Isn't it about time it was all Halal? It doesn't change the taste, and shopping would be a lot easier for muslims. It seems to work ok for many Nando's restaurants.

What did asians do before we did halal meat? And are they making it cheaper to get more people to buy it then that will become the norm?

Majority of Muslims (that I know anyway ) aren't overly bothered by most places not selling halal meat. When ever me and my friend go to eat she just has seafood and literally makes no fuss about it whatsoever.

Tends to be non Muslims who have stronger opinions about halal meat

No meat should be halal anywhere in the world. Animals should be treated as best as possible in their lives leading up to 'their time'. And the act should be as painless as possible. The method used should not be dictated by anything to do with any religion.

Yes I know I am not being realistic before anyone says. Just my two penneth.

English isn't a religion. English people can be Muslim. So can the Scots , the Irish, the Poles, the Welsh, the Chinese..... yada yada.

It's heavily processed, but a mycoprotein (i.e. a fungus that was originally found in Lancashire I believe), then also eggs, and a whole lot of other stuff that is not exactly what you would call healthy.

If you eat meat, you ARE responsible for the brutal death of an animal. Stunned (if it works, it regularly does not) or not it's a brutal way to go.

Insisting on stunning is mainly a measure ensuring people don't feel too awfully bad for the killing of their dinner because it was heaving a nice voltage induced nap when it was split open from throat to anus.

If you want to ensure the welfare of your meat, kill your own.

Just seems to me if you're not religious, and the animals are slaughtered in a humane way (otherwise it wouldn't be allowed) why should it matter to you if the meat is halal or not. So it might as well all be. Surely it's a very good way of welcoming muslims into our multi cultural society. Maybe a small section of non halal for any remaining Christian's. But even they should be ok so long as they bless their food in Jesus's name.

If it's edible, I'll eat it.

Would we still be able to get pork and seafood though?

I was told by a chef that halal meat doesn't taste as good, because of the way it's killed.

I had authentic halal food recently and it was ok. Not as nice as a typical Indian restaurant though.

Tends to be non Muslims who have stronger opinions about halal meat

This. My very close friend only ever eats halal meat and it's never came up in conversation the whole 17 years that I've known her x

Try giving her non halal meat and see if she mentions it then?

I have done in the past not knowing and she politely declined. It was only when I was speaking to my other neighbour about her not eating my lunch that I found out that she didn't eat Halal meat x

How did she know it wasn't halal? Did you tell her? Otherwise she wouldn't have known. That's what the question was.

Isn’t this just another way in which our western culture is curtailing?

Halal and Kosher are not required for the vast majority of people in the UK, add to this that these methods of slaughter are inhumane and verging on barbaric, the I am completely against it.

What next? Swap baseball caps for hijabs?

"I agree that every animal should be looked after even when its been slaughtered and should be done as humanely possible not slaughtering whilst still alive"

I'm sorry to break it to you but all animals that are slaughtered are alive at the time.Any slaughtering method could be considered cruel and inhumane.

Stunning the animals with an electric shock before slaughter may mean they don't feel the bolt going through their brain but it's still something many people prefer not to think about.

If you really don't wish to be involved in any mistreatment of animals, you'd need to be a 100% strict vegan. Not just in diet but in every aspect of life, much easier said than done.

The practice of killing an animal with a knife and draining is all over the world. Including Catholics in the preseny. I've done it myself when I was a child. We are taught to survive we have to kill animals to eat. I'm certain in England we did the same before commercialisation of meat.

Those who say it's more humane to stun them, you still killed them, ended their life, took them away from their families. How they slaughter animals now is not to make it more humane but to kill in the masses. A cost cutting exercise to increase the profit. Haven't battery Chickens taught us anything?

If the animals were slaughtered in a humane way then there’s no reason why all meat can’t be Halal / Kosher friendly.

However, there are no guarantees regardless of methods used that the animals didn’t suffer at the time of slaughter.

In this day an age no religion of any sort should force its way into other peoples lives.

Those that want to eat Halal have chosen to do so and shouldnt feel put out by having to search for it "plenty of it knocking about".

And more so those that disagree with the practice of Halal should not be forced into it being the only option because the powers that be have decided to pander to a minority.

It's not painless. Even a stunned animal dies horribly. I used to work for a company that rendered fats and proteins from carcasses for sale to the make up industry amongst others. went into a lot of slaughterhouses and the process is still horrible, there is still consciousness in the eyes of the animal, they thrash violently and vocalise pain when dying.

We in the western world aren't animal lovers at all, we just tell ourselves we are and pretend our methods are humane. That's just for us to feel better, not the animal, an ease in our minds, not the animals suffering

As has been said before - most Halal meat is pre-stun. This is according to an abbatoir vet that I know.

I don't think it's actually feasable not to stun in the larger abbotoirs, because you'd have to take animals off the line.

Kosher slaughter can never be pre-stun.

As an aside, there was an interesting doccumentary some years ago which examined slaughter methods and when you look at a cardiograph of a stunned animal, there is a massive "stress" spike as it is stunned (as you might expect), whereas ones that just had their throat slit (the knife is very sharp) didn't show it, the heartbeat just got weaker. Even less visible stress was shown by carbon monoxide slaughter, which I believe is already a reality in some places.

If all meat were Halal you mean? I'm guessing we would be buying meat off the black market, in that case, and it would be very expensive. "

More like where we pay extra for organic or free range at the moment. Would you pay more for your meat to have as comfortable death as possible?

"Isn't it about time it was all Halal? It doesn't change the taste, and shopping would be a lot easier for muslims. It seems to work ok for many Nando's restaurants.

So you are okay with all animal slaughter being inhumane then??

If it was that bad it wouldn't be legal.

What a load of bollocks...have your actually seen videos of halal slaughter? .....troll on my friend ....and hopefully one day you will see the light....even if you do think it shines out of your backside...."

Try not to bite . He's hoping for a reaction!!

"I agree that every animal should be looked after even when its been slaughtered and should be done as humanely possible not slaughtering whilst still alive

Well, you could just kill them yourself. Raise a chicken, kill a chicken. Job done.

Well, that bird still is gonna die. Is wringing its neck or chopping its head off completely cruelty free?

My tip is,if you are going to raise and kill your own animals, don't give them names. It just makes it harder.

The only way to avoid involvement in any form of animal cruelty is to be totally 100% vegan, which I am not,by the way.I doubt there are many even in the vegan community who can really claim to be ,either.

Always amused me taking the occasion bird to the vets and them asking it's name! i only ever named a few hens and my favourite cock. His name was Bastard, because he was!"

You took a chicken to the vets?

"As has been said before - most Halal meat is pre-stun.

Did you see the experiment with the pigs and nitrogen? That was a good one. Trouble is i guess you need that heart to keep pumping to remove the blood from the muscle. So you could never gas slaughter?

As humane as possible? Not as humane as allowing the poor little calf to live, frollicking in fields for the rest of it's life while we eat an apple instead.

The calf wouldn't be born if we didn't want it for food. All breeding stock will be put down.

If I could afford it. I have guilt pangs eating meat already as I don't believe every slaughter house adheres strictly to laws.

I threw away some minced beef a few days ago, and thought how sad that an animal had died, just for me to throw part of it in the bin.

"How many people debating here have actually had anything to do with either method of killing an animal themselves? I will bet next to none, people will be parroting things from the news/paper/facebook that they've heard, recycling arguments rather than having real experience to draw on

Does a couple of rabbits count..?

Cute little guys but hey.. "

I think they do. I firmly believe that if you eat meat, you should be willing to take the life of that which your eating, if your not willing to kill that which you eat, you ought not be eating meat at all. Too many people hide behind the slaughter man.

Like a normal slaughter house, intelligent eyes pleading, pigs screaming sounds incredibly human. Stunning quite often knocks the annual out but regularly doesn't. The meat you eat dies this way..no better than any other way. I've seen this a lot with my own eyes, not videos on line or television, personally.

"Who cares . You can’t be a meat eater and then complain about the way the animal is killed . Different cultures all have different beliefs and ways of doing things , if you prefer halal method buy it but if not don’t . Simples . At the end of the day The animal is killed to feed you regardless of how it got killed . And no I’m not a veggie

You can if you want your Sunday roast to have been killed quickly and painlessly. We have laws about transporting and slaughtering animals because people care how they die. "

I've killed chickens, fish and a sheep. Skinned it too. The reason we bleed the sheep is because we mix it with herbs and let it set. Then we use the insides for a haggis like soup.
