Japanese sword makers were and are known for there quality, they used serval types of steel to create a sword with both flex and strength.
Making the steel is both labour intensive and requires the right raw materials and an awful lot of knowledge |

I know a lot about blacksmithing as I’ve been brought up around one for the last 40 years as my dad is a very well known blacksmith. Blades etc are not his thing but I do recall he made a Damascus sword when he was much younger but only to demonstrate the process of making Damascus steel, as said before its expensive and very labour intensive and only done right by hand and with skill. |

You sir are correct, they never remade the original Damascus steel ever since people have tried but it a recipe that has been lost in time, as for the Japanese one if I remember correctly they use ice to sharpen the blade. |

I disagree, there are many blacksmiths who work In the traditional way and not sure what you refer to as recipe? It’s just the folding of steel and fire welding over and over again which creates the patterns. |

Original Damascus steel method was lost centuries ago, if you search around I think you might find it has. However we can steel make it just not as good as it was centuries ago. |
