Why do Doctors never tell you all the facts?

Due to Diabetes I am loosing my eyesight, I have lost 80% so far, over the last 3 years I have been having surgery to try to slow it down, had my 6 month check yesterday and the sight in my right eye has drastically deteriorated, when the Doctor looked at the back of my eyes he said it was good news it seems that the last surgery stabilized my condition for now but the deterioration I have had in my sight since my last check is because I am now getting cataracts, which has been caused trough the previous surgeries I have had, I was never told that this could have been a side effect, problem is now he wants to perform surgery to remove them and he wanted to book me in asap, so I asked him if there were side effects to this surgery, he came out with the old "well all surgery carries risks" but didn't really seem to want to tell me what could happen, eventually I got it out of him, best scenario they could be removed and my sight stays stable, or they could be removed and the op could trigger off the bleeding at the back of my eyes again which would speed up the deterioration again or they could be removed but because of the Diabetes, I could get an infection in my eyes after the op which could lead to me loosing my eyes completely, I said I could not make the decision just like that, it is something I need to think about, , so he has given me the next 6 months to decide what I want to do and whether I can cope with it, if I had been given all the facts of what the other surgeries could have caused, I might have chosen not to have them, as at the end of the day I am going to be blind anyway, it just would have happened sooner

Thats awful to hear, Doctors these days sit on the fence continuously due to the fear of private prosecutions, Diabetes and especially its side effects are hard to deal with at the best of times. Good luck and hugs XXXXX

Sounds like you are stuck between a rock and a hard place Simone.

Having once been in a situation where I needed to know all the facts I asked the specialist to be brutally honest with me, about all the procedure would entail and what would happen if I refused it.

I saw any surgery as carrying risks but ultimately anything that would give my family their mother for a few years longer swung it for me.

I may have lost bits of me along the way , but I'm ever thankful to still be here with them.

Only you can question your doctors and their reasons for doing what they did for you and what they wish to do further.

I do hope that you get answers and explanations that give you more peace.

Sometimes it feels like you as a patient are there for them to experiment on, but sometimes those experimental surgeries lead to more apt care and prolonged treatments for others if not for you yourself.

I wish you well. xxx

i seen a doctor a few weeks ago and he asked me what i wanted him to do and what i thought was wrong. surely its his job based on symptoms to diagnose something and suggest treatment.

what he did never worked? my knees are still swollen and painful so going to see a different doctor.

If doc tells me there is something wrong with myself or if it is someone close I will listen carefully, ask what I can and then go home and search on the internet.

They have a difficult job, a lot of pressure, they are only human.

I'm diabetic too and have been since mid 90's, and the amount of different medical differences between different doctors and so called experts make my arse laugh! they should take each case as individual not just speculate what they "think" may happen due to limited knowledge they have.

Ask other diabetic people who have the same problems to get clearer answers and experiences, this might or will help to make the situation you are in.

I know what you mean, I have been Diabetic for 25 years, had 5 different doctors in that time and all changed medications and if you go to them with something and they're not quite sure what is wrong with you, they blame it on the Diabetes. So now I tend to look up my symptoms before I go, I have diagnosed myself several times before seeing a Doc, including my retinopathy and macular odema (probably spelt wrong sorry) but just wished I had been told what risks there could have been with the surgeries I have had, I have decided to talk it over with my sons and go from there.

Thanks to everyone who have been supportive and for your kind words xx
