Video games to be blamed for Florida shooting

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

A couple of news sources from the UK and US are blaming video games for Florida shooting and other acts of violence.

Of course Donald Trump jumped on the band wagon, he said

"I’m hearing more and more people seeing the level of violence in video games is really shaping young people’s thoughts.

"And then you go the further step, and that’s the movies. You see these movies, and they’re so violent a kid is able to see the movie if sex isn’t involved, but killing is involved, and maybe we need to put a rating system for that.

"The fact is that you are having movies come out, that are so violent, with the killing and everything else, that maybe that's another thing we need to discuss."

Do violent video games create violent individuals?

My opinion, do they bollocks!

The games are available all over the world but these shootings predominantly happen in the USA only- availability of weapons is the cause not the symptom

I would say somebody who already has an attraction to violence in them will certainly get more extreme violent thoughts from playing violent video games, I'd also say people who don't have violence in them will also become complacent to violence by playing violent video games.

Maybe a certain level of desensitisation occurs in individuals that are already susceptible to violent or unacceptable behaviour.

But I think the majority of people know the difference between right and wrong, and watching Rambo run through the jungle with his machine gun isn’t going to motivate them to deal with their problems in the same way.

I watched violent movies, listened to violent music, trained in violent arts, owned and trained to use deadly weapons, played violent games and even enjoy violent sports but I've never decided that I'll go shoot up a public place and murder people. That's an absolutely stupid correlation to draw. The news is the true source of violence, always promoting war and demonising one group against the other. Violent right wing extremist terrorists and their ideology is what is luring these people into doing this evil.

The US conservatives will blame movies, gaming, mental illness and anything else they can think of, rather than admit gun ownership laws are at fault.

No they don't, it's a simplistic myth disproven by long-term studies. Video games really took off from the 1980's, they haven't really gotten more or less violent since then but most countries, including America are less violent in 2018 than they were in the 1980's. The most violent countries sell very few computer games (png and drc).

The real question is why anybody would want to play violent video games?.

I bit like why anybody would want to own a gun.

Just because things are available and lawful doesn't mean it's the best thing to do

I play violent video games and watch gory violent movies. I also suffer with mental health issues. But have never felt the urge to carry out a violent act.

Nonsense. I have played many shooters and watched many a horror film. I wouldn't hurt a fly and and squirm when i see fights on a night out. A sound mind can distinguish between reality and entertainment.

I enjoy playing them and you clearly don't. That's absolutely fine. You don't need to know why i do. There is no real question. They are just fun for me and others.

I have enjoyed shooting guns too. At clay pigeons. I don't wish to go shooting pheasants or whatever let alone people.

We're discussing whether video games make people more violent. All the high quality, long term studies prove they do not.

Yep, pretty much this.

There have been some studies showing some correlation between video games and violence but not only was causation lacking, but they weren't good studies in any case (usually without control variables, lacking in sufficient participation numbers, etc.).

But it doesn't really matter. It's too easy to pick up on this stuff and use it as an excuse instead of tackling hard issues like gun control and mental health care.

Anyone up for a game of COD?

I doubt that Trump or anyone in the pro-gun lobby really believes that gaming and movies are to blame. They just want to move the discussion away from gun laws. Nothing new, it's what they always do.

It is called escapism...the same as watching a film or reading a book. I love playing games where I shoot people and blow shit up...because I could never do it in real life, not because I wouldn't get the opportunity but because I am not a violent fruitloop! Even when my mental health is not at it's best, I still would not harm another human being, I have always loved horror books, films and action movies, I hate chick flicks and listen to heavy metal too...has that made me into some crazy loon that thinks she can do wtf she likes and that human life is worth nothing? No...I am still a big softie that loves people and animals and shoots shit in video games instead! We can still learn how to behave properly whether we are introduced to fake violence or not, we can also teach or children how to behave and that action equals consequence too, a few just choose not to!

You are correct.

The exact same games and films are available around the world, yet mass slaughters aren't happening everywhere. So clearly the films and games aren't the problem.

I've seen articles blaming young men, and obviously a lot of people are blaming weapons. Young men and weapons can be found together in many countries around the world, yet we don't see the same levels of slaughter anywhere else.

The only constant in all this; and the only thing that differentiates the USA from other, more peaceful societies that have young men, violent games and films; is the American culture, psyche and mindset, which is clearly fucked.

America needs to stop pointing fingers in any and all directions, and take a good hard look at itself. It is fundanentally fucked.

The American Dream hasn't panned out as expected.

Yes. I don't know if anyone can say there has been a good enough study to be certain one way or the other in fairness. My own experience tells me that you get the odd nutter in online gaming. And there has been the odd movie inspired act of violence down the years. But it is far from common.

I just think there's a good question to ask yourself about why you think that way and why you wish to do it!

It is sad to say, people are more closely related to cars than chimps. A car may not be able to scratch it's own rear end.

But in reality, just like on here, Not everyone fires on all 4 cylinders. No sooner one idiot has been taken out of society, Low and behold, another fucking retard pops up.
