We climbed Helvellyn last June, in very wet and windy conditions. It was challenging (the strong gusts while crossing Striding Edge were ummm interesting!), but we were well equipped and we all made it up and down without incident (apart from my shredded waterproof trousers). It was so exhilarating!
We climbed Great Gable the year before, and we're climbing Scafell Pike this June, I can't wait!

Yes, I did it a few years ago in snow. Striding Edge was icy and scary. I did about 30 feet of it on my back side rather than risk a fall. Some of the people on it were wearing crampons. It was a great walk. |

Not yet, but I definitely want to go Striding Edge! Just not when I have the dog with me. He tried to drag me to my death going from Scafell to Scafell Pike, so don't fancy anything too steep with him. |

Yeah there was about 6ft of snow and white out on the summit. Easy to get lost if you can't read a map. Hard work in the snow and ice..... and there were loads of dogs going up striding edge..I'd love to take a tent up and spend the night up there. When you are out the wind it's so so peacfull |

"Oh right. Iv not planned anything it's just something I'd like to do"
I had my first mountain wild camp last summer and highly recommend it!
If you're going to do it though, invest in lightweight gear... I had to back off pinnacle ridge in Snowdonia, as I was carrying way too much weight and it gets slippery up there when it's wet. |

There's no guarantee of good weather in the Lakes, even in the summer ~ see my reply above, it was June when we went up and the weather was atrocious!
Besides, it's more of a challenge and you get a greater sense of achievement when you've battled the elements (and cheated death).

You're not officially allowed, but it's tolerated in the mountains, as long as you are respectful and clean up after yourself.
You'd be surprised at how many people you see camping up there. |

"Yeah and iam pretty sure hellvelyn via striding edge is the 2nd or 3rd hardest in the UK. "
Really? I thought it was only a grade 1 scramble, but could be wrong.
Saying that Pinnacle ridge is only a grade 1, but a very different animal to the Crib Goch Arete to Snowdon. |

The one and only time I climbed Hellvellyn it was on an amazingly hot and clear day - the views in every direction were breathtaking. It was so warm I spent a large part of the day in a bikini top (obviously not just a bikini top) to get the sun on me. Striding Edge however terrified me ... I don't mind heights if I'm enclosed but that was something else. Don't think I could have done it in wind and rain at all |
