FAB CRAP RUNNERS' CLUB

WEEK SEVEN!!!!

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

Well done Crap Runners!

19 wonderful folk reported progress during Week Six. It seems that we're all really starting to make progress and can see how we've improved from Week One. It seems incredible that, just a few weeks ago, we were exhausted after one minute of running.

We've got another newbie (welcome!).

.

.

.

STOP PRESS...STOP PRESS...STOP PRESS... STOP PRESS... STOP PRESS... STOP PRESS

FAB CRAP RUNNERS' CLUB SOCIAL!!!!!!!

I am beyond excited to announce a Fab Crap Runners' Club social at the end of week nine. After plotting everyone's location on a map (yes, I do need to get a life), and with the help of Twat, I have picked a fairly-central parkrun with a pub/cafe nearby.

Date:

Saturday 3rd March at 9am (meet from 8.30am)

Venue:

Great Denham parkrun http://www.parkrun.org.uk/greatdenham/

Followed by:

Coffee, cake and gossip at about 10am at Brewers' Fayre, Marsh Leys, MK42 7FY

What to do:

Put the date in your diary and register for free with parkrun on the link above. I'll figure out the finer details ASAP.

RSVP:

Please let me know on this thread if you're intending to come along.

But, but, but:

I know - it's bloody terrifying! Running with actual runners at an actual event! But you have options.

(i) I will do the course with the slowest person in our group (and may well be the slowest person come to think of it). If we need to walk the whole thing, that's what we'll do. So no one in our group will be last - the slowest two of us will cross the line together.

(ii) I'll come up with a way of us identifying each other that doesn't "out" us as Fab-folk. I won't carry a giant sign that says "Swingers Assemble Here".

(iii) If you don't want to do the course or you're not ready for it, my other-half will be hobbling around on an ongoing knee-injury at the finishing line and will gladly stand with you and chat away about all sorts of rubbish.

(iv) Or, if you have any sense at all, you'll feign injury and just meet us in the pub afterwards.

Now back the the thread....

.

.

.

EXPLANATION:

If you're unsure what it's all about, the old thread explains (linked to below) but, in short, from 1st January, we're all trying to improve our fitness through "Couch to 5k" (C25K) which is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (I'm using Get Running). A few people are getting fit by other means including walking and cycling - all are welcome.

We're all expecting to be utterly crap at it but we're doing it anyway - yay us!

Old thread: https://m.fabswingers.com/forum/lounge/711745

New members are still very welcome - post on this thread and I'll add you to the list next week.

.

.

.

THE OFFICIAL MEMBERS OF THE FAB CRAP RUNNERS' CLUB:

Adam 1971 Managed 25 minutes of unbroken running and is feeling less breathless climbing stairs. (Fabulous work! That's proper running! V v v good)

AdsandGeeky Done 5.5km and has lost 4lbs this week. (You're right on track for the mystery weight-restricted activity for your stag do! Give our love to Geeky)

Bitch_and_Twat Ran on Sunday and has been teaching us all how to write parkrun correctly. (I'm glad it's going well. It won't be long before we can all sign up for parkrun ("all lowercase, all one word"))

bob1981a Watched a parkrun! (Armchair athletes are very welcome!)

BoPeep1 Week Five Run One done. Managed three runs of five minutes each. (Very good! Have you done more this week?)

Chasing waterfalls Week Five Run Three done! A bit achy but managed the 20 minute run non-stop. (Amazing milestone to pass. Very, very well done!)

Discreet.Mr.Nick Newbie. Was wondering how often to run. Previously built up to a mile. (Welcome! Did you manage to go running?)

HarryJones1975 Does loads of cycling and runs to the butcher's shop to flirt with all the women! (Motivation is important! When you're ready to do a parkrun we'll ask the butcher's shop women to run ahead of you!)

here4fun87 Went out running before work. (How's it all going?)

Little_Brat_Evie!! Sugested the survivors' social takes place at a parkrun. (Great plan!)

Lookingforlust Has been snowed under with work. Next run was Sunday. (How did the run go? Have you found your motivation?)

Mickey and Minnie Week Three Run One done! (Hope your calf is ok. Well done - you're almost a third of the way through).

Micky-disco Was going to buy new trainers. (Did you get some? What colour?)

Miles Away Girl Is repeating Week Four. (You're doing amazingly. When you crack this one we'll all go wild!!!)

MrsTrellis Reckons she's Paula Radcliffe after running 25 minutes without stopping.

northerndels1000 Had an incredibly long week at work but managed Week Five Run One and managed to keep running for an extra two and a half minutes at the end. (Amazing achievement to outrun the app! Hope you get a few days off soon).

signorina Done Week Six Run Two at 7.15 minutes per kilometer. (That seems really fast to me. That'd put you at 5km in 35 minutes which is a really decent time. Well done!)

stevenelden44 Is going to to swim for fitness and rope in a friend. (Great stuff! Let us know when you're planning on going. I know you've been ill this week. Get well soon)

tigercub89 (How's the ankle? Have you been jogging more this week?)

Topsy Rogers Suggested a survivors' social. Was planning 3km without walking or 4km with one walk. Avoided running in the rain. (Hope you got out in the end. We had hail here today)..

I can just imagine the verifications from that social “He stank of sweat, had a blotchy bright red complexion and his speech had the sinister overtones of a heavy breather phone call”

A bit like my normal verifications then

Hello one and all. Update from m my own personal running quest. Managed the week 5 day three run. I had to run week 5 over about 10 days as my flu jab gave me some horrid side effects. Now that’s clear I can safely say I ran about 5.5 km on Saturday. An move onto week 6 now.

Well done everybody. An what a great idea organising a social.

I will let you know about that in due course if I can attend.

Did I miss the Parkrun social?!

I had three days off but I didn’t actually want one. I was going yesterday but the snow, hail, wind and -3 temp put me right off, the cold really doesn’t do much for my lungs but GUESS WHAT!! I just did a 3.9k non stop in 25 mins. My faith in myself has been restored.

I could have done more actually and I think I stopped too soon as I got a bit dizzy when I got in but I’m fucking proud of me.

Is everyone ok? I was thinking of my first run tonight and I know you were all the same, look how far we’ve come.

Don’t worry about the schedule. Several people are doing it at a slower pace.

25 minutes is easy (hard), you’ll be fine (you’ll wish for a twisted ankle), just go for it (go reeeeeeeally sloooooowly as the only way to survive!!!)

So I really ought to jog today. 25 minutes. It’s not that long.

(My shortest ever meet was 24 minutes from the moment the guy texted me to say he was in reception, to the moment he left the room seemingly thinking we’d had fun. I had to watch TV and eat Malteasers to make myself feel better).

24 minutes? You bloody timed it?

Reminds me of the old hockey (rugby/football) song we used to sing on the minibus back from long away trips at University.

“I put my hand upon her toe, ya-hoe ya-hoe. I put my hand upon her toe, ya-hoe ya-hoe. I put my hand upon her toe ya-hoe ya-hoe. Young man she said, you’re far to low. Ya-hoe ya-hoe ya hoe”

And so on up her body...until you reach her twot, where she says Young man you’ve hit the spot “

Blokes, eh...

"

Delightful! That’d get me horny. (Actually it probably would today!)

Yes, the headwind is really tough! When I look at the weather forecast for my run it’s often 10-15mph, I would love to run when it’s calm

Update.........

Had a good run on Sunday, and another this morning. Will be running Thursday morning too. I’ll be really far away by the end of the week............(a church bell rings in the distance as tumble drifts across the plain.....).

Big thank you to sergeant major (mrs) Trellis and two tone for the motivation!!

Question for experienced runners.

I’m running at an easy 8km/hour pace for 3.2km and I’m looking to push on (a little bit!!). Should I be looking at increasing pace or distance or both?

I did a split time for my run last night, the walking pace for me is about 4mph while the run was 5.5mph for 25 minutes.

I’m unlikely to set off the police speed traps but my long legs means a faster pace is easier. The amount of lard on my arse means a fast pace is difficult so it’s swings and roundabouts really

If I were you I’d work on duration rather than speed but I know nothing

There’s 3 things that improvers need to do: increase top speed by doing short intervals (100-400m), increase speed stamina by doing longer intervals (400m-2000m), and increase stamina (longer runs). Whole marathon programmes exist based on 3 quality runs a week with lots of rest in between.

For 5K the first two are most important.

Nope, see my previous post about speed, speed-stamina and stamina. As taken from one of the greatest coaches (not me sadly)...Advanced Marathoning by Pete Pfitzinger...applies to all distances from 5K upwards with some (nipple) tweaks for shorter distances...

Just get yourself to the distance you want to be running, then you’ll have you run route that you go. Keep running that and you will see the times drop. Get Strava, Nike run club or run-keeper. Easy then to track your progress. Pace will increase quite quick once you have found your distance and conditioning

Week 5 run 2.....i messed up a bit!! And nearly did a paula Radcliffe

2x8 mins, the first 8 mins took me right up the steep hill which i managed, slowly but my walking was all downhill meaning my next 8 mins were all uphill, i usually do a double loop but thought my 8 mins would take me less than the second loop so i went to the exit and ran downhill, just before the mega steep hill home i looked at the time left and still 3 mins left so i ran up to a side bit and back hoping this would give me my 3 mins, wish I'd kept running around my usual loop I'll know for next time

You’re not a real runner until you’ve Paula-d in training...and experts Paula in races. I once had four in the middle of a 30K race...it cost me about 2min in total, but it still wasn’t a shit time ( )

I forgot to add, I have T2 diabetes but hold non diabetic numbers with a low carb diet for almost ten years and have become a bit of an expert on it. I lost eight stones and have kept it off with that lifestyle choice and reversed many annoying conditions. I eat less that 20g of carb a day so if anyone wants to ask any questions, I’d be happy to answer them.

Hey folks, newcomer here.

Just had a lunchtime run, about 2.5 miles in the wind rain and sleet. First run in absolutely ages, well probably 4 months, felt like I was bogged down in treacle (which is a nice thought ) and my toes were as numb as my intellect. But calories out is greater than calories in so I'm a happy boy.

Excellent work!

A nice idea to measure the speed in different ways too, is 7 minutes per km faster than 6 mph or 8km per hour?

Or should we just mention the number of runners we overtake? My speed so far : zero

"Update.........

If I were you I’d work on duration rather than speed but I know nothing "

I totally agree, don't even worry about speed until you can comfortably run for an hour without stopping. Once you hit that stage, then your body will be sufficient hardened to be able to cope with the additional stresses of higher intensity runs

Quite right, it's a foot race. Nowhere in the rules does it say you have to run all the way. Good luck, remember don't start too fast, run within yourself for the first 10 miles, then enjoy the feeling of passing a whole host of hares in the final 3 miles

Hey, there will always be a whole bunch of people who are only too happy to step in and criticise you for anything and everything you do, don't swell their numbers by being critical of yourself!

There will always be occasions where you have to take a slight step backwards, it's the nature and unpredictability of life. It really doesn't matter if you didn't hit your target this time, there will always be a next time to give it another go

Just compare that run with how you were at the start of the year, and consider how much progress you've made. You're moving in the right direction, this is the smallest of hiccups, don't let it get to you x

Can I show off a teeny tiny bit?

I ran for 31 minutes!!!

The reason was that I really wanted to reach 3.5 km and I found an incredibly slow pace that felt sustainable. I mean really, really, REALLY slow. Just above walking pace.

But it meant I felt like I could carry on.

So to anyone with doubts, don’t not-try and don’t give up. I’m a fat lass, with no sporting ability whatsoever, picked last in PE, came in last in sports day (in my golden year I came second-to-last) and I never ever thought I’d be able to do this.

So as slow as it was, and as toddler-chasing-a-pug-like I was, I’m bloody proud of myself!

Yeah!!

As I believe I may have hinted at several times before, run slower = run further = feel better

Now you've found your easy pace, you will see the distance you can run start shooting up. You'll recover quicker, stay more motivated, which means you'll be able to run more often, and everything will just start happening

"Can I show off a teeny tiny bit?

You're my hero! Well done Mrs T, I know I couldn't do that yet

Emphasis on yet, you'll absolutely be doing it, and sooner than you think, if you stick with the plan!

Thanks all. You’re all marvellous. I wanted to give up in week three and four. It was only the potential wrath of you lot that kept me going.

Thanks so so much.

Mrs T, you are my inspiration. You’ve dedicated yourself to keeping up with us lot and not once have you moaned.

Well tonight I was huddled up in bed with the blanket on and I’d just talked myself out of running then I saw what you did and I got my shoes on and I ran.

I kept on running because your words kept popping up in my head and d’ya know what? I didn’t stop either. I ran for 32 minutes (according to that temperamental bitch Strava) and covered 4.3k I even managed to feel like I’d fallen into an easy pace at some points.

Thank you

Well done!

Those are good miles, when you didn't really want to do them, but you still got out there and got the job done

Knee support thingys. Are they worth it? I’ve had surgery on my right one that necessitated realigning my kneecap by moving my quad but it was a bit sore tonight.

I’ve seen all sorts of contraptions but do they work?

I'm not convinced they do much, although I'm sure there will be people who swear by them.

I swear I couldn’t have done it two weeks ago. Last’s week’s 25 minute run was absolutely the upper limit of what I could do.

I always winced if I saw runners or other sportspeople wear supports, although I agree some people might “support” their use. Whatever works for you probably.
