Sex shops and women’s equality
Jump to: Newest in thread
Have just read this interesting article this morning saying how sex shops are going out of business due to the internet but what struck me was the comment by the “Women’s Equality Party” saying “sexual entertainment businesses are built on the basis of exploiting young vulnerable women and councils should consider whether it’s appropriate to grant licences that give men a safe space to act out their power over women”
I personally think that’s a bit naive to think that every sex shop, lap dance club and private members clubs are exploitative and demeaning to women. I know many women who enjoy going to such places and indeed gain a sense of empowerment over drooling, feral men. Call me old fashioned but I always thought equality was about everyone being equal and having the right to enjoy themselves however they choose as long as it’s consensual.
What does everyone else think? Are sex shops dens of inequity? How many women enjoy adult cinemas? Should these “man havens” be closed down?

"There can be no greater equality than women reclaiming their own sexuality.
The equality mob sound like the Taliban to me."
Women don't ever enjoy sex, they only ever do it because men coerce them into it. They should be protected and kept virginal.
Or that's how they seem to think. |

Yup, and all those sex shops which stock 100s of devices for the sole purpose of women enjoying their sexuality without being dependant on a man for satisfaction. Usually carrying a VERY limited range of male wanking paraphernalia. Who cater to, are patronised by, and advertise almost exclusively to women. Those are men REALLY exploiting women... |

Personally I love a good sex shop. I’m not on about Ann summers, I mean the old fashioned sex shops. We had one called cherry pie and the lady who ran it gave me my first vibrator when I wasn’t old enough to actually be in there lol. |

That's because they're also all members of the John Merrick lookalike club. |

I do agree with this point. I think that sex positivity and women taking ownership of their sexuality is definitely a sign of feminism. |

It's difficult isn't it.
Some would say that sexual entertainment is women exerting power over men.
What is needed is acceptance of every person's (legal) sexuality. The opportunity for everyone to be sexual in a way that makes them happy in a society where the majority of people know that abuse and manipulation isn't part of that.
So if a woman or a man wishes to earn their living as a sex worker they're free to do that without being trafficked, exploited or having some limp in the background beating them up and taking their money. |

Women exploit other women. I'm not saying that's the case with Ann Summers but it isn't proof that exploitation doesn't happen. |

Yes it's almost as if some people get their idea of what feminists look like from 1970s carry on films...
I actually agree that many feminists' approach to sex is pretty one sided and I'm nuanced but peddling stupid stereotypes hardly assists the discussion. |

I like post orgasm torture porn. That would be women using men for their enjoyment.
Do people not understand that women enjoy sex too. I bet I've watched more porn and been in more sex shops than my ex husband. |

We use an excellent sex shop with a porn cinema on the premises. Lovely guy runs it, with some female staff. Treat all customers equally and a pleasure to visit. Sad to see articles peddling attitudes like this |

You can read her argument in the article.
I just think it helps to argue about things that people actually think or have said. |

I get a roughly 40-60 female to male ratio in my shop.
A lot more couples and solo ladies come in because..
-they've always wondered what it was like inside
-have a healthy sex life and want some extra bits they can see before they buy
-want to spice up an evening as a surprise

Yeah, the main enemies of young, slim, attractive women these days always seem to be older, fatter, uglier women. |

I think the gender war is a battle being fought on many fronts, not all the combatants identify as feminists or otherwise.
When I was young it was called the battle of the sexes and commonly accepted that everyone was called to arms. |

Stick "Only 7 per cent of Britons consider themselves feminists" into google and have a look at the telegraph article. Oh and 86% of men want equality between the sexes, compared to just 74% of women so there's your patriarchy right there! |

That's quite misleading isn't it. It doesn't say 7% of women, it says 7% of Britons and the survey wasn't 'are you a feminist, yes or no' it was about the connotation of the word feminist. A lot of people find it a negative word these days when people use it as a derogatory word for anyone wanting to see change.
The article also says that The overwhelming majority of the public share feminist values but don’t identify with the label.
The actual figure in the article for women using the term feminist was 9%.....but I won't call you a liar over 2% |

I can't call the gender war off. As with all wars it will only ever properly be over when the warring factions sit down, talk and understand each other.
But therein lies the problem, i don't see men and woman as warring factions with different aims in life. I am man and my two favourite people in the world are women.
Neither do I. Many people do though, I thought we were talking in general rather than personally.
I wouldn't say many. 7% of british people identify as feminists. A vocal minority really.
Where do you get this statistic from? Just out of curiosity
The actual figure in the article for women using the term feminist was 9%.....but I won't call you a liar over 2%
Because the values femimists proclaim and what they actually believe are two very different things.
I know they are pathetic, but there are male feminists too you know.
Never said there wasn't. It was you who misquoted the 7% as being just women .
Why are they pathetic?
Well there's a saying that when a man declares he's a feminist then you can start the countdown on the r@pe allegations..."
Is there? Never heard of it myself but.... OK, if you say so. |
