That's rapidly becoming Bradley Walsh's get out of jail free card to anyone under 25 ish.. who goes onto The Chase, a general knowledge quiz show, who doesn't seem to have any fecking general knowledge !
Ive seen:
" Mick Jagger is lead singer of which band "?
" erm...The Beatles?"
" The penny-farthing was a type of ?"
" Stamp "
And my favourite was some university lad who, even with multiple choice answers on a question, selected " Robin " as being the twin brother of Romulus..
These are frequent occurrences and good old Brad just brushes them of with the " before your time " excuse..my question is this..
In regards to just day to day shit that you really ought to know..are kids really thick as pigshit and/or scarily oblivious ? |

Both i think. The youtube generation think everything they watch is real life.
My youngest is 16 and currently obsessed with conspiracy theory videos and she comes out with some hilarious statements which she believes to be fact. Did you know that Aliens sank the titanic and the McCanns are lizard people?
Obviously i tell her shes a blithering idiot and to stfu with that nonsense and direct her to my New Junior World Encyclopedias circa 1970s and Arthur C Clarke's Mysterious World - the youtube for my generation! |

"I think they have just been exposed to different materials, so don't study the classics or history in the same way, for example. Technology also fosters people being insular "
Agreed on both fronts. I think maybe they suffer from what they aren't being taught. Im not trying to imply that they are inherently unintelligent, more that there are glaring omissions |

Is not knowing who Mick Jagger or Remus are a bad thing though?
There's plenty of more important information to fill our heads. The only reason I know them is because I enjoy a bit of the Stones and love mythology and comics.
I wouldn't consider anyone lesser for lacking extensive general knowledge.
Also, being able to Google an answer seems to make a lot of folk not retain knowledge as much. Almost like some people train their brains to keep certain information and what they consoder unimportand gets put in the trash bin awaiting emptying on their grey matter desktop. |

Its more that, its a quiz show aimed towards general knowledge ( as in its accepted form ).. so perhaps not entirely deleting the old hard drive isnt always the best idea ( just because it suits bbcs Sherlock doesn't make it a real world gift ) |

She might have a point with the McCanns.

But surely in regard to day to day shit that will vary from generation to generation depending on their general interests... pretty sure some of those young whippersnappers could answer a whole heap more questions about more recent pop culture etc than I could.... there might also be the case of nerves and brain freeze when filming.... but undoubtedly producers will also select contestants that are less likely to win a bucketful of cash... cant have everyone the big dollars eh! |

God no lol, there'd be no cash left to go towards Bradley's hair fund. It might just be, as you suggested, a generational thing, though it does irk me, surely there are certain things that should just be commonly known ? |

Think you've pretty much nailed it there Minxy - ask me anything music related from the 70s/80s/90s and I'll invariably be able to have a good stab at the answer - ask me who's in the charts these days and I wouldn't have much of a clue - likewise with other popular things from today. |

The opinion seems to be then that its fine that the latest generation need only be intellectually aware of articles that have only existed within their own lifetimes ? |

They are a reality tv show family. The deceased father was one of OJ Simpson's lawyers and the step dad is a famous Olympic athlete who has transitioned to a woman.
My daughter used to watch Keeping up with the Kardashians every night while I lived with her. |

Heard first hand from a Researcher in Bordeaux Uni who doubles as an allotment helper for sustainable living..
Young 25Yo couple has a new allotment and plant stuff including carrots. After a number of weeks of care they call the Helper for advice as there nothing to harvest..
Turns out.. they had massive carrots from over care but were waiting to see them pop outside..
One could think she made up the story!.. but 6y ago I was in a supermarket and handed over a corn cob.. the 18Yo at the till asked what it was... and looked really puzzled when I said corn.....
Never mind Mick Jagger; I know little of Aretha franklin, but for some things you have to draw the line IMHO.

The world is definitely changing younger people have different values and goals in life only personal opinion but think it's the internet's fault
We used to talk and discuss issues now it's just Google and bam the answer in seconds so why try to remember anything
Even comes down to simple things like phone numbers as a youngster I could go to a phone box and call any of my mates from memory now just touch name on mobile
It has to change how people's brains work and develop but suppose that's evolution |

To be fair I left school at 16 to join the Army, and nevery came close to studying the classics.
However, I am interested in the world I live in, and have continued to educate myself about it.
Just watching BBC Four regularly is a good start!

This is true lol
Was thinking about starting a new thread about teachers but here is the same
A few years ago my ex's oldest child a girl of 7 was doing really well at maths but was getting bored as was too easy for her
I started teaching here long division and large numbers multiplication
She went to school proud and happy she had learnt this and showed her teacher who told her it's too advanced for her and got her back to doing maths like 8+5= obviously she became bored at school again |
