"I did the first run of week 6, on the app I’m using it’s 5 minutes run, walk, 8 minutes run, walk and finally 5 minutes run again. This is less than the solid 20 minutes running of last week but either I’m going faster (it’s relative; I still got overtaken by a car with a flat tyre being pushed by 2 guys) or the exercise took longer. Whatever the reason I ended up being further around my route than before so the final minute was running uphill There was also a bit of a strong breeze for the rest of the run so it was tough going but I made it. I also ran in daylight so when I trod in the puddles of rainwater and cow pats I could see them shooting up my leg as well as the usual feeling and hearing them. Nice " I saw that....is it easy or hard?

" AdsandGeeky Went for 6.5km walk but his ankle is playing up. (How is it feeling now?) " It was a run with the brothers but they do it a lot more than me so I walked some parts. Ankle feels alright now I just feel a bit stiff Ads

"Treading in the cow pats? It’s quite easy " The run is hard but to be honest it’s no worse than the other runs. I found week 1 hard and so was week 2. The message really is that it’s difficult but achievable and if you don’t make it then do it again 2 days later until you crack it. You’re not in a normal running club here where everyone is wonderfully fit, we can fail at stuff sometimes but then have another go. Determination will see you through rather than muscle and you’ll feel great when you do it

What i was asking was as you'd already ran 20 mins was it easier to go back to the shorter runs

"Not really, but I don’t know if that was because it was windy or there was still a lot of walking. Letting you all into a little secret here but I’m not terribly fit, however when I failed in week 3 or 4 I repeated it and that’s what I’ll keep doing. It is extremely surprising to be running up a hill that you were staggering up a few weeks ago, and rewarding too" You're fitter than you were a few weeks ago

" Quick question for all you crap runners - the gym? Y/N? easier to motivate yourself?" Personally i hate the gym. I find it so boring and i have little enthusiasm to go or do anything if i manage to get there. I find it easier (well not easy but slightly easier) jogging outdoors

The amount of exercise is going up with our fitness so it feels just the same. (Don’t get me wrong - it feels shit - but the happy/buzzy/smug feeling after is pretty cool!)

"I ran last night, it was run 2 of week 6 which is two 10 minute runs with 3 minutes of walking in the middle. I was exhausted at the end but did it. Friday is 25 minutes of running, no breaks I can only explain it as the Milgram experiment where some innocent mug is told to give electric shocks to an unseen person in another room; it's to show that given instructions by someone in authority we will keep doing stuff even if the person receiving the shocks appears to be dead! The voice in my headphones is the person in authority and I'm giving myself more and more horrible shocks by running and no matter what the pain, I keep doing it." Whereas Fab is like Zimbardo et al (1973) where a group of subjects were split into guards and prisoners and left to make their own rules...the guards quickly became cruel and the prisoners tried everything to break the rules...couldn’t possibly comment on where the power lies on Fab... By the way, Milgram was an American who was interested in why ordinary German soldiers had “just obeyed orders” in WW2...some of his research team believed that Germans were different and that Americans wouldn’t act like that...they were so wrong... Here endeth the morning’s Social Psychology lecture... Anyway, isn’t this a running thread? We’ll get closed by the mods if we carry on like this...

"Only managed one run last week, and only one so far this week. Work getting in the way I’m afraid My will is wilting........" I’ve had the same, work, flu, fuggle life etc...in the words of Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush “Don’t Give Up” (first bloody earworm of the day)...doing anything is better than nothing, and think of it as a holding pattern, where you are maintaining connection with your running. You’re not that far away you know!!! This is the week you get back on track. So pick a day and time to run and tell us what you’ve picked. Then we can all nag, bully and threaten you until you run, after which we’ll flirt and call you “big boy”.

I was only doing about a mile round trip...i really should start going again to help shift this extra weight." Welcome. You’re really welcome here. A few of us have downloaded “couch to 5k” running programmes which builds up over nine weeks to 30 minutes of unbroken running. I’m using one called Get Running. Tell us on here when you’re planning to run and then how it went and we’ll all congratulate you. Feel free to cheer on the others too. We’re all people for whom exercise doesn’t come naturally!
