You may have to try and reset your body clock...

Assuming it’s not something like anxiety that’s causing you issues not to sleep the the usual recommendation is the following:

Stay away from caffeine

Make your bedroom mainly for sleeping (remove tv)

Do not use a mobile or any other electronic device 1 hr before you want to sleep (reading can be helpful)

Only allow yourself sleep between certain hours

Wake up and go to sleep at the same hours each day even on a weekend.

Some people this works, some other people it doesn’t and they are just predisposed to having difficult sleep.

I'm a student so I'm in my bedroom (dorm room) all the time.

Ah makes sense.... ok then just turn off all electronics (including phones) at a certain time (probably 11 if you want to try and sleep at 12)

Read some light hearted reading material. Wake up at 8am each day

Stay away from ‘energy’ drinks!

If you have things going on in your head of an evening (what to put into an assignment or what you need to do tomorrow), have a pen and paper, write them down then try and get back to sleep

Try to separate your work area and sleep area. Only lie on the bed when it's time you want to sleep.

Advise above is all good.

Try listening to quiet relaxing instrumental music and deep breathing. Imagine you are somewhere you find peaceful...lying on a warm beach...listen carefully to the sea ebb and flow on the sand, feel the heat of the sun and a gentle breeze...concentrate on every sense and just take long slow breaths

These are merely suggestions, everyone is different and work differently. If you haven’t had any problems before with sleep and you aren’t anxious for any specific reason, you may have just allowed you body clock to slip.

Best way to fall asleep quickly would be to have a hot shower, when you get in bed your core temperature should slowly go down tricking your body making it think you’re in a deep sleep so it shuts off

That doesn't work. I have tried it. I also get really warm in bed so I have my fan on which cools me down alot. Almost to feeling cold which is how I like it.

You don't want to be hot, your temperature wants to drop to allow you to sleep. Is the rooms dark ? Get blackout blinds. Don't leave a light on.

If you usually sleep ok, but now you aren't feeling tired, are you anxious or worried....

Try writing stuff down or discussing what's going on in your head at student counselling.

Get more active...do loads of exercise and tire yourself out ?

I go to the gym Monday to Saturday 2 to 3 hours a night.

I try to sleep in the exact same way as I have since September.

I've done it fine since February. Would come home at 10pm and go to sleep for 12am and then back up at 5am for work. Would do that Monday to Friday.

Well try changing, exercise boosts your heart rate and alertness which isn't conducive to sleep

Nothing I do is anything to do with my sleeping pattern. Its just started. I've literally done the same thing for a year.

You have no idea what's causing the problem, but clearly something is. So something needs to change

I read an article once that gave three tips to curing insomnia. I thought it was codswallop, but suggested my partner tried it as he suffered and it solves his.

1. Wake up at the same time every day, regardless of if you want to lie in or not. A regular waking time will help reset your clock.

2. Don’t go bed until you’re actually tired. Sit in a chair and read, listen to calming music, but don’t get under the covers until you’re sleepy.

3. If you wake in the night get out of the bed, your brain will start to assotiate your bed with sleep rather than unrest.

You’ll have a few very tiring days while everything settles. But those 3 rules worked for him.

ive suffered with insomnia for years and the best thing is to not worry or count hours of sleep - your body will sleep eventually

Studies prove blue light given off by phones PCs and tablets effect your sleep and keep you awake. The blue light LED screens give off can slow or halt the production of melatonin, the hormone that signals our brain that it's time for bed.

Assuming that as it's been a month or so having sleeping problems, that there is likely to be an influence from stress and that the op now has an habituated sleeping pattern - that could also be changed.

I'd focus on stress and whatever you can do to target any causes of it, which will include not sleeping well, so that your body and mind become more rested. Sort things out that are part done, don't leave things piling up, address things by priority, exercise - even if starting at small levels, eat well and get all the support that you can with your life and sleeping issues. Ensure that your social life is as good as it can be, as social interaction is essential for good health in general.

Avoid those things late in the day that may hijack your circadian rhythm, which will include blue light from lights and technology/TV. Replace them with activities that will let you wind down later in the day. Start the day with getting as much natural light as you are able to.

Too much change in one go may be overwhelming for you, so consider taking things one step at a time - you'll know yourself well, so manage it, so that's it's achievable and realistically comfortable.

Stop stressing about uni work for a start that won’t help, buy a metronome and use it in the evening, the ticking sound will act like a constant meditation and slows the brain down as you focus on it, like the above says, routine, discipline and no electronic devices after a certain time will sort it

If your wanking. Stop that too. I find if you have a few beers then sleep will help.

From your responses I'd guess your problem is a mental one. Go to your college mental health counsellor or GP they might give you something to help nod off.

Reading all the advice given it's the only thing I can think of, albeit probably the worst solution

Have you tried listening to classical music? It works wonders for me
