Its just a myth made up so they can introduce things like taxation on Carbon footprint (made up spin).

Had you ever even heard of such a thing 10 years ago?

Its a natural cycle and they will no doubt come up with a different name for whatever comes next!

typical example of end of nose thinking

So the UK has a small weather blip and the climate change denyers cite this as evidence that man influenced climate change is a conspiracy theory

try reading the 10 000 data points from across the world and within its atmosphere and seas logged for the last 150 years to perhaps give a less knee jerk analysis of world climate

They didn't have the tech we have today to glean such information back then so what are so said experts comparing their data against??

I know, but climate change is not about how hot it is, but how much energy is sitting in the atmosphere making weather events more dramatic.

As it is, this cold spell is caused by climate "hotness" - there's a high pressure area to the west of us that is big and bad and has sucked more air into it, causing replacement air from the cold, wintry east to arrive thanks to the jet stream. Add to that, the rain coming from the big storm to the south and we have lotsa snow!

So you may laugh and think, its cold therefore no climate change, but the reality is its climate change causing the cold.

Though I also think its a bit of a group-think scam without properly reviewed science as any scientist who even tries to check if climate change is true will get pilloried by his peers. Just like the days when scientists all said eating fat makes you fat so eat sugar instead... shows how scientists can delude themselves.

I think it's worth reading the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's reports, so that at least you'll know how the analysis has been made and the confidence levels attached to their reports.

As others have said, there are two areas of focus - globally, plus at localised levels. The earth has diverse systems that trap and circulate energy and various parts of it will be affected differently - actual sea level rises at different points will differ and the actual temperature increases in places will vary: some will increase more, others a little less. The expectation is that we'll have more extreme weather events and some of the recent ones may have been made more possible or more extreme due to global warming.

The worst aspect of global warming is that most of it has been caused by human activities and that preventing even larger increases is possible, if people take appropriate action.

For a superb laymans description of what's going on, get hold of a copy of "Climate Changed", Phillipe Squarzoni. It's done in the form of a graphic novel, but with real science background, proper references etc. I myself was at least a little sceptical until I read this. Now I'm just terrified, hoping that the worst effects hold off until it doesn't matter for me. If you have kids and especially grandkids be terrified on their behalf, we're past the irreversible point. All we can hope to do now is minimise how bad things get in 20, 30, 40 years time.

Actually this winter has been somewhat of a fuck up, not just here but all over the northern hemisphere.

The polar vortex which is a very strong high pressure which encapsulates the cold in the Arctic has been disturbed, the jet stream which is normally quite consistent is now meandering and at one point even crossed the equator (never observed ever before), northern Greenland spent 10 days above freezing, this in the artic winter when the sun set 3 months ago, the Arctic sea ice is at its lowest ever recorded and the North pole along with Alaska at times has been 30 degrees c above it's average whereas East coast USA and Canada has taken the brunt of the cold that's been unleashed by the collapse of the polar vortex.

Meanwhile the East coast of America has now record heat temperatures and now is facing a once in a generation storm which is actually the second one this year while the earlier dry and hotter than average West coast is now experiencing serve frosts.

And we've not even got into the sudden stratospheric warming last week which caused the weather we're currently experiencing!!.

Now I love a good conspiracy but alas this particular one got forecast 40 years ago although it's coming a bit earlier than they expected.

This is what 1 degrees warming looks like I'm afraid

There was a study, ultimately funded by a tobacco company, that provided evidence to support the principle that smoking was as beneficial to elite athletes as high altitude training.

Another study will demonstrate that using masks to restrict air intake achieves the same effect.

Then there are studies which debunk both theories.

"Climate change denial is in the realm of flat earth tinfoilery brigade these days.If a climat change denier can cobble together a paper that'll stand peer review I'll deep fry my testicles.

Conspiracy fuckwittery is all it is

I'll second this, I can't believe there are still climate change deniers in this day and age. Don't even get me started on the dribbling, tinfoil hat wearing flat earthers

I don't think people are saying the climate isn't changing,of course it is changing but it has been changing since time immemorial."

Yes of course the climate changes over time.We can measure the difference in co2 in the atmosphere on the past with ice cores. We can prove the Co2 in the atmosphere has increased rapidly recently. We can also prove the increase is man made and different from co2 released by rotting organic matter or the ocean's.Due to its isotopic signature. We also know co2 warms the planet. We also know a warmer atmosphere creates more hurricanes more extreme weather and will cause sea level rise.

So which bit of the above does anyone want to deny is happening.

The argument against man made climate change is similar to tobacco companies of the past denying smoking caused cancer and paying researchers to try and prove it was safe. The oil industry has put millions in to research to try and prove it's not happening.Theyve failed at every attempt.O to beyond reasonable doubt tat we've altered the atmosphere.Suck it up.

We aren’t saying that climate change isn’t happening and agree that as humans we maybe making things worse with carbon monoxide.

It’s the us changing our vehicles etc that boils the blood as no matter what we do as a country it will make probably a 0.04% difference if the rest of the planet isn’t going to join the party.

Doomed but we will be long gone before the real impact hits home and by then it will be too late.

People are obviously by nature short sighted and hate change. Its like giving medicine to children. They screw up their face and complain but its done for their own good.In the bigger picture the survival of humanity and the environment out weighs the inconvenience of change.

Regards the "It's all fucked anyway " response to climate change you are right. It's to late to prevent the damage already done the last hundred years will effect the next 1000 years. Its not to late however to prevent the loss of ecosystems and biodiversity that have existed for millions of years and will never come back the same.

"Regarding climate change, if 9 out of 10 doctors said you had cancer can we have a show of hands of those who would choose to be treated by the one doctor who disagrees with other 9 .

Let's play the odds and not go extinct people. "

Good point, even if the split was equal not many of us would sit out the outcome on the off chance we might die!

So why second guess global warming? I've not heard ANY scientists proclaim carbon emissions are GOOD for the environment!

If ever there was a failure by the mainstream media to portray an honest picture this is it.

The Oscars will make headlines along with who won I'm a celebrity and dancing on Ice but 85% of the population are completely or very lacking in the realities of climate change, the perception of 2100 is locked in their brains and that's the fault of the far too conservative IPCC, this arbitrary 2100 2 degrees warming nonsense has for far too long being used as some figure for Domesday, the reality is far far far worse, the nay sayers will state that the computer models aren't accurate and they're right, pretty much every computer model has UNDER played the severity and OVER played the time schedule, we're seeing things TODAY that computer models didn't forecast till 2050, scientists by nature are conservative on outcomes and probabilities and that's a recipe for disaster.

The media need to stop using celebrities and politicians like al gore to put the case forward and start putting on the actual scientists on the six o clock news such is the importance of the next 15 years

There is some agreement on this latter point: those scientists supporting the global warming evidence actually agree upon the natural cycles of the climate changing - where it differs to the tinfoil hat wearers is that they believe with over 95% certainty that human activities have caused global warming. It's not that natural causes have stopped or are being ignored but that human activities have surpassed natural cycles to such an extent that we are in a process of warming, due to greenhouse gas accumulations driven by humans.

There's a NASA graphic here showing the increase of CO2, one of the greenhouse gases, accumulating to the current highly dangerous levels:

https://climate.nasa.gov/interactives/climate-time-machine

(Should be a permitted source, as NASA is a recognised government site).

Of course, people are welcome to think and believe whatever they fancy and this is fine, as long as they're not going to impede the world's experts from influencing steps to mitigate global warming. If you don't believe that there is warming underway due to human activity, then maybe it's because you've been putting your attention into the wrong places, or you just don't care.

The climate is changing, it's heating up and it's largely now caused by human activity.
