"They might come out all guns blazing, might "

The time to come out all guns blazing was after the historic loss to Scotland.

A grand slam in England is one of the hardest games in Rugby to pull off. I think Ireland are going to come and play as if its a once in a lifetime game, so I hope England let all guns roar. I hope they both play for the bonus point even though there is no need to.

To be honest I don’t think we have much chance against Ireland, I’ll just settle for it being a good game and not too one sided

if they lost... scotland beat italy (likely) and france beat wales ... they would actually come 5th of 6..... but that would be too much fun!!!!

On the 6 nations thread I stated I had two £100 bets one for England to win the 6 nations ( I should have gone with my head and not gut and done Ireland ) and that there would be over 675 tournaments points so far there have been 560 points which basically means next week if each much can produce 39 points I will win one bet and instead of losing £200 I will lose only £28.I now no longer care where England finish I will be supporting every try and conversion and penalty scored.

. My whole thinking was based on Italy been the whipping boys and teams going for it a bit more with bonus points for 4 try's but now that there is not much to play for I think it may be tough to pull off unless England want to stick it up to Ireland.

The pace of the Ireland Scotland game on Saturday was staggering, and the force of the hits and tackles outstanding (and legal!)

Fitness is the difference, especially when you see some of the players are still competing all the way to final whistle.

Watching games from 5 years ago, it’s like they are being played in slo-mo

Just imagine then what it looked like in the 70's.

I went to an England vs Ireland game at Twickers in the late 70's & despite it being played on a mud bath the outside backs looked like they'd come straight from a washing detergent commercial - 'after' !

2 different performances from the same team, had Scotland played like they did today against England it would have been a different result..

today they were poor to how they have been certainly in the first and part of the 2nd but their fitness got them out of jail..

Was a good game BECAUSE of how Scotland, and to be fair Italy too, played....open running rugby which of course lends itself to mistakes, but makes for great watching. There are no sour grapes, Italy played their hearts out in the first 60 minutes, it’s about time they pulled something out of the hat just for the sake of their long suffering captain, he deserves a medal for wearing their shirt when he knows most games they will get a kicking, he should be proud of them today

Please do it in style - more than 7 point difference and don’t let them get any tries .

"Was a good game BECAUSE of how Scotland, and to be fair Italy too, played....open running rugby which of course lends itself to mistakes, but makes for great watching. To start nit picking and say they were "lucky" smacks of sour grapes. But hey, that's just my opinion....other opinions are available.

There are no sour grapes, Italy played their hearts out in the first 60 minutes, it’s about time they pulled something out of the hat just for the sake of their long suffering captain, he deserves a medal for wearing their shirt when he knows most games they will get a kicking, he should be proud of them today "

hey... don't feel too sorry for parisse... he gets to go home every night to a former "miss france" and "miss europe"

Yes, it will be interesting to see if he is still quite as effective.

The Scarlets coaching team deserves huge credit for the way they have brought the best out of not only Beirne but several others who they have brought in cheaply ( they have to operate on a fraction of the budget of their competitors).

Beirne will be a big loss though-seems a really nice guy as well as a terrific player. Wish him all the best.

You could, but I think that would have been harsh on Tuisauva, whereas the Zebo one was for me a stone cold penalty try and yellow card. Mystified why it wasn’t given to be honest. Greenwood's defence of the decision was comical.

As a rugby fan Toulon were fucking robbed.

Referee and tmo decisions have been shocking in all games where French teams are concerned this week and I personally feel that the European cup competitions have been severely damaged.

Munster played a great game and good luck for the semi but it’s a great shame that a sport with so many rules can’t be played by them consistently.

If you were a rugby fan as you say then you would understand the rules of the game, the Ref & TMO looked closely at every decision, and made every decision correctly. What exactly do you think was incorrect? I mean the forward/flat pass for Ashton's try went your way, so I think it's unfair for you to criticize the decision making.

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

I have more affiliation to Munster than Toulon so the decisions I’m talking about are not ‘my way’

It’s just an observation.

In general, French teams have been mugged off in almost all 50/50 decisions.

There wasn’t a forward pass for Ashton’s try. The ref and TMO got it right for Murray’s try. They got it wrong for Zebo I’m afraid, as he seemed to acknowledge after the game. But that doesn’t mean Toulon were robbed. Had the try and yellow card been given in the first minute the game would have developed differently. As we saw in the last minutes, when Muster needed something they somehow found it. As they have many times.

I’m no fan of Munster- I’ve never really liked the way they play the game, but you can’t deny their record in finding a way to win.

Fabio can you pick the 6 lottery numbers for me this weekend please. Lol. Well done mate.

Going back to someone's earlier point about Zebo's knock on. It was a knock on, hence the 5 metre scrum for Toulon, what Owens was saying was that he didn't deliberately knock it on as his hand was under the ball, not intentionally trying to palm it away but a genuine attempt to gather the ball. (Most of us know what he was trying to do).

Anyhow, another weekend of fantastic rugby.. Bring on the Semi finals.

Owens seemed to invent this interpretation! Of course you can knock a ball on with your hand underneath the ball! There’s no question to my mind what Earles intended, and I can’t see any rational alternative- he was trying to knock the ball into touch just as Ashton was grasping it ( in both hands). Penalty? Definitely. Would a try otherwise have been scored? Yes. Therefore yellow card and penalty try. Clear cut in my opinion. And unless Ashton was fibbing, that would also seem to be Earle’s opinion too!

I was utterly neutral regarding this game, if anything wanting Munster to win, as I think Toulon represented a greater threat if they got through. I’m also, as a fellow Welshman both fond of Nigel, and proud of his reputation. But he has always had a tendency to invent reasons for making decisions which he thinks are “fair” rather than strictly following the laws.

He invented, for example, ( I think, or at least he was the first ref I heard using the term to explain decisions) the concept of “ materiality”, by which he means ignoring offences if, in his judgement, the offence hasn’t significantly benefitted the offending side. It’s one of the ways he lets games flow - and indeed, games he refs are often more attractive to spectators. But there are several teams who feel his interpretations disadvantage them, and these include just about every French team. He is as disliked over there as he is lauded over here, and to be honest I can understand why.

I'm sure you mean Zebo?

The Law is quite plain concerning a knock on or deliberate knock on, resulting in either a Scrum or penality with a Yellow card. They all came to a collective decision (not just Nigel Owens) that as his hand was under the ball he is not deliberately trying to put it out of play, as apposed to hitting it on the side.

You have Two men at rapidly fast pace claiming the same ball, neither man at any time had the ball, so you cannot award a Penality try.

If's and ands, pots and pans.

if both of them had gone for the ball with one hand then i could have seen nigels interpretation.... the problem is ashton went for it with 2... and it looks like zebo was either trying to know the ball out of the back line... or out of his hands....

anyway...4 really good quarter finals.... should make for 2 really good semi's....

i fancy munster to beat racing in bordeaux more than i fancy leinster to beat scarlets in dublin....

if it is a dry day in dublin, that semi final could be a running rugby epic.....

we have been waiting on a munster vs leinster final for years, 50,000 irishmen on a jolly to bilbao for a weekend would be one hell of a party....

Zebo of course. Nigel’s conversation with his officials was rather one sided! One thing I like about his reffing actually, is that he makes his mind up himself- tells the tmo what he is seeing who then always agrees! His rep is such that no one likes to question him- certainly not among other Welsh officials- and it was a Welsh team.

Anyway, cracking games. Hope Scarlets can repeat last year and beat Leinster in their back yard. But I doubt it. They are down to the bare bones now in the backs and have a comparatively tiny squad. Likely to have to play at least one kid I think, or Varndell ( eek!) from now on.

Delighted that Cardiff beat Edinburgh. I think they are now favourites to win the secondary competition- beginning to put together an impressive squad. If they can ever sort out the interminable wrangling over the ground they will surely return to their rightful place as a huge club

Cant see any contradiction. Nige is an excellent referee, who has his idiosyncrasies, which please some and irritate others. My comment related to his peculiar reasoning for not penalising Zebo- that his hand was underneath the ball. I’m sure he got that one wrong, but that doesn’t mean Toulon weee robbed or that he isn’t a fine ref. They all make mistakes.

Delighted that Cardiff beat Edinburgh. I think they are now favourites to win the secondary competition- beginning to put together an impressive squad. If they can ever sort out the interminable wrangling over the ground they will surely return to their rightful place as a huge club

steady on there.... yes i fancy cardiff to win their semi again pau, but i fancy newcastle to turn over gloucester..... the falcons have been really good this season and gloucester have be..... gloucester!!!!

cardiff vs newcastle in the challenge cup final..... "

I’m hoping for Cardiff v Glaws. Nothing against Newcastle, but I’m a romantic where rugby is concerned and a big Cardiff- Gloucester game brings back memories of great days in my youth!

Stander is captain for Munster tonight in his hometown in SA.
