They often add something , or give an idea about the tone meant by a message .

Can be a double edged sword. May use them to try and soften malicious comments thinking they can get away with it often quoting look I was only joking can't you see the emoji

They have their place, if I'm feeling particularly lazy I'll use them instead of text.

They can help with tone but I do think they are overused. I could live without them.

It helps to give an indication of tone, to what can appear an otherwise cold, faceless message.

It's impossible to get across inflection in a written message. I think they provide an important function with regards to this.

We need emojis, sometimes they can brighten up the content of some posts by people using the wrong ones. X
