Beautiful things

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Today I was driving and I heard a piece of music, an operatic voice, I am not ashamed to admit. It's very beauty sent a course, cold fire up my spine, the "shiver" it enduced was smile inducing, in the modern age this is termed a "rush"..... I gloried in it, and felt, for a time, whole....

I came home, and there are no children there, o laughter of the young, or a wife's comforting smile, but keen to continue this feeling of pure life contentment, I read a book, and discovered a phrase of, for me at least, an equally beautiful moment I literature, which, although you may of course ridicule for me, I will share;

"He stepped down, Trying not to look long at her, as if she were the sun, yet he saw her, like the sun, even without looking"

Now whether you find this beautiful is of little consequence to me, but what do you find beautiful?

Caveat, I know this is a swingers site, but even swingers (Tongue firmly in cheek) must have a definition of beauty beyond the lifestyle we partake in?

Later i took some pics of leaves along the canal, some close up ones,and some cotton type bank .

Not so hot on poetry but the mention of a 'cold fire up the spine' made me instantly think of a piece of music...

If it makes you smile in a way that the world seldom sees, who am I to criticise? That's the beauty of beauty (if you pardon the pun) it is unique to each of us. I will make appoint of finding this piece of music.....

Something about water isn't there? Probably Freudian, but who cares? Give me a river, a summers day, the grass green, and a glass of fine White, and I will join you in your smile...

i went to a seminar once where they were defined as grace moments...those brief moments in the day when we stop and realise the beauty in the simple things around us.

Today my grace moment was the cobwebs strung across the back garden,the sunlight catching the dew drops.

What is this life if full of care

We have no time to stand and stare?

No time to stand beneath the boughs

And stare as long as sheep, or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,

Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,

And watch her feet, how they can dance.

Cant say it better

Well in a way, for me, you did, the thought was better than the Poem. That cobweb laced with dew, the first songs of autumn (for me), thank you for sharing

When we stay in Wales, on the side of a mountain, with no tv, phones, or central heating...it is always the most amazing and liberating time. We spend our time, enjoying our little slice of heaven...and don't let me even start on the stars just imagine being inside a snow-globe, all those small white particles all around your head...sensational

""He stepped down, Trying not to look long at her, as if she were the sun, yet he saw her, like the sun, even without looking""

I liked that, and I'm not such a literary person. Music tends to touch me more... and your thread has reminded me of a song (although many have beauty) that none of you will know, and many may not like, but none the less I will share!

and p.s. thanks as I'm really enjoying this right now!

My beautiful moment of yesterday ....

An old couple, in their 80s, after a medical appointment, were waiting for the ambulance to take them home. I came out of room nearby, arms full of paperwork, rushing onto my next task but they caught my eye and I stopped for a minute to look.

I watched from behind, her in a wheelchair, he standing at the side of her, both holding each others hand. I imagined a lifetime of romantic love that guided them through the decades. I like to see old couples holding hands

"One of the early pioneers in neurocardiology, Dr. J. Andrew Armour, introduced the concept of a functional "heart brain" in 1991. His work revealed that the heart has a complex intrinsic nervous system that is sufficiently sophisticated to qualify as a "little brain" in its own right. The heart's brain is an intricate network of several types of neurons, neurotransmitters, proteins and support cells like those found in the brain proper. Its elaborate circuitry enables it to act independently of the cranial brain – to learn, remember, and even feel and sense. The recent book Neurocardiology, edited by Dr. Armour and Dr. Jeffrey Ardell, provides a comprehensive over_iew of the function of the heart's intrinsic nervous system and the role of central and peripheral autonomic neurons in the regulation of cardiac function."

As I Walked Out One Evening

by W. H. Auden

As I walked out one evening,

Walking down Bristol Street,

The crowds upon the pavement

Were fields of harvest wheat.

And down by the brimming river

I heard a lover sing

Under an arch of the railway:

'Love has no ending.

'I'll love you, dear, I'll love you

Till China and Africa meet,

And the river jumps over the mountain

And the salmon sing in the street,

'I'll love you till the ocean

Is folded and hung up to dry

And the seven stars go squawking

Like geese about the sky.

'The years shall run like rabbits,

For in my arms I hold

The Flower of the Ages,

And the first love of the world.'

But all the clocks in the city

Began to whirr and chime:

'O let not Time deceive you,

You cannot conquer Time.

'In the burrows of the Nightmare

Where Justice naked is,

Time watches from the shadow

And coughs when you would kiss.

'In headaches and in worry

Vaguely life leaks away,

And Time will have his fancy

To-morrow or to-day.

'Into many a green valley

Drifts the appalling snow;

Time breaks the threaded dances

And the diver's brilliant bow.

'O plunge your hands in water,

Plunge them in up to the wrist;

Stare, stare in the basin

And wonder what you've missed.

'The glacier knocks in the cupboard,

The desert sighs in the bed,

And the crack in the tea-cup opens

A lane to the land of the dead.

'Where the beggars raffle the banknotes

And the Giant is enchanting to Jack,

And the Lily-white Boy is a Roarer,

And Jill goes down on her back.

'O look, look in the mirror,

O look in your distress:

Life remains a blessing

Although you cannot bless.

'O stand, stand at the window

As the tears scald and start;

You shall love your crooked neighbour

With your crooked heart.'

It was late, late in the evening,

The lovers they were gone;

The clocks had ceased their chiming,

And the deep river ran on.

The Hill

by Rupert Brooke (1887-1915)

Breathless, we flung us on the windy hill,

Laughed in the sun, and kissed the lovely grass.

You said, "Through glory and ecstasy we pass;

Wind, sun, and earth remain, the birds sing still,

When we are old, are old. . . ." "And when we die

All's over that is ours; and life burns on

Through other lovers, other lips," said I,

---"Heart of my heart, our heaven is now, is won!"

"We are Earth's best, that learnt her lesson here.

Life is our cry. We have kept the faith!" we said;

"We shall go down with unreluctant tread

Rose-crowned into the darkness!" . . . Proud we were,

And laughed, that had such brave true things to say.

---And then you suddenly cried, and turned away.

My favourite poem...gets me everytime..
